- Chapter 45 - The Mute Ghost of Grievance
Now that the words had been spoken, Ruan Tang suddenly understood.
The person before her wanted to confirm whether she truly connected with her soul through this physical form.
“I…”
Ruan Tang opened her mouth, but it felt as if a wad of cotton was lodged in her throat.
Shyness surged uncontrollably within her. As she watched the bright light in Ni Yunshi’s eyes gradually dim, she grew anxious, yet she still couldn’t utter the two words she needed to say.
Undeterred, Ni Yunshi asked again, “Ruan Tang, can’t you say it?”
“No, it’s just… I…”
Ruan Tang strained, clenching her fists to force the words out, but no sound escaped her throat.
Could I really be this concerned about saving face?
Frustrated and anxious, Ruan Tang reached out and wrapped her arms around Ni Yunshi’s neck, pressing her lips against hers once more.
The kiss was urgent and passionate, a clear declaration of the love and affection burning within her heart. Yet, as their faces drew closer, Ruan Tang noticed Ni Yunshi’s eyes growing increasingly cold.
So that’s how it is…
For the first time, Ni Yunshi’s inner voice was as calm as still water.
Panic surged through Ruan Tang. She kissed harder, pouring all her energy into the kiss.
But Ni Yunshi simply pushed her away gently, stood up, and broke free from the embrace.
“I’m a little tired. I want to sleep now.”
Afterward, Ni Yunshi pulled the blanket over herself, turned over, and fell asleep.
“Shishi…”
“Good night.”
Ruan Tang’s urgent explanation was cut off by her calm voice.
Ruan Tang’s hand, which had been resting on Ni Yunshi’s shoulder, recoiled as if shocked. Her heart felt like it had been struck with a whip, and her anger intensified.
So that’s how it is, my ass!
What the hell kind of tragic little drama has she conjured up in her mind?!
I’ve already taken the initiative to come here. Why can’t she think of something positive for once?!
Yet beneath her resentment lay a deeper sense of guilt and self-reproach.
After all the effort I put into finding her and finally resolving to confess my feelings and explain everything clearly, why did I freeze up at the crucial moment?
Lost in her thoughts, time slipped away unnoticed.
By the time Ruan Tang fully regained her composure, the sky outside the window was pitch black, and the person beside her was already wrapped in the blanket, snoring softly.
It seems those three days of wandering really exhausted her.
Ruan Tang leaned down, whispering into her ear, “I… I love you…”
The words, barely audible even to herself, were exhaled in a low breath, the warmth of her breath stirring a few strands of hair.
Ruan Tang held her breath, feeling as if she were clinging to a sheet of thin ice.
Beneath the ice lay scorching magma; falling in would mean being swallowed whole, leaving no trace behind.
Yet after waiting for about half a minute, the soft snores continued uninterrupted, and the person under the covers remained motionless.
Ruan Tang exhaled in relief, but a pang of disappointment also stirred within her.
She couldn’t tell if it was because she hadn’t woken Ni Yunshi or if she still blamed herself for speaking too late.
As the night deepened, Ruan Tang changed into her pajamas and went to wash up.
In the bathroom, she gazed at the massive cloud-shaped mirror, her reflection staring back. Her delicate, slightly rounded features were etched with stubbornness and a fierce determination.
Remembering Ni Yunshi’s stunning beauty, Ruan Tang felt like a childish, ill-behaved girl standing beside her.
“I… I love you.”
“I don’t know who you are, but I truly love you.”
“I love you…”
She whispered the words repeatedly, practicing in front of the mirror.
If I can overcome my shame and completely resolve the misunderstanding between us, I can finally escape this awkward state.
Tomorrow. First thing tomorrow morning! I’ll tell her everything!
Lost in her practice, Ruan Tang suddenly heard a soft click. The door creaked open, and Ni Yunshi stumbled in, her eyes still half-closed with sleep.
