The Eunuch Has A Wife - Chapter 15
Wei Ziwan curled her lips, the corners of her eyes brimming with barely contained amusement: “Husband, did you know that the sunflowers you speak of are commonly found under the eaves and in the corners of ordinary homes? They’re not some rare flower.”
“How could that be? The old consort said they were precious…” As she spoke, she suddenly recalled the old consort’s expression when she mentioned them—nostalgic and wistful. It wasn’t so much that the flowers were precious, but rather what they represented to her: a longing for her homeland.
Bai Zhi’s eyes dimmed slightly.
No, she couldn’t let this troublemaker see her laugh.
So, she forced a calm expression and said, “Then what do you suggest we do?”
This troublemaker seemed to have it all figured out. Did she already have a plan?
“You’re the head of the household and control all the finances. Such an important matter should naturally be decided by you.” Wei Ziwan raised an eyebrow, her words laced with implication.
She wanted to hold onto the money but not do the work? What a nice thought. Today, she would see who really ran this household. Pah, they weren’t even a real family.
Wei Ziwan watched Bai Zhi with a leisurely gaze.
Bai Zhi touched the money pouch in her bosom. It had just been filled with two hundred coins, still warm from being freshly acquired.
This troublemaker must be doing this on purpose.
But if you want the ox to plow, you have to let it graze. So, giving a little money as a token gesture was acceptable.
After a moment of hesitation, she counted out ten coins and said, “Here are ten coins. You can also offer some suggestions about farming.”
Wei Ziwan shook her head, picked up her teacup, and sighed, “Ah, I’m a bit thirsty. The tea in this villa is really good.”
Damn eunuch, stingy and miserly. Ten coins? Who did she think she was fooling?
Bai Zhi took a deep breath and counted out another ten coins, placing them on the table.
Wei Ziwan remained unmoved, continuing to sip her tea.
Bai Zhi clutched her money pouch, her face showing visible pain: “How much do you want?”
Wei Ziwan finally smiled sweetly, “It’s simple. Give me my hundred coins, and from now on, we’ll manage our own finances.”
Bai Zhi was silent for a moment, then reluctantly divided the coins into two equal piles of a hundred each.
Seeing this, Wei Ziwan’s smile deepened. She pocketed her share and said, “People must keep their word. From now on, whether it’s risk or profit, we’ll split it fifty-fifty, alright?”
Bai Zhi forced a smile, though her heart was seething. She said nonchalantly, “Fine, let’s do it that way. Now, can you tell me what we should do?”
Wei Ziwan curled her lips, “The first step—”
“What’s the first step?” Bai Zhi stared at her with eager curiosity.
Wei Ziwan brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, “The first step is, of course, to go see where our four acres of land are.”
Bai Zhi: “…” I ******* want to fight this troublemaker.
She glared at Wei Ziwan, her eyes radiating danger.
Wei Ziwan chuckled softly and leaned in, “Husband, why is your face red? Could it be that you’re thinking about that black-covered manual of yours, and that’s why you’re blushing?”
Bai Zhi’s mouth twitched, and a faint blush spread across her pale cheeks. She wasn’t blushing out of embarrassment—she was furious.
She would sooner or later fight this troublemaker to the death.
“Yes, your husband is thinking about how to pamper you tonight and give you a proper wedding night.”
Wei Ziwan raised an eyebrow and smiled, “Oh, I’d be delighted.” Shameless eunuch, back when you were half a man, I wasn’t afraid of you. Now that we’re both women, let’s see how you plan to pamper me.
“Shameless.” Bai Zhi spat.
This shameless troublemaker, sooner or later… sooner or later… she would fight her to the death.
Wei Ziwan hugged her arms and laughed softly, “I’m not as shameless as you, husband. After all, you still have that manual to practice.”
Bai Zhi: “…” I’ll burn that damn black book later. This annoying troublemaker, we must be destined to clash.
“Let’s go.”
Wei Ziwan, seeing the furious look on her face, instinctively asked, “Where to?”
“To see where our four acres of land are.” Bai Zhi gritted her teeth, enunciating each word.
The two went out, found the steward, and were led out of the villa by a middle-aged woman.
The woman, in her forties, was a widow. Because her son worked as a coachman in the villa, she had also come to work there as a long-term laborer. Everyone called her Aunt Chen.
Aunt Chen was a woman of few words. According to the steward, she would be responsible for Bai Zhi and Wei Ziwan’s daily needs from now on.
The three of them walked westward, and after half an hour, just as Bai Zhi was about to ask how much longer it would take, Aunt Chen stopped: “Young ladies, we’re here. These four acres of unplanted land are yours.”
Bai Zhi looked around. Among the fields, some were neatly plowed, as if they had just been sown, while others already had small saplings planted.
Only their four acres were overgrown with wild grass, as if waiting for them to come and clear it.
Bai Zhi stepped forward. The four acres were vast, and at a glance, she could tell it would take a lot of work. She nudged the weeds with her foot and felt a wave of reluctance.
She couldn’t help but ask, “Aunt Chen, are you sure this is ours?”
Aunt Chen bowed her head and replied, “No mistake. The master himself ordered that these be left for the two of you to tend.”
Seeing Bai Zhi’s disbelief, she added, “The weeds in the field need to be cleared in time. Otherwise, once the seeds fall, the crops will have to be weeded frequently. And the planting season is almost over. If we miss it, we’ll have to wait until next spring to plant.”
Bai Zhi’s gaze fell on the four acres of wasteland. The master himself ordered it?
Her uncle, whom she hadn’t even met yet? Was he deliberately making things difficult for them?
She looked at Wei Ziwan.
Wei Ziwan gave her a deep look, “It seems our uncle holds you in high regard, husband.” Was this a test or a deliberate hardship?
Bai Zhi’s expression steadied, “It seems the second step is to clear the weeds.”
Such a large field, could they really do it? If they missed the planting season, wouldn’t that mean they’d have no harvest until next spring, or even longer?
Wei Ziwan, seeing Bai Zhi’s dazed expression, smiled brightly, “Husband is right, the second step is indeed weeding.” So many weeds… What kind of decision had she made? Was she really here to suffer?
“Yes, we need to clear the weeds.” Bai Zhi murmured absentmindedly, her eyes filled with the sight of wild grass, giving her an unreal feeling.
In the end, they had come full of hope, but left in a daze.
The next day, as soon as the sky lightened, Aunt Chen knocked on their door, saying it was time to clear the weeds.
Aunt Chen took one look at their attire—this was no outfit for labor—and kindly said, “Young ladies, it would be better to change into more suitable clothes.”
Bai Zhi was still in her snow-blue robe; she loved the color.
Wei Ziwan was in her moon-white dress; she loved the color.
But their outfits were clearly not suited for farm work.
In the end, both changed into gray work clothes. Afterward, they glanced at each other, each with a look of disdain.
Standing once more before the weed-filled field, Bai Zhi still felt a sense of unreality. She glanced at Wei Ziwan, who hadn’t moved, then gritted her teeth and bent down, pulling up the weeds one by one.
Wei Ziwan paused, then followed Bai Zhi’s lead and bent down. If this damn eunuch could do it, there was no reason she couldn’t.
