The Eunuch Has A Wife - Chapter 34
Warm breath brushed against her ear, causing Bai Zhi’s heart to skip a beat. She quickly sidestepped, putting some distance between them.
This troublesome person! Always messing with her thoughts.
Wei Ziwan was momentarily stunned, her gaze lingering on Bai Zhi’s face.
The autumn sun was neither too harsh nor too mild, bringing a touch of warmth to the cool breeze.
Dressed in a snow-blue robe, as usual, gave off the impression of a handsome young man due to her male disguise. At first glance, one would instinctively think of her as a peerlessly elegant youth.
However, at this moment, the young man’s ears were tinged with red, and his eyes sparkled like clear water. Half of his usual elegance was replaced by a subtle charm. If one ignored the disguise, he looked like a bashful and flustered beauty.
That bold thought crept back into Wei Ziwan’s mind. Though her eyes remained on Bai Zhi’s face, her thoughts had already wandered elsewhere.
“Hey, I’m talking to you! What are you daydreaming about?” Bai Zhi stepped forward, waving her hand in front of Wei Ziwan’s eyes. This person’s gaze was so strange.
It was as if she was grappling with some perplexing problem, complex and bewildered. Perhaps she was worried about the radishes in the field.
Wei Ziwan collected her thoughts and looked at the person before her, a hint of softness flickering in her eyes that even she wasn’t fully aware of.
“I was thinking about what to do with the radishes in the field. Let’s go ask more people for advice.”
Bai Zhi raised an eyebrow triumphantly. She had guessed right; this troublesome person was indeed worried about their radishes. “Let’s go. We can’t delay this matter.”
Wei Ziwan looked at her, then suddenly turned her gaze elsewhere, saying indifferently, “Alright.”
The two turned and walked out of the manor. As for why they didn’t ask the people in the manor…
Well, with Bai Luo, who had ulterior motives, and the eccentric Mr. Qiu, they really couldn’t trust them.
This time, the person beside her walked on the left, her steps noticeably slower than before. The two were almost walking side by side.
The autumn wind rustled their clothes. Wei Ziwan lowered her eyes, her gaze wavering, filled with deep complexity.
Suddenly, the wrist of her left hand was grasped.
Wei Ziwan turned her head in surprise, her eyes falling on her captured wrist.
A hand was holding her wrist, its fingers slender and soft.
Bai Zhi tightened her grip, pulling her wrist slightly, her tone laced with annoyance, “What are you thinking about? Not watching where you’re going?”
Wei Ziwan was taken aback, only then noticing the puddle just half a step away.
She pursed her lips, a hint of embarrassment flashing across her face. “I saw it. I was just about to step over it when you pulled me.”
Bai Zhi’s mouth twitched. This annoying person was clearly lying. She was about to step right into the puddle.
Seeing Bai Zhi’s annoyed expression, Wei Ziwan couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “Husband, what are you thinking about now? Not willing to let go?”
Hearing this, Bai Zhi quickly withdrew her hand and coldly snorted, striding ahead.
She shouldn’t have been so kind as to stop her. It would have been better if this woman had stepped into the puddle and maybe even fallen.
Hmph, an ungrateful troublemaker.
Watching the sulking figure walking ahead with her hands behind her back, Wei Ziwan reached out with her right hand to touch the wrist that had just been held, a faint smile curling her lips before she slowly followed.
After a half-day of inquiries, they returned to the manor just before sunset.
The farmers’ planting experience was undoubtedly rich. In summary, there were two methods suitable for their current situation: The first was to frequently smoke the fields. Though simple, it required daily repetition and was time-consuming and labor-intensive.
The second was to use the scents that pests disliked, either by making juice from insect-repelling herbs or by applying fishy water to the leaves. Though more cumbersome, it was effective for a longer period.
Without much thought, they chose the second method, leaning towards using fishy water since they didn’t know much about insect-repelling herbs, especially in late autumn when they were harder to find.
Over the next few days, Bai Zhi and Wei Ziwan began spraying the radish seedlings with fishy water.
Though slightly laborious, the results were remarkable.
Seeing the radish seedlings almost free of pests, Bai Zhi sniffed the fishy smell on her clothes. Though her expression showed disdain, her eyes were filled with laughter.
“Is this scraping the bone to cure the poison or just putting on a facade?” Bai Zhi sighed, unable to resist a sarcastic remark.
“This is called treating the root cause. Empty talk without action is just that—empty talk.” Wei Ziwan said softly, her words sharp, subtly mocking Mr. Qiu, who only knew how to talk.
The two exchanged a glance, their smiles silent, both feeling refreshed and clear-headed.
That day, the weather was clear and bright. It had been a month since they planted the radishes, and it was now November.
Once winter set in after this month, the radishes would be almost ready.
Bai Zhi looked at the radish tops peeking out from the soil beneath each seedling. Excited, she couldn’t help but want to dig them up to see how her radishes were growing.