“Ah! What are you doing?!” Ruan Tang shrieked, nearly jumping out of her skin.
Ni Yunshi startled awake, her drowsiness vanishing instantly. She blinked and saw Ruan Tang gritting her teeth, clutching her toothbrush and cup, her face flushed crimson.
“I’m going to the bathroom. What are you doing?” Ni Yunshi asked sincerely, her gaze darting back and forth between Ruan Tang and the objects in her hands.
Hiding in the bathroom at this hour? Either she’s casting a curse or…
Hiss, is she comparing which feels better…?
“Ni Yunshi!” Ruan Tang snapped, her patience finally snapping.
The sudden shout startled Ni Yunshi again. Before she could react, Ruan Tang had dropped her toothbrush and comb and lunged at her.
Hiss—
A sharp pain shot through Ni Yunshi’s shoulder, and she gasped.
Ruan Tang had bitten her shoulder without mercy.
Damn it! Why can’t she hear my thoughts? If only she were a tapeworm in my stomach!
“Ruan Tang! What the hell is wrong with you?!”
Ni Yunshi finally lost her temper and shoved Ruan Tang off her.
The force was too great for Ruan Tang to withstand. She stumbled backward, her lower back slamming against the marble edge of the sink.
“Ugh!” Ruan Tang groaned, her legs buckling as she crumpled to the floor.
“Are you okay? You…”
Slap!
Ni Yunshi swiftly reached out to help, but Ruan Tang slapped her hand away and pushed herself up, using the mirror cabinet for support.
“I don’t need you!” Ruan Tang snapped, her eyes bloodshot as she glared fiercely before turning and storming out of the bathroom.
Ni Yunshi stood there, bewildered, like a bullfrog about to be tossed into a pot.
Is she having a mental breakdown or possessed by a ghost?
Bitten while going to the bathroom? Did I interrupt her meal?
Damn! She’s bleeding!
Ruan Tang heard every muttered curse.
As the bathroom door slammed shut with a bang, Ruan Tang instinctively flinched, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably.
She curled up under the covers, pulling the blanket over her head and burying her face in the soft, fluffy cotton. The plush fabric and warm padding absorbed the excess moisture spilling from her eyes.
The bathroom door creaked open again, and Ruan Tang secretly gripped the blanket tighter.
She felt the blanket being lifted on the other side, the mattress dipping beside her, followed by a gentle hand pressing against her back.
Tear tracks still fresh on her face, Ruan Tang dared not move, feigning sleep.
Receiving no response, the person behind her reached around and tugged up the hem of her nightgown.
The scent of medicinal ointment drifted through the gap, reaching Ruan Tang’s nose as a warm, gentle touch began to soothe her lower back.
Ni Yunshi gently applied ointment to the bruise on Ruan Tang’s lower back before turning over and falling back asleep.
Under the covers, Ruan Tang felt suffocated by the stifling heat, but she gritted her teeth and endured it.
Only when she heard Ni Yunshi’s even breathing behind her did she cautiously peek out from under the blanket, quietly get up, and examine Ni Yunshi’s shoulder.
As expected, the once-smooth skin was now dotted with tiny red marks—small wounds covered with thin bl00d scabs.
Ruan Tang wanted to reach out, but Ni Yunshi’s brow was furrowed, her eyelashes fluttering as if she were sleeping restlessly.
Afraid of waking her, Ruan Tang suppressed her impulsive urge and lay back down, inching closer to Ni Yunshi’s back.
Tomorrow… tomorrow morning when I wake up, she vowed silently, I’ll tell her I love her with my own voice!
With this resolution firmly in mind, drowsiness washed over her, and she drifted off to sleep.
The night was silent, each person harboring their own thoughts.
The next morning, Ruan Tang’s eyes snapped open the moment her alarm went off.
The decision she had made in the middle of the night remained vividly etched in her mind. She immediately reached out to nudge Ni Yunshi beside her, only to find the bed empty.
