The Eunuch Has A Wife - Chapter 23
“Dear husband, why don’t you explain it to me? Maybe then I’ll understand.” Wei Ziwan said with a gentle smile, her voice soft and soothing.
Bai Zhi glanced at her, pursed her lips, and muttered, “Even if I explain, you won’t understand.”
How could this troublemaker possibly understand how nervous she had been just moments ago?
Wei Ziwan: “…” This eunuch was as annoying as ever.
Meanwhile, Bai Li, having recovered from his initial confusion, summoned Manager Lu. “Go and bring those two here. We need to clear things up today.”
Otherwise, he would have been scolded for nothing and drenched with tea for no reason.
Manager Lu hesitated, then awkwardly advised, “Young Master, it’s already late. It wouldn’t be appropriate to summon the two young ladies now. Whatever it is, it can wait until tomorrow. They won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.”
“How dare they!” Bai Li’s expression darkened. Something must have happened in the past half-day that he wasn’t aware of.
Fuming, Bai Li picked up a teacup, only to remember how he had been drenched with tea earlier. Frustrated, he set the cup down.
No, this was too infuriating.
In the next moment, he swept all the teacups off the table, feeling slightly better afterward. Tomorrow, he would definitely get to the bottom of this with those two.
Manager Lu stood silently by, thinking to himself that these masters really had no regard for money. Why waste perfectly good teacups?
The next morning, before Bai Zhi and Wei Ziwan could finish their breakfast, a servant came to inform them that the young master requested their presence in the main hall after the meal.
As for what they would discuss, it was naturally about the inexplicable tea-drenching incident from the previous night.
Bai Zhi set down her chopsticks, immediately on guard. Was the mastermind behind all this really their elder brother?
Wei Ziwan shook her head slowly, signaling her to stay calm. “Let’s wait a little longer. Eat in peace.”
They needed to give the person hiding in the shadows some time. Surely, after last night’s commotion, the news had already spread.
Bai Zhi steadied herself, picked up her chopsticks again, and began eating slowly. At this moment, she had only one thought: The troublemaker is right. Eat in peace. Don’t panic.
The two of them tacitly slowed their eating pace even further. The servant waiting nearby, seeing their leisurely demeanor, resisted the urge to hurry them and silently sympathized with his impatient young master.
By the time half an hour had passed, Bai Li had nearly finished an entire pot of tea in the main hall before Bai Zhi and Wei Ziwan finally arrived.
However, before he could even ask any questions, Bai Luo followed closely behind.
Why was Second Sister here? Had she heard about last night’s incident and come to mediate? Bai Li wondered uncertainly.
“Greetings, Elder Brother. Ah, both sisters are here too. Perfect, I have something to remind you all about.” Bai Luo said, her long eyebrows slightly raised as if surprised.
Hearing this, Bai Li held back from speaking immediately, waiting for Bai Luo to finish.
Bai Zhi and Wei Ziwan nodded in greeting, both appearing attentive.
“I heard that you two are planning to plant radishes. It’s almost late autumn, so if you don’t hurry, you’ll miss the planting season.” Bai Luo said with apparent concern, her tone filled with worry.
“Thank you for the reminder, Second Sister. We’ll be planting soon.” Bai Zhi replied, thinking to herself that Second Sister was truly kind, unlike Elder Brother, who seemed to make things difficult for them at every turn.
Bai Luo smiled. “I’m glad you’re paying attention. If you really can’t sell the soybeans, I have some spare money I can lend you to buy seeds. I also heard about last night’s incident. Whatever Elder Brother did, he must have had his reasons. We’re family, after all. Let’s not let such a small matter create a rift.”
Bai Zhi suddenly felt there was something subtle about these words. Before she could think too deeply about it, Wei Ziwan coughed lightly, drawing everyone’s attention.
Wei Ziwan smiled at the three of them.
“Second Sister, how do you know Elder Brother had his reasons? Maybe he just doesn’t want to see us succeed.”
Thud! Bai Li slammed his teacup on the table, his anger rising again.
He didn’t want to see them succeed? Did he have nothing better to do? “What are you talking about? Explain yourself!”
Wei Ziwan ignored him and instead looked directly at Bai Luo. “I asked Second Sister first. Why don’t you tell us what reasons Elder Brother might have for picking all the osmanthus flowers in the manor at this particular time?”
It seemed her intuition wasn’t wrong. This Second Sister Bai was most likely the one stirring up trouble behind the scenes.