She crouched down, touched the radish leaves, and sniffed them. “The fishy smell is almost gone, but there’s still about a month until they’re fully grown. Should we apply the fishy water again?”
Wei Ziwan, standing nearby, smiled and nodded. “It’s getting colder, so there will be fewer pests. But just to be safe, let’s give them a light spray. It shouldn’t be as labor-intensive as before.”
“Alright, I’ll do the spraying. You can rest this time, Wanwan.” Bai Zhi said, recalling what she had seen the previous day. This troublemaker must be on her period, secretly sewing menstrual pads in her room.
Why bother hiding it? She was a woman too; there was no need for such secrecy.
Wei Ziwan paused, a glimmer of something unreadable flashing in her eyes, but she shook her head. “It’ll be tiring for one person. I’ll help you. It’s fine.”
Bai Zhi quickly shook her head. “I can handle it alone.” She stood up and flexed her arm. “I’ve been feeling stronger lately. You can rest these next few days.”
Wei Ziwan pursed her lips, silently accepting this thoughtful gesture. “Alright.”
The late autumn wind carried a chill, but Bai Zhi felt an inexplicable warmth in her heart. They looked at each other for a moment, then awkwardly averted their gazes, the atmosphere strangely tense.
Four acres of land were still a lot for one person to handle.
After a full day of work, Bai Zhi was exhausted, her back and legs aching. After a bath, she sat on a stool, massaging her sore limbs.
Wei Ziwan watched quietly, then sighed softly and walked over.
As Bai Zhi rubbed her arms, a pair of hands landed gently on her shoulders, their touch soft and just the right strength.
Her body stiffened momentarily, but the hands on her shoulders paused briefly before continuing to knead.
Bai Zhi didn’t turn around, and neither of them spoke. That strange atmosphere quietly returned.
Feeling the shoulders beneath her hands relax, Wei Ziwan silently smiled, her gaze fixed on Bai Zhi’s head before shifting to the now-reddened ears.
Her heart skipped a beat.
She applied a bit more pressure with her fingers, teasing, “Husband, did you know you’re the first person I’ve ever served like this?”
“Is that so? I’m truly honored. You’re doing a great job.” Bai Zhi replied lazily, her eyes closed.
As she relaxed further, that strange tension began to dissipate.
Wei Ziwan’s fingers paused again, her tone shifting. “Yes, perhaps in a past life, I was a celestial maiden serving the Queen Mother, which is why I’m so good at this.”
She couldn’t help but laugh at her own words, her gaze lingering on those red ears. For a moment, her mind went blank, and she unconsciously reached out to pinch one.
In the next instant, her fingers were tightly grasped.
Bai Zhi still didn’t turn around, but her voice betrayed her embarrassment and anger. “So that’s how you were banished from heaven, huh?”
A celestial maiden? More like a maiden who dared to disrespect the Queen Mother.
This troublemaker actually dared to touch her ear. How… how utterly shameless.
Wei Ziwan chuckled. “Husband, you really know how to joke.” But she obediently withdrew her hand, returning it to Bai Zhi’s shoulders to continue the massage.
Bai Zhi snorted but didn’t say anything more, though her face remained as red as her ears for a long time.
This annoying troublemaker…
The next morning, Bai Zhi went to the field as usual to check on the radishes.
As she approached, her expression suddenly changed.
About two steps from the path, a large section of the field was in disarray. Radish leaves were torn and damaged, some radishes had been uprooted, and there were strange hoofprints left in the soil.
It looked as if some large animal had been frolicking there.
Bai Zhi bit her lip, looking around. Apart from a few scattered tenants walking along the paths in the distance, everything seemed normal.
She instinctively wanted to go back and find Wei Ziwan, but after a few steps, she stopped.
After carefully examining the traces in the field, she came to some conclusions before turning to leave.
Back at the manor, after hearing Bai Zhi’s account, Wei Ziwan thought for a moment before saying, “So you’re saying there are no footprints in the field, but those strange hoofprints are clearly man-made.”
“Exactly. The method is quite clumsy, and thankfully, not much damage was done. But if this keeps happening, we can’t exactly live in the field to watch over it. We need to find a way to prevent this.” Bai Zhi said calmly.
It seemed like someone was deliberately using such a crude method, not even bothering to hide it.
Rather than a covert act of sabotage, it felt more like an open provocation, as if saying: I just don’t like you, and I’m causing trouble for you. What can you do about it?
Wei Ziwan lowered her eyes. Clumsy methods, just like before.
Whether it was plucking osmanthus flowers or framing them for Manager Lu’s death, it was all so clumsy yet filled with malice.
“Do you think it’s the same person as before?”
“Who else could it be? Unless we’re just so detestable that others can’t stand us.”
After saying this, Bai Zhi laughed, though her eyes were cold.
Some people just enjoy acting on their malice. The malice of evil people is pure and without reason.
Wei Ziwan also smiled. “She likes to hide in the shadows, but we’ll act openly. Since the crops in the manor have been maliciously destroyed, we’ll go to the manor’s overseer for justice.”
