- The Executed Saint Reincarnates as a Princess and is Loved by Her Older Brothers
- Episode 57 - Secret Passage
The guardsmen show no signs of waking up yet.
Glancing sideways at them soundly asleep, Lionel and Angela whispered to each other.
“Lil, it was fifteen years ago, but I didn’t kill the previous queen. It’s true.”
“Of course. There’s no way Jill would do something like that.”
Lionel’s immediate response is more delightful to Angela than anything else.
Even when she was condemned in her past life without anyone believing her, only Lionel had believed in Juliet, and remembering that made her eyes well up with tears.
“I want to know the truth behind the incident of the queen’s death. I want to uncover what really happened back then.”
As long as Juliet is innocent, the real culprit must be someone else.
Angela cast her gaze once more at the closed door of the forbidden room.
In that dark-colored book, there might be forbidden spells that can kill a person without directly laying a hand on them.
However, among the grimoires bound by black chains, there was only one that showed signs of having its seal broken. It was the one used by Lionel.
Therefore, regardless of who the culprit is, it is hard to believe they used forbidden techniques. The method used to kill the queen must have been a realistic one.
“The queen is the pinnacle of women in this country. She’s not someone the common folk can easily approach.”
The only people who could interact with the queen were the royal family and high-ranking nobles.
The attendants and maids who took care of his daily needs were all trustworthy individuals who had been thoroughly vetted before being hired.
The only exception was Saint Juliet. The queen, being from a noble family herself, despised Juliet, who had grown up in a poor orphanage.
“That’s why, on that day, I was surprised when I was suddenly ordered to heal the queen. Because the queen disliked me…”
Angela sank into the sea of memories.
I slowly and accurately recall the sights I saw and the words I heard fifteen years ago.
“Saint Juliet!”
In the temple filled with silence, it was the attendants serving the royal family who barged in noisily.
They pressed Juliet, who was offering prayers at the altar, and ordered her to hurry to the palace.
“Hurry up! The queen has summoned you!”
Shouted at in a domineering manner, Juliet recoiled.
“But… I have a healing appointment after this…”
“Charity to the common people doesn’t matter at all!”
One of the aides, irritated, raised his hand and poked Juliet.
Without a word, Juliet was taken to the palace and shoved into the queen’s sickroom, filled with a heavy miasma.
“Please heal me quickly. If you’re a saint, you should be able to do it, right?”
The queen furrowed her brow, as if her head was hurting. Her skin was rough, her limbs trembled slightly, and she seemed unable to exert any strength, but her dark, deep-set eyes glared at Juliet as if blaming her.
“The symptoms of the queen on that day were… a headache, dizziness, convulsions, fatigue, and she was completely exhausted…”
Reflecting on the memories of that time, Angela suddenly looked up.
The queen’s large, dark eyes glaring at Juliet with reluctance resurfaced in my mind.
It wasn’t just dark-eyed. That was.
“My pupils were dilated.”
Even though she was on her deathbed, the queen’s pupils were still open.
What kind of illness was the queen suffering from?
Even though Juliet asked the court physician for the name of the illness, they wouldn’t tell her, but they must have had some kind of findings.
“The reason I asked to come to this library building is because I thought there might be some clues left about the incident from fifteen years ago. But it probably isn’t that easy, right…?”
The court physician pays utmost attention to the health management of the royal family. If the queen were to fall ill, they would have surely recorded the treatment, and after her death, they would have certainly conducted an autopsy.
I was hoping that the document might still be there, or even better, that I could view it… but I was being naive.
This library wing can only be accessed by nobles with permission. There was no way they would have placed the autopsy results of a deceased royal in such a place.
“But I can’t believe they would just discard such important documents. I wonder if they might still be somewhere…”
“There is. It’s still there.”
Lionel nodded deeply.
“I once thought the same thing. Jill is innocent. I believe the real culprit is someone else, and I did my own investigation.”
“Lil…”
Angela clutched her chest at Lionel’s firm declaration that it was a wrongful conviction.
At the same time, I am convinced that there is indeed a separate place for storing only important documents.
“I can’t go in, right?”
There is no way Angela, a member of a foreign royal family, should be allowed to enter the room where documents equivalent to national secrets are kept.
If I approach him through official channels, it will undoubtedly reach Nathan’s ears. It’s clear as day that it will raise suspicions and lead to trouble.
“Alright…”
Lionel said with a cool expression.
“Let’s sneak in quietly.”
“Jill, are you okay?”
As they advanced while navigating the narrow passage, Lionel glanced back. His large hand firmly held Angela’s delicate hand.
Angela smiled.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
I was surprised when Lionel suggested we sneak in, but I was even more taken aback by the hidden passages concealed throughout the palace.
For example, there was a dummy book on the bookshelf, and when you pushed it in, the shelf moved and a staircase appeared.
It looked like a dead end, but part of the wall was a door, and when I lightly lifted and pushed it, I was able to pass through.
The mirror decorated in the corridor opened inward when the handle was turned like a spring, leading to this narrow back alley.
“Wow. I didn’t know there was a road like this.”
“It seems that this passage was originally created so that the royal family could escape when the castle was attacked by enemies. The designer must have been quite meticulous, as it is quite complex.”
Come to think of it, Lionel used to come to see Juliet when she was imprisoned in the dungeon.
Amidst the strict security, it was a mystery how they managed to sneak in, but they probably used a hidden passage like this back then too.
Eventually, beyond the narrow path, a bright light came into view.
“Here it is.”
