Chapter 14: Youthful Extravagance
Years later, under the rising sun, Ruan “The Embarrassment” Siyi would recall that distant morning when she had, as if possessed, pocketed a fallen rhinestone from Sister Fu’s intimate garment—only to drop it right in front of its owner.
She didn’t even know how she had managed to walk out of the restaurant under Fu Ru’an’s gaze, a mix of surprise and understanding, her limbs moving stiffly in unison.
Ruan Siyi opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Her throat felt blocked, as if any explanation would be utterly futile.
“Sister Fu…”
She was on the verge of tears.
“I’m really not a pervert.”
She just wanted to carry something of Fu Ru’an’s with her, since she’d be away from her for so long.
At least in this unfamiliar world, she’d have something familiar to keep her company.
To soothe her restless heart.
Fu Ru’an nodded dismissively, her expression hesitant.
“You could’ve just told me if you liked it,” she said, pausing before continuing slowly, “I have quite a few of this type.”
Ruan Siyi fell silent.
Her ears caught the key phrase: “quite a few.”
“Quite a few”… What did that mean?
Did it mean she’d be wearing them often for her in the future?
Her ears felt inexplicably warm, her heartbeat quickening for no reason.
There seemed to be a subtle, almost imperceptible hint of ambiguity in Fu Ru’an’s calm tone. Ruan Siyi suddenly realized she was fantasizing about future scenes:
Fishbone underwires meticulously outlining her full bust, sketching perfect curves, as if unintentionally revealing the cool allure in her bones.
The velvet’s dark hues made her skin appear even fairer, while the smooth silk shimmered with every slight movement, carrying an indescribable temptation.
“Could it really be—”
She didn’t dare think further, her mind burning with a strange sense of shame.
Out of the corner of her eye, Fu Ru’an noticed Ruan Siyi’s dazed, slightly foolish expression and smiled faintly, a trace of amusement in her voice: “What are you thinking about, Ruan Ruan? Your face is all red.”
The words snapped Ruan Siyi back to reality. She waved her hands hurriedly in denial: “N-nothing! Really!”
But the more she tried to explain, the more her voice stammered, as if protesting too much.
Ruan Siyi quickly dragged her suitcase along, bid Fu Ru’an a hasty goodbye, and pushed open the door—where a driver stood waiting.
But it was an unfamiliar face.
Not the same driver who usually chauffeured Fu Ru’an.
She turned back to look and saw Fu Ru’an’s previously gentle expression had turned cold, her tone far from friendly.
“Why are you here? Where’s Xiao Hou?”
Xiao Hou was the usual driver, a cheerful young woman who always wore her hair in a cute bun.
“This trip is longer and involves the highway. Xiao Hou is too inexperienced, so the CEO wasn’t comfortable letting her drive. She sent me instead,” the middle-aged woman at the door replied respectfully, her head slightly bowed, her expression unreadable.
“Now even my driver is being monitored?” Fu Ru’an’s voice was icy.
“If she’s so concerned, why doesn’t she come herself?”
“Young Miss Fu, you know your mother is busy with work affairs every day, swamped with responsibilities. She wouldn’t lower herself to personally oversee the itinerary of a…” The driver paused, searching for the right word, her tone dripping with undisguised disdain, “gold-digging Alpha.”
Innocent bystander Ruan Siyi: “…………”
Caught in the crossfire, Ruan Siyi stood awkwardly to the side, her temple throbbing.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to pretend she hadn’t heard anything.
The term “gold-digging Alpha” struck her heart like a hammer. The contempt from Fu Ru’an’s Alpha mother was conveyed unmistakably through the driver’s cold tone.
Ruan Siyi’s lips twitched in silent exasperation.
My luck is just terrible, she thought. First, I barely escaped the rhinestone incident, and now I’ve somehow become the center of attention again.
She glanced at Fu Ru’an, whose expression had grown even colder, her gaze sharp as a blade.
Slowly, Fu Ru’an spoke, her voice like ice: “My mother’s affairs are none of my concern.”
She paused, her eyes slicing through the driver like a knife.
“What she deems unworthy of her attention, I’ll make sure to take extra care of.”
The driver’s face paled slightly, and she immediately lowered her head, not daring to speak further.
Ruan Siyi felt the temperature around them drop abruptly and instinctively hunched her shoulders. “Sister Fu…”
She called out softly, wanting to say something, but the words died on her lips.
