The Eunuch Has A Wife - Chapter 35
Bai Zhi smiled and nodded, as she had the same idea.
Since the enemy was hiding in the shadows, making it impossible to guard against them, and the two of them couldn’t manage everything on their own, it was better to use the strength of others—let the people of the estate handle the defense.
It was just a pity about the destroyed radishes. They had suffered an unjust disaster, not even having the chance to grow into a meal before their lives were cut short by those villains.
Before long, the two of them arrived in the main hall, quietly waiting for Bai Li.
Upon hearing the servant’s report, Bai Li quickly came to the front hall.
“Cousin, Miss Wei, what brings you here?”
As the saying goes, one doesn’t visit the temple without a reason. Seeing the two of them looking serious and faintly angry, his heart immediately sank. What had happened now?
The last time he had tea poured over his head had been too shocking, so after entering, Bai Li silently sat down across from them, keeping a relatively safe distance.
Bai Zhi’s eyes darkened, as if she had been struck by something. “To be honest, cousin, we’re here to ask you to uphold justice.”
“Uphold justice? What do you mean?” Bai Li looked at her, his eyes filled with confusion. Had something else happened in the estate that he didn’t know about?
Bai Zhi took a deep breath and slowly explained, “From the day all the osmanthus flowers in the estate were picked, to the death of Manager Lu coincidentally leading us to discover the body, it all seems like someone is deliberately targeting us. Don’t you have any thoughts on this, cousin?”
Thoughts?
Bai Li’s spirits lifted. Of course, he had thoughts, but he couldn’t do anything about it. His father had said to wait and see, just wait and see.
He glanced at Bai Zhi and said solemnly, “Cousin, you must be joking. The estate is so busy, how would I have time to think about other things?”
Bai Zhi laughed at this. “Cousin, if I weren’t your cousin, I’d almost suspect you’re in league with the villain behind all this.”
At this moment, Wei Ziwan, who had been sitting quietly drinking tea, set her cup down with a soft clink. She shook her head and said, “Husband, that’s not quite right. Who says cousins can’t secretly cause trouble? There are plenty of cases in this world where siblings become enemies, and relatives turn against each other.”
Listening to their back-and-forth, Bai Li’s expression darkened. These two were really… really as infuriating as last time.
Was he that kind of person? Did he have that much free time? Siblings becoming enemies? Drawing swords against each other?
“Miss Wei, you’re overstating things. Once I finish dealing with my current tasks, I will definitely investigate these two matters thoroughly and give you an explanation.”
As the young master of the estate, it was his duty. However, as for when exactly he would start the investigation, he would still have to wait and see.
Wei Ziwan smiled upon hearing this. “Cousin, there’s no need to use the ‘delay’ tactic. Right now, there’s a perfect opportunity for you to give us an explanation.”
Bai Li looked puzzled. “What opportunity?”
Wei Ziwan glanced at Bai Zhi.
Bai Zhi’s expression had already turned cold. She understood now—Bai Li’s attitude clearly showed he wanted to stay out of it, or perhaps he was indifferent to their plight. Even her uncle might be of the same mind.
With that, the initial joy of finding family had completely vanished.
She said coldly, “Cousin, do you think the villain hiding in the shadows will just sit quietly and wait for you to investigate her whenever you find the time?”
Bai Li looked slightly embarrassed and was momentarily speechless.
Bai Zhi continued, “Early this morning, I discovered that someone had maliciously destroyed the crops in the fields under the cover of night. Wei Ziwan and I are of little influence, so I was wondering if you could arrange for some people to patrol the area. Even if it’s not for us, it should serve as a warning to certain people that the estate isn’t some unmanaged wilderness where they can do as they please.”
Bai Li’s face stiffened. That was harsh.
As the young master of the estate, he had always worked diligently to manage it. How could it be compared to a wilderness?
“What exactly happened?”
Bai Zhi no longer had any patience for him. She coldly recounted what she had seen that morning. Seeing Bai Li remain silent, for a moment, she even began to consider where she would go if she left Lingjue Estate.
Bai Li was silent for a moment. His father had told him not to interfere, but looking at Bai Zhi and Wei Ziwan’s icy expressions, he felt that this matter needed to be handled carefully.
“Such a thing has happened? I will report this to Father immediately.”
With that, Bai Li fled the front hall, feeling as if his cousin’s gaze was filled with disappointment in him. It was too nerve-wracking.
In an instant, the front hall was empty again, leaving only the two of them looking at each other.
Bai Zhi played with the teacup on the table and sighed. “What do you think Uncle’s attitude will be?”
“If he intervenes, that would be best. If he ignores it, then this estate might not be a place to stay for long.” Wei Ziwan said, her gaze probing.
Would this person choose to find another path, or would she stay here and continue to outwit that Second Miss Bai?
Hearing this, Bai Zhi couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. This annoying troublemaker was thinking the same thing as her. It seemed they needed to plan an exit strategy soon.
She sighed deeply. “I just don’t understand.”