Bai Luo’s eyes flickered, and she chided gently, “Sister Ziwan, don’t say such things. Elder Brother must have his reasons for what he does. As younger sisters, we should try to understand.”
Wei Ziwan pressed further, “How does Second Sister know what those reasons are?”
“What do you mean, how do I know?” Bai Luo was caught off guard. What was this woman getting at?
Wei Ziwan smiled at Bai Luo and said slowly, “How does Second Sister know about the osmanthus flowers? It seems Elder Brother hasn’t even understood what I’m talking about, yet Second Sister already knows everything.”
She then glanced at Bai Li.
Bai Li, of course, was completely baffled, his eyes filled with confusion. What had he done? What osmanthus flowers?
Seeing this, Bai Luo’s expression stiffened. This vixen had set a trap for her, and she had walked right into it. How troublesome.
She narrowed her eyes and played dumb. “Sister Ziwan, what do you mean? I was just following your lead. I don’t understand what you’re saying.”
Wei Ziwan’s smile deepened. “So Second Sister knows nothing? I thought you knew we needed the osmanthus flowers. But it doesn’t matter now—we don’t need them anymore.”
She was really good at playing dumb, but it was too late. The cracks were already showing.
Bai Luo inwardly gritted her teeth, but she could only keep smiling. “You don’t need the osmanthus flowers anymore? Have you figured out how to sell the soybeans?”
Wei Ziwan feigned surprise. “Second Sister, didn’t you say you knew nothing? How come you understand what I’m saying now? I never said the osmanthus flowers had anything to do with selling the soybeans.”
Come on, keep pretending. Let’s see how long you can keep this up.
Bai Luo’s expression stiffened again, her smile becoming forced. “I just made a guess based on what you said earlier. Did I guess correctly?”
Wei Ziwan beamed. “Yes, Second Sister guessed perfectly. But we’ve already reached an agreement with Manager Xi from Lou Shang Lou. He’s agreed to buy our soybeans at double the price, so we don’t need the osmanthus flowers anymore.”
The rats hiding in the shadows fear the light the most. Since you can’t stand the light, I’ll drag you out into it.
“Manager Xi from Lou Shang Lou? At double the price?” Bai Luo’s first reaction was disbelief. Had that manager lost his mind?
But seeing Wei Ziwan’s confident demeanor, she began to wonder. This vixen wouldn’t make such a bold claim without reason. Could it be true?
But how?
Bai Luo instinctively glanced at Wei Ziwan’s face. What else could this troublemaker rely on but her looks?
Thinking this, her heart raced, and she suppressed her excitement. “Congratulations, then. It’s quite an achievement to get Lou Shang Lou to pay double the price.” Once everyone finds out it was through selling her looks, let’s see where they’ll hide their faces.
Wei Ziwan’s smile didn’t waver. “Of course. Everything depends on one’s own abilities. Don’t you agree, Second Sister?”
“Sister Ziwan, you truly are remarkable. Since you’ve already won Lou Shang Lou’s favor, I won’t worry about you anymore.” Bai Luo’s mind raced as she bowed slightly to Bai Li and left.
Bai Li was still confused but nodded absentmindedly.
Bai Zhi was equally baffled, feeling as though the two had just had a silent battle, yet nothing seemed to have happened.
Wei Ziwan turned to the two bewildered individuals and said gently, “Since everything has been cleared up, we won’t disturb Elder Brother any longer. The people from Lou Shang Lou should be arriving soon.”
“Ah, right.” Bai Zhi replied instinctively, standing up to follow Wei Ziwan out.
Bai Li nodded blankly. After they left, he shook his head vigorously.
Everything had been cleared up? What exactly had just happened? He felt even more confused than before.
“Go and find out what’s going on with the osmanthus flowers in the manor.”
Unable to make sense of the situation, Bai Li felt even more frustrated than the day before.
After instructing his servant to investigate, he still only had a vague understanding. He decided to go to the rear courtyard and discuss the matter with his father.
In the rear courtyard, after listening to his son’s account, Bai Shu’s expression darkened. “The children have grown up, and their minds have grown more complicated. My son, there’s no need to concern yourself with their squabbles. Focus on managing the manor.”
Bai Li bowed his head in acknowledgment. Though he still didn’t fully understand, he knew it was best to follow his father’s advice. For now, he would set these matters aside and focus on his own duties.
