The Crazy Fox Demon Devours My Heart - Chapter 33
Qingyu stared at the fox lying on the ground, unable to pull herself together. Long-buried memories resurfaced in her mind.
How could this be? How could it be you?
Mo Mo.
Although the fox on the ground had eight tails and looked slightly different from Mo Mo when he was a child, Qingyu recognized him instantly.
It was those eyes—they were identical, exactly like Mo Mo’s.
Qingyu crouched down, running her hand over his smooth fur, and whispered, “How did you become a fox?”
The dagger was still lodged in his chest, and his breath grew increasingly faint.
A pang of panic flashed through Qingyu’s heart. She quickly scooped him up and left the secret chamber, just in time to run into Cangya.
Cangya’s eyes widened in shock at the fox Qingyu was holding. “Young Master!”
Together, they brought Hu Yan, who had reverted to his human form, back to the lakeside courtyard.
Cangya continuously infused him with demonic energy at the bedside. Gradually, Hu Yan recovered his human shape, but his complexion was ghastly, like that of a corpse.
Qingyu sat by the bed and softly called, “Mo Mo.”
His tightly shut eyes trembled and slowly opened.
Cangya, seeing that he was awake, rushed to fetch the doctor.
“Do not go.” Hu Yan’s voice was weak, barely audible.
“But your injuries!” Cangya frowned, staring at the dagger still embedded in Hu Yan’s chest. How could he not see a doctor with such a severe wound?
“Remove the dagger for me.”
“I… I can’t, Young Master!”
Qingyu’s expression was grave. “Shall we let the doctor handle it instead?”
But Hu Yan insisted.
Fu Yin brought a basin of water, along with clean gauze and medicine, and lowered her head, not daring to look.
Hu Yan clenched a lock of black hair between his teeth. His pale, firm chest was exposed. Cangya shakily reached toward the dagger’s hilt.
His hands trembled violently, fearful that a single misstep might cost the Young Master his life.
Qingyu looked at Cangya’s quivering hands and realized he couldn’t do it—those closest to him could never bear to act.
“I’ll do it.”
Hearing this, Cangya immediately withdrew his hand, exhaling in relief.
Qingyu gripped the dagger firmly and glanced at Hu Yan. Sweat beaded on his pale face; seeing her look at him, he blinked slowly, signaling her to act. Qingyu took a deep breath and, without hesitation, pulled out the dagger.
The moment the dagger came out, Hu Yan extended a finger to the wound, using his demonic energy to stem the bleeding. Cangya quickly applied the medicine and bandaged him.
Everything went perfectly. Once the wound was bandaged, Hu Yan’s chest rose and fell steadily. The black hair he had bitten fell loosely across his face.
Qingyu reached out, brushing the disheveled hair to one side, dipped a cloth in water, wrung it out, and wiped away the sweat on his face and the bl00d on his chest. Throughout, Hu Yan’s gaze followed her every move.
After cleaning him thoroughly, the water had turned a faint red. Fu Yin stepped forward to take the basin.
Qingyu quietly looked at the person on the bed and called out again, “Mo Mo.”
Cangya was utterly confused. Who was Mo Mo?
Hu Yan paused, his previously dull eyes lighting up. He forced himself to sit up slightly. “Qingyu… you finally recognized me.”
Qingyu pressed him down, signaling him to stay still. “I should have recognized you long ago.”
After Mo Mo disappeared, she had searched the entire palace and found no trace, believing he was dead. She never expected him to still be alive—and as the Young Master of the fox clan, no less.
But why had he tried to extract her heart? There were too many questions. Now that he was here, she didn’t know where to begin.
Hu Yan tugged at her clothes. Qingyu turned to look at him.
“In the secret chamber, I never intended to harm you.”
Qingyu’s eyes flickered. “Then why?”
“Because a tail of mine resides within you, containing my demonic energy. It could preserve your life, but a human body cannot bear a fox tail without damage. So I had to refine it, integrating my power fully into your bl00d, ensuring your safety.”
Qingyu froze, clutching her chest to feel her heartbeat. There was a fox tail inside her?
She remembered being thrown into the cold palace’s waters after being beaten. She had barely survived, and when she awoke, all the pain was gone. She thought she had been lucky—but it had been Mo Mo severing a tail to save her life. That was when Mo Mo disappeared.
Looking at Hu Yan, he now had only eight tails. So his illness had been caused by severing one tail? Since a tail resided within her, every time she was near him, his illness would ease.
Her chaotic thoughts gradually cleared. No wonder the Elder Lady had forced him to extract her heart. Ye Die’er had said only her heart could be used—but instead of taking her heart, he sacrificed a tail of his own.
Cangya, silently watching, pieced together the story and finally understood why the Young Master had insisted on collecting herbs that time. “Young Master, so when you gathered those herbs and added them to the Princess’s usual medicine, it was to strengthen her constitution—to prepare her for refining your tail?”
Hu Yan nodded. “Refining a fox tail is extremely dangerous. Your body was too weak, so I first nourished you with the herbs, intending to refine the tail only once you were fully strengthened. I didn’t expect the Elder Lady to interfere.”
Cangya was amazed at the Young Master’s foresight. He had planned for the Princess from the very beginning—but it had cost him dearly. He would rather lose a tail forever than take her heart.
Qingyu recalled Fu Yin mentioning that Hu Yan had added herbs to her regular medicine. Indeed, she had felt healthier after taking it.
Qingyu looked at Hu Yan, her expression softening. He had done so much for her—what a fool. Even with their shared history, such a sacrifice wasn’t necessary. If it were her, she could never have done the same.
“Can the tail still be removed?” she asked.
Hu Yan answered honestly, “Once refined, a fox tail cannot be removed.”
So the Elder Lady would no longer scheme to kill him.
Qingyu still felt uneasy. “What about your illness? You suffer so much during flare-ups. In the future, won’t you endure this pain every month?”
Hu Yan held her hand and smiled faintly. “As long as you stay by my side, I won’t suffer so much.” His voice paused briefly, eyes almost crescent-shaped. “If we could be together often… the illness would never flare again.”
Qingyu froze, her face burning with embarrassment. She glimpsed a figure nearby and blushed even deeper.
How could he speak so openly about such a thing!
Hu Yan watched her flushed ears and felt a warm happiness swell in his heart. Finally, his Qingyu could always stay by his side.
