Chapter 13: You Are My Lawful Wife.
The next day.
The morning sunlight filtered through the thin curtains, softly falling on her face.
Ruan Siyi was jolted awake by the alarm.
She slowly opened her eyes. The warmth from last night still lingered, but her arms were already empty.
Had Fu Ru’an left already?
Rubbing her slightly aching temples, a faint sense of loss crept over her. Her heart felt as if it had been gently pressed, leaving behind an indescribable, dull ache.
She stared at the empty bed for a moment before finally getting up, planning to hastily brew a cup of black coffee to make do for breakfast.
However, to her surprise, the moment she stepped out of the bedroom, a warm, fragrant aroma suddenly wafted into her nose.
The smell of food.
That rich scent of fried eggs and the mellow fragrance of rice somehow evoked a familiar feeling in her heart, stirring her drowsy appetite.
Ruan Siyi paused mid-step.
She froze for a second, then instinctively headed toward the kitchen.
The aroma grew stronger, accompanied by the faint clatter of a spatula. Her heartbeat gradually quickened, and an almost impossible guess surfaced in her mind.
The kitchen door was transparent, but the steam inside had fogged up the glass, blurring the figure within as if veiled in a layer of mist.
Fu Ru’an was dressed in simple loungewear, an apron cinching her waist tightly, standing with her back to Ruan Siyi in front of the stove, cooking a pot of congee.
The lid of the pot was slightly ajar, and the fragrance of the congee, mingled with the mild scent of rice, filled the entire kitchen. On the cutting board were neatly arranged plates of side dishes—
Pickled cucumbers, mixed tofu skin, and a plate of golden, enticing fried eggs already prepared on the table.
Her slightly curly long hair was casually tied up, revealing a slender, fair neck.
Sunlight streamed along the windowsill, casting a soft glow on her profile, as if she were enveloped in a gentle halo.
Fu Ru’an seemed completely absorbed, lifting her pale wrist to stir the porridge in the pot, occasionally leaning down to inhale its warmth.
Her expression was focused, her brows relaxed, devoid of the usual aloofness and cool elegance she displayed in front of the camera.
For a moment, Ruan Siyi was dazed.
The scene was so warm it felt unreal, like a fragment from a dream she had never dared to imagine becoming reality.
Fu Ru’an seemed to sense movement behind her and turned around, her gaze meeting Ruan Siyi’s.
The corners of her lips curled slightly as she set down what she was holding and walked over.
Through the fogged glass, she exhaled onto the door, creating a patch of condensation, then slowly raised her sleeve to wipe away the haze.
That small cleared spot was just enough for Ruan Siyi to see her face clearly—even without makeup, she was strikingly beautiful.
Fu Ru’an pressed the tip of her nose against the glass, her voice slightly muffled by the barrier, sounding a little distant.
“Awake?”
Her tone was tender, with a hint of playful mischief.
“Hurry up and wash up. Breakfast is almost ready.”
She pointed at the corner of Ruan Siyi’s mouth through the door.
There was a small patch of dried drool left there from sleeping.
Ruan Siyi wiped it away casually, her cheeks flushing a faint shade of pink.
She gave a slight nod and hurriedly ran to the bathroom, splashing her face with cold water.
The icy water trickled down her features in meandering streams, leaving her eyelashes glistening with moisture.
Leaning against the sink, she stared at her reflection in the mirror—
It was the exact same face she had in the real world.
Her honey-brown pupils shimmered like autumn water, resembling the eyes of a deer bending to drink by a riverside.
And now, the shy delight in those eyes was impossible to hide.
Ruan Siyi meticulously washed her face three times, making sure it was completely clean, then applied a layer of moisturizer before finally stepping back.
Taking a deep breath, she pulled open the door and walked out.
Part of the breakfast was already set on the dining table.
A plate of golden fried eggs, a few side dishes of refreshing pickles, and a cup of steaming soy milk.
Ruan Siyi couldn’t help but glance up at Fu Ru’an again.
Fu Ru’an leaned casually against the kitchen doorway, wearing a light-colored apron, its ties cinching around her slender waist.
Her waist was so thin, it looked like it could be easily encircled with just one hand.
The fabric of the apron swayed slightly with her movements, sending Ruan Siyi’s heart into a flutter.
Fu Ru’an lowered her head to pick up a bowl of plain congee, then turned around, meeting Ruan Siyi’s gaze with a faint but tender smile.
“What are you looking at?” She spun in a slow circle. “Is the apron pretty, or am I?”
The question short-circuited Ruan Siyi’s brain for a moment. She quickly lowered her head to hide the blush on her cheeks and stammered, “Both… both are pretty.”
Fu Ru’an raised an eyebrow slightly, the corners of her eyes curling with amusement.
She walked over, set the congee in front of Ruan Siyi, then circled behind her. Bending down slightly, she leaned close to her ear and whispered:
“I made this breakfast myself. Eat well—you’ll need the energy for work today. Work hard, earn money, and support me.”
Her breath carried the warmth of freshly cooked rice porridge, and the gentle whisper by her ear suddenly made Ruan Siyi’s heart beat faster, her earlobes unconsciously flushing red.
Ruan Siyi took a slightly awkward sip of the plain porridge that had just been served.