She didn’t understand the strangeness in the estate, Bai Li’s attitude, or Bai Luo’s inexplicable malice.
Her adoptive father had said that her uncle was a trustworthy person, but how could she explain his current hands-off attitude?
Wei Ziwan’s gaze was clear as she looked deeply at Bai Zhi. “Let’s wait for news calmly.”
It was only natural that she didn’t understand. After all, this person had always lived in seclusion, and though she was tactful and proper in dealing with people, she was still naive about the ways of the world.
This kind of situation was all too common. When there were two tigers on a mountain, they would inevitably fight.
Even in wealthy families, it was common to allow two heirs to compete, even tolerating some underhanded tactics. The winner would be the one worthy of inheriting everything.
It was utterly absurd, not considering that an heir who resorted to dirty tricks would hardly be capable of handling great responsibilities.
Even the imperial family operated this way, as there was only one throne, and each had to rely on their own abilities to become the victor. It was laughable.
The difference was that Bai Zhi had been forced into this situation.
Thinking of this, Wei Ziwan looked at Bai Zhi again, her gaze shifting slightly before returning to normal.
The news came quickly. That very night, the estate’s guards adjusted their patrols to include the fields.
Bai Zhi felt somewhat reassured. It seemed she could slowly consider her future plans.
Seeing her relax, Wei Ziwan smiled faintly. “It seems Uncle is a reasonable person after all.”
Not as absurd and ridiculous as she had feared. Otherwise, this estate truly wouldn’t be a place to stay.
Bai Zhi’s eyes brightened. “Yes, Uncle is a reasonable person.”
She remembered her first meeting with Bai Shu, his affectionate gaze didn’t seem feigned.
Wei Ziwan nodded silently, hoping he was a wise and sensible person.
In a corner of the estate, upon hearing that Bai Li had ordered the guards to expand their patrols, Bai Luo’s face turned pale.
Had her brother finally taken action?
Had he ultimately sided with those two bitches? It seemed her efforts were still not enough.
Even though he had raised her, was she still no match for bl00d relatives?
Fortunately, she had long been prepared for this, long since made her plans, so she wouldn’t be at the mercy of others.
“Let’s hold off on this matter for now. From this point on, it’s time for a real showdown. Be careful not to let anyone notice anything.” Bai Luo said sharply to the man kneeling on the ground.
“Yes, Second Miss. I will be careful.” the man replied as he stood up and left. His figure was burly, and his head remained slightly lowered, as if he had forgotten how to lift it.
After the man left, Bai Luo let out a cold, ambiguous laugh, her gaze dark as she looked outside.
With the estate’s intervention, life began to settle down. Quietly, winter arrived, and the radishes in the fields were ready for harvest.
Bai Zhi couldn’t help but sigh. This was what it meant to maintain a facade of peace. She wondered how long this calm surface would last.
Wei Ziwan glanced at the person sitting lazily by the door, basking in the sun like a lazy cat.
Her fingers twitched, remembering the softness of the ear she had once touched on a whim.
At that moment, Bai Zhi, drowsy, yawned and looked over. The next second, as if unable to resist sleep, she slowly closed her eyes.
Wei Ziwan’s heart tingled, as if a greedy cat had licked her.
She stared at Bai Zhi’s profile, her mind filled with the image of that lazy glance, the drowsy eyes that seemed to peer into her heart, leaving her feeling both sour and numb.
Wei Ziwan placed a hand on her chest, where her heartbeat had lost its usual rhythm, becoming fast and erratic.
She was momentarily stunned, then stepped forward and gently tugged on Bai Zhi’s ear. “Wake up, don’t sleep. You’ll catch a cold.”
As soon as she spoke, Bai Zhi, who hadn’t been deeply asleep, immediately opened her eyes.
Wei Ziwan’s hand quickly withdrew.
Bai Zhi, unaware, tilted her head back. The next moment, she rubbed her ear, feeling an itch.
Wei Ziwan’s breath hitched, and she quickly said, “Husband, you should think about what to do with our radishes.”
Radishes?
Bai Zhi was momentarily stunned. She put her hand down from her ear, a look of confusion on her face. “Yes, what should we do?”
She had inquired and found that many people planted radishes during this season, as no one wanted to leave their fields fallow. However, most families only grew enough for themselves, unlike them, who had planted a large amount.
But others had long since made arrangements with restaurants or estates that needed radishes, unlike them, who hadn’t planned ahead. With four acres of radishes, once harvested, they would pile up like a small mountain.
This problem truly stumped her. Blindly planting without a plan was indeed unwise.
Seeing her frown, Wei Ziwan’s expression returned to normal. “Most farming families grow some, but selling them individually is difficult. So, we can only hope to sell them to large restaurants, like Lou Shang Lou.”
Lou Shang Lou!
Bai Zhi was startled. She sat up straight and looked at Wei Ziwan with burning eyes. “Use the same trick again?”
Wei Ziwan smiled and nodded. That was exactly her thought.
Bai Zhi couldn’t help but say, “But I don’t know any other sweet soup recipes.”
Did this troublemaker know any?
