The Eunuch Has A Wife - Chapter 57
In the early morning, the cold wind howled outside. Bai Zhi pushed open the door, took a quick glance, and hurriedly closed it again, making sure no draft could disturb the person still sweetly asleep inside.
Her thoughts drifted to last night, her eyes filled with tenderness as she glanced at the figure on the bed. She quietly picked up the black leather notebook she had only briefly glanced at before.
As she read, her ears turned red.
Her mind was filled with images of Wei Ziwan, restrained yet filled with pleasure. So, that was how it could make Wanwan feel…
So, even just that could make someone lose themselves over and over again…
Footsteps sounded outside, and soon there was movement in the kitchen. It must be the auntie who cooked for them, already busy at work.
Bai Zhi closed the notebook and placed it back in the corner of the wardrobe.
She mentally reviewed what she had just read. When the time came for their wedding night, she must remember to start gently, very gently, so as not to hurt Wanwan…
She walked to the bed and gently kissed Wei Ziwan’s forehead, careful not to wake her, before leaving the room.
Bai Zhi thought about the decision she had made yesterday and headed towards Zhou â–¡’s courtyard. Fortunately, Bai Hongmo wasn’t there at this time, and only Zhou â–¡ was in the yard. Otherwise, Bai Zhi wouldn’t have known how to face her.
Seeing Bai Zhi arrive alone, Zhou â–¡ glanced towards the room behind her and asked, “So early? What brings you here, cousin?”
Could it be about her aunt? Although Zhou â–¡ hoped the mother and daughter could reconcile, she knew it was a difficult task. Her aunt’s temperament was too cold, showing no softness even towards her own daughter. Sigh…
“I came to ask Miss Zhou, are we still going to continue our competition?” Bai Zhi didn’t get straight to the point. For some reason, she hesitated.
Zhou â–¡ raised an eyebrow. Miss Zhou? Not cousin…
So, she didn’t even want to acknowledge her as a cousin. Sigh, this mother and daughter pair really gave her a headache.
After a moment of thought, Zhou â–¡ said, “Originally, we were going to take it step by step, but things have changed. The first challenge was meant to make you realize that the village roads need to be repaired. Only then can merchants travel freely, transporting grain and goods. As for the funds for the road repairs, we need to seek Elder Hu, who manages the treasury, to provide the money. After all, the people have contributed part of their harvest to the court, and the court should use it for the people’s benefit…”
Zhou â–¡ went on, citing various classics and references, but she didn’t notice the growing gloom on Bai Zhi’s face.
Bai Zhi’s eyes darkened. It seemed there was no need for the competition after all. Hadn’t she already guessed this? Why did she still ask?
She interrupted Zhou â–¡, “Miss Zhou, there’s no need to continue. I never intended to compete with you.”
Zhou â–¡ seemed taken aback. “What? What do you mean you never intended to compete? This challenge was prepared for you. My duty is to guide you…”
Seeing Bai Zhi’s increasingly cold expression, Zhou â–¡ finally sensed something was wrong and stopped speaking.
“We’re leaving this place.”
“Leaving? Where to?”
“The world is vast. There must be a place where we can settle down. Please inform Elder Bai on my behalf…” Bai Zhi spoke calmly, just as Bai Hongmo walked out of the room, having apparently overheard everything.
Bai Hongmo looked at Bai Zhi with an expression that was both complex and somewhat relieved. “Do you know what you’re giving up?”
Bai Zhi paused for a moment, then replied firmly, “I want to live the life I desire.”
Bai Hongmo’s eyes turned cold, her expression darkening. “Originally, I wasn’t sure how much of a chance you had, and I didn’t want to involve you. But now I’m telling you, if you’re willing, that position is yours. Even so, do you still want to live the life you desire?”
Her eyes bore into Bai Zhi, her expression a mix of expectation and encouragement.
Bai Zhi hesitated again. Why did she feel like this person was encouraging her?
“I only want to live the life I desire.”
She repeated her words, her tone unwavering.
Bai Hongmo looked into Bai Zhi’s eyes and suddenly laughed, though her laughter held no joy, only bitterness.
She laughed softly, then murmured to Bai Zhi, “I am not as brave as you.”
Bai Zhi remained silent. She didn’t fully understand, but she vaguely grasped something, though the thought was too faint to be clear.
The courtyard fell silent for a moment.
Bai Hongmo then turned to Zhou â–¡ and said, “□’er, go wait outside the courtyard.” She then looked at Bai Zhi and said coolly, “Come inside with me and tell me what kind of life you want.”
Bai Zhi nodded and followed her into the room.
Bai Hongmo didn’t close the door, as if intentionally leaving it open so that Zhou â–¡, standing dozens of meters away at the courtyard gate, could still be seen.
Zhou â–¡ stood with her back to the gate, obediently waiting outside.
The voices inside the room were too soft for her to hear, but she thought it must be her aunt finally showing some tenderness, still caring for her cousin after all. Otherwise, why would she ask about the life her cousin wanted?
She truly hoped the mother and daughter could reconcile.
As she thought this, the people inside the room came out. Bai Zhi calmly said to Bai Hongmo, “Mother—Mother, there’s no need to see me off. Tomorrow, I’ll accompany you to Qingshi Temple to offer incense.”