The soft, fragrant taste of rice spread in her mouth, and the smooth texture of the porridge instantly reminded her of the congee her mother used to make for her as a child.
The pickled vegetables and crisp cucumbers on the side perfectly balanced the mildness of the porridge. Though the dishes Fu Ru’an had prepared weren’t elaborate, they suited her taste just right.
“How does it taste?”
Fu Ru’an sat across from her with a bowl of porridge, her eyes carrying a hint of anticipation.
Ruan Siyi looked up at her, momentarily stunned, as that inexplicable emotion in her heart slowly spread.
She hadn’t expected Fu Ru’an to know how to cook, let alone that the flavor would be so similar to her mother’s—
As if this unfamiliar Omega had quietly learned her preferences all along.
Ruan Siyi nodded and replied softly, “It’s really good… It tastes a lot like what I had when I was little.”
“But why did you suddenly decide to cook today?”
Ruan Siyi couldn’t help but ask.
A mischievous glint flashed in Fu Ru’an’s eyes. “I’m not sure either. Maybe subconsciously, I just wanted to be good to you.”
“Consider it repayment for washing my intimate wear yesterday.”
Ruan Siyi immediately felt flustered.
The memory of yesterday’s blush-inducing scene made her ears burn even hotter.
Pretending she hadn’t caught Fu Ru’an’s implication, she lowered her head and took another spoonful of porridge, muttering under her breath:
“What kind of repayment is this… But it really is delicious.”
Fu Ru’an watched her reddened earlobes, the amusement in her eyes deepening.
She leaned against the dining table, arms crossed, and said nonchalantly, “Then I’ll make it often from now on, so you won’t keep eating those unhealthy takeouts.”
“Sister Fu really cares about me.”
Ruan Siyi looked up, her eyes teasing but also carrying a hint of probing.
Fu Ru’an, however, replied in a calm tone, “Of course.”
“After all, you are my—”
Her words paused briefly, her expression gentle yet laced with playful mockery.
“Lawful wife.”
Ruan Siyi nearly choked on her mouthful of porridge, hastily putting down her spoon, her eyes wide and round. The warm congee stuck in her throat, neither going down nor coming up, and her cheeks instantly flushed crimson.
“Cough, cough… Sister Fu, you—”
Covering her mouth, her voice tinged with embarrassment, she couldn’t help but cough twice.
Fu Ru’an, seeing this, remained perfectly composed, leisurely handing her a tissue, the teasing in her eyes completely unconcealed.
She leaned in slightly closer, her fingers brushing inadvertently over the back of Ruan Siyi’s hand, her voice soft yet carrying a meaningful undertone: “What, still not used to hearing that title?”
She deliberately slowed her speech, her tone lilting slightly at the end, as if intentionally provoking.
Ruan Siyi’s heart raced even more wildly at her teasing and quickly changed the subject: “No… it’s just that it feels a bit sudden, I’m not used to it.”
“After all, we’re just contractual wives, in name only.”
She added in a small voice.
Fu Ru’an couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation.
Who was the coward unwilling to go through with it last night?
And now she has the nerve to bring it up?
She let out a soft chuckle, leaning back in her chair, her gaze sweeping over Ruan Siyi with subtle implication: “The things I said and did last night were all the result of careful consideration.”
“Ruan Siyi,” she suddenly called her full name very seriously, “I genuinely want to be real girlfriends with you.”
Ruan Siyi immediately grew flustered, momentarily at a loss for how to respond.
Then she heard Fu Ru’an’s tone shift again.
“You know I’m twenty-eight, not eighteen. I have normal physiological needs-”
“Including sexual ones.”
“We’re still in the continuation period of our marriage, and I have no intention of seeking someone else. You wouldn’t want to see some messy scandal splashed across the headlines tomorrow, would you?”
Fu Ru’an spoke calmly, as if discussing the most mundane matter, yet her words carried an undeniable undertone of implication.
Ruan Siyi was momentarily speechless, her ears flushing crimson in an instant. She stared at the bowl on the table, unsure how to respond.
“Sister Fu…”
Her voice came out slightly hoarse, wanting to refute, but Fu Ru’an’s gaze seemed to have already seen right through her.
Noticing her reaction, Fu Ru’an’s expression softened further.
She let out a light sigh, as if coaxing a child: “Don’t worry, I’m not forcing you. I just want you to understand that since we’re a couple-whether in name or by agreement-there should at least be some basic trust and communication.”
“I’m willing to give you time to think and adjust.”
Her hand reached over, gently tapping Ruan Siyi’s chin to prompt her to look up.
“And…” Fu Ru’an’s voice dropped slightly, intimate as a lover’s whisper, “I rather think that last night, you didn’t really want to refuse either.”
Her fingertips brushed lightly against Ruan Siyi’s chin, an almost casual touch that sent a tingling current through her, leaving her entire body tense.
“What do you say, Ruan Ruan?”
Fu Ru’an narrowed her eyes slightly, her voice soft as a feather’s sweep, laced with amusement.
“Or is it that… you were actually a little eager yourself?”
Ruan Siyi startled at her words, and the blue crystal she had hidden in her pocket tumbled out, rolling onto the floor with a faint clatter.
