The Exiled Knight Takes Up Life as an Adventurer — A Former Captain's Secret Power and His Carefree Days in a Distant Land - Chapter 2
After being exiled from the knight order, I left the lord’s castle and headed toward the city center.
“No going back to the estate now.
I’m glad I at least said my goodbyes.”
As a knight commander, I had been granted land and had employed several servants.
Expecting the worst, I’d made sure to tell them there was a chance I wouldn’t be returning.
“Still, confiscating all my property feels excessive.”
My assets included years’ worth of saved wages and rewards, not to mention a productive orchard on my estate.
There were also my beloved warhorse and numerous weapons and suits of armor housed in the manor.
All together, their value easily exceeded tens of thousands of gold coins.
“At least I brought a little gold with me.”
Now, all I had on me was a leather pouch containing a hundred gold coins and my tool of choice—Threadfil.
I wasn’t allowed to carry a sword or wear armor.
“Gotta find work somehow…”
But before I could even think about employment, I needed to leave the country—
And I had just ten days to do so.
“Not enough time. Guess I’ll have to look for work after I cross the border.”
Still, the question remained: what could I even do at this point?
I’d joined the knight order at eighteen and spent fourteen years as nothing but a soldier.
That dedication had eventually earned me the title of regional commander—
“Only to end up exiled in the end.
And now I’m a thirty-two-year-old has-been… Am I even employable?”
I had no talent for business.
Opening a tavern or restaurant was out of the question—I couldn’t cook to save my life.
The more I thought about it, the more hopeless it seemed.
“The only thing I know how to do is fight…”
Still, as a knight commander, I’d needed to learn multiple foreign languages.
Thanks to that, I could read, write, and carry on conversations in most major tongues.
“Well, I’ll figure something out when I get there.
But first, I need to get the exit documents from the registry office… Ugh, such a pain.”
As I walked along the road leading to the administrative office, I passed by the local Adventurers’ Guild.
I came to a stop as a thought struck me.
“Adventurers, huh…
Come to think of it, I’ve heard that having an adventurer card lets you cross national borders.”
To leave the country legally, you need proper identification.
Normally, you’d have to apply for official documentation at the government office, which involved a time-consuming process.
But I’d heard that an adventurer’s card, issued by the Adventurers’ Guild—an international, massive organization—was accepted in place of a formal ID.
I didn’t know much about adventurers, having lived my whole life as a knight,
but a few of my subordinates had originally come from that background.
“Can’t hurt to ask.”
I placed my hand on the door to the guild.
The building was three stories tall.
The first floor was a spacious lobby, complete with several reception windows and even a bar counter.
“Wow… didn’t expect it to be this big.”
“Hey! You’re in the way, old man!”
“Oof—!”
Just as I stood near the entrance, some guy—clearly an adventurer—bumped into me.
No doubt he did it on purpose.
“What the hell are you just standing there for, old man?!”
“Relax. I didn’t do anything.”
“Huh? Don’t play dumb with me! Just looking at you pisses me off!”
“That’s… unnecessarily mean.”
Annoying as this was, I decided to settle it before it escalated.
I quietly reached for the Raphil, a thread spool I kept at my right hip.
It was a ring-shaped device, just a little smaller than my palm, easy to grip securely.
Threadfil was wound around the outer rim, and I could control it freely through the device.
I’d spent years—and a significant fortune—developing this custom-made Raphil.
Originally created for restraint, with enough training, it had evolved into a deadly weapon.