Bai Hongmo’s expression remained indifferent, but her words were less cold. “It’s freezing outside. Zhi’er, remember to dress warmly when you go out in the future.”
Zhou â–¡ stared in disbelief at the scene before her, feeling as if it were unreal. Was she still dreaming? Had her aunt and cousin really reconciled?
Bai Zhi softly acknowledged and turned to leave. As she walked away, she wiped the corner of her eye, which had unknowingly become wet.
Even if it was just an act, when that person called her “Zhi’er,” just that one word made her heart ache.
In the play or outside of it, who could tell? And no one knew how much longing she carried when she called out “Mother.”
Bai Zhi took a long time to calm her emotions before she could continue on her way.
From a distance, she saw someone standing in the courtyard, occasionally looking out, clearly waiting anxiously.
Bai Zhi’s heart softened. Wanwan must have missed her.
But as soon as she entered the courtyard, Wei Ziwan’s stern expression startled her.
“Wanwan, what’s wrong? Who upset you? It’s cold outside, let’s go inside and talk.”
Bai Zhi reached for Wei Ziwan’s hand but grasped only air.
Wei Ziwan’s face was cold. “Do you remember what you promised me at Lingjue Manor?”
Bai Zhi was taken aback. Why did it seem like she was the one who had upset Wanwan?
But she hadn’t done anything wrong!
Suddenly, she realized… yes, she hadn’t done anything…
She quietly approached and tried to take Wei Ziwan’s hand again, only to have it pulled away once more.
“Wanwan, are you upset because I didn’t tell you before I went out?” Bai Zhi remembered that at Lingjue Manor, Wei Ziwan had once seriously discussed with her that she must inform her before going out in the future. Bai Zhi had agreed at the time.
Had Wanwan been worried about her since then?
Bai Zhi looked at Wei Ziwan’s cold expression and, for some reason, felt a sweetness in her heart.
Seeing Wei Ziwan remain silent, she continued to explain, “I wanted to tell you, but I thought you were… very tired last night, so I wanted to let you sleep a little longer. Wanwan, I won’t do it again…”
Bai Zhi thought about last night. Although they hadn’t gone all the way, she had still brought Wei Ziwan pleasure multiple times.
By the end, Wei Ziwan had fallen asleep almost immediately, clearly exhausted.
Unexpectedly, Wei Ziwan’s expression grew even colder. “If you knew about last night—why did you still leave when you woke up—”
When she woke up, remembering everything from the night, her heart and mind were filled with Bai Zhi. She had wanted so badly to see this person, but where was Bai Zhi?
Not in the room, not in the kitchen, nowhere in the courtyard. She had been gone for so long before returning. It was infuriating.
And all her tender feelings and expectations had slowly faded.
Wei Ziwan thought of this, turned, and walked into the room.
Bai Zhi followed closely, feeling utterly wronged.
“You’re not allowed to come in.” Wei Ziwan entered first and closed the door, followed by the sound of a lock.
Bai Zhi looked at the closed door, feeling even more wronged. What had she done wrong?
She knocked softly on the door. “Wanwan, the wind is so cold outside.”
There was no response, but after a moment, Wei Ziwan’s voice came from inside. “The door isn’t locked.”
Bai Zhi’s eyes lit up, and she pushed the door open. Indeed, it wasn’t locked.
She saw Wei Ziwan sitting on the edge of the bed and walked over, half-embracing her. “Wanwan, don’t be angry. I missed you so much. It felt like three autumns had passed without seeing you.”
Wei Ziwan turned her head away, not responding, but she didn’t pull away either.
Bai Zhi felt a wave of relief. She must not be angry anymore.
Feeling bolder, she wrapped her arms around Wei Ziwan’s neck and leaned in to kiss those tempting lips.
“Ouch… it hurts.” Bai Zhi covered the corner of her mouth. Wanwan had bitten her.
“If I wake up and don’t see you again, I’ll bite you to death.” Wei Ziwan’s words were harsh, but her hand instinctively reached out to gently rub the reddened corner of Bai Zhi’s mouth.
Bai Zhi looked at Wei Ziwan’s slightly awkward expression and suddenly understood where she had gone wrong. “Wanwan, did you want to see me as soon as you woke up? I feel the same way. The first thing I want to see when I wake up is you.”
Wei Ziwan glared at her. “So you looked at me and then left.”
Bai Zhi shook her head. “No, I looked at you many, many times, and even secretly kissed you before I left.”
Wei Ziwan: “…” So this person had left satisfied, while she woke up to an empty room.
Bai Zhi’s eyes sparkled with amusement. She tightened her arms and pulled Wei Ziwan down onto the bed, lying on top of her.
She slowly leaned down and whispered softly, “I understand now. I’ll wait for you to wake up in bed from now on, so my Wanwan won’t have to miss me so much. Ouch—it hurts, it hurts—-.”
“Breakfast is getting cold. Get up.” Wei Ziwan gently pushed her.
Bai Zhi stood up, rubbing her lips, and complained, “Wanwan, if you keep biting me, people will think you’re cruel.”
Wanwan is so cruel. My lips must be swollen. I can’t face anyone today…