She didn’t know how to express the complicated emotions in her heart, nor could she guess what Fu Ru’an was feeling.
Fu Ru’an glanced at her, her expression still stern but seemingly unwilling to show too much in front of her.
She reined in some of the coldness, her demeanor softening slightly as she said to Ruan Siyi,
“Be careful on the road. Message me when you arrive.”
Hearing the chill in Fu Ru’an’s voice, Ruan Siyi’s heart trembled, and she bit her lower lip lightly.
She sensed something deeper beneath Fu Ru’an’s displeasure—
It wasn’t just simple frustration but something closer to disappointment or wariness.
And it wasn’t just directed at the driver. It seemed more like… it was aimed at the person behind the driver—the current CEO of the Fu Group, Fu Ru’an’s Alpha mother, Fu Yunxi.
Ruan Siyi carried her luggage and followed the driver out the door.
The summer heat hit her like a wave as soon as she stepped outside, the sun scorching her skin.
Even in such sweltering weather, she couldn’t help but shiver, as if the earlier bone-chilling cold still lingered in the air.
Fu Ru’an’s words about “taking care” of her had stirred something in her heart, but Ruan Siyi knew it wasn’t just about her—
It felt more like defiance, or perhaps resistance, against Fu Yunxi.
True to Fu Ru’an’s mother’s words, this driver was clearly a veteran, her skills far superior, the ride smooth and comfortable.
Ruan Siyi yawned slowly, her head tilting to the side as she drifted off to sleep.
Through the rearview mirror, the driver glanced at Ruan Siyi, who had fallen asleep almost immediately after getting in the car, and couldn’t help but twitch her lips in exasperation.
After a while, confirming that Ruan Siyi was genuinely and carelessly fast asleep, she pulled into a rest stop, put on a single Bluetooth earpiece, and began reporting to her boss:
“CEO, Miss Ruan is on her way. She’s currently sleeping very soundly.”
Her voice was respectful and cautious, transmitted through the earpiece.
There was a brief silence on the other end before Fu Yunxi’s calm voice responded: “Proceed as planned. Ensure her safety throughout the journey.”
This was a critical period in the Fu family’s internal power struggle. Any potential mishaps had to be prevented—
Whether it was kidnapping, surveillance, or some scheme targeting Fu Ru’an.
Ever since Fu Ru’an had presented as an Omega, the board members had more or less expressed concerns, leaving her at a disadvantage in both the power struggle and her standing within the family.
So what if she looked down on Ruan Siyi?
She wouldn’t let Ruan Siyi become another variable on her daughter’s path to succession.
The driver nodded slightly and replied softly, “Understood. However… she doesn’t seem to be wary of you at all. It’s as if she completely trusts me.”
Fu Yunxi’s voice remained indifferent: “She doesn’t need to be wary. Just do your job.”
She paused, her tone carrying a faint warning.
“Don’t ask questions that aren’t your concern.”
The driver’s heart skipped a beat, and she hurriedly replied, “Yes, CEO.”
“CEO… there’s one more thing…”
The driver hesitated, unsure how to broach the subject.
“Speak.”
“Earlier this morning… I noticed Young Miss Fu’s lips seemed a bit swollen… and there were faint marks on her neck…” She hesitated before adding, “And now this gold-digging Alpha looks exhausted and sleepy…”
She concluded: “CEO, should we remind them to take care of their health? They shouldn’t indulge so recklessly just because they’re young.”
Fu Yunxi: “…………”
The driver waited for further instructions, only to realize the call had already ended.
She glanced sideways at Ruan Siyi, still peacefully asleep.
The summer sunlight streamed through the car window, casting a warm glow on her cheeks, her breathing even and untroubled.
Ignorance truly is bliss.
Ruan Siyi fell into a deep sleep in the car, the sunlight outside filtering through the windows and gently draping over her.
Her breathing gradually steadied, and in her drowsy state, she seemed to slip into a dream.
In the dream, it was her first meeting with Fu Ru’an.
Dream-Ruan Siyi was still a teenage girl, wearing a faded, oversized school uniform, her eyes slightly red as she knelt in the corner of a small bedroom, hands clamped over her mouth, desperately stifling her sobs.
A few days earlier, her mother—the Fu family’s maid—had passed away suddenly. Out of gratitude for her mother’s years of service, the Fu family had taken her in, promising to continue her education.
She had thought she could accept this reality, that she’d buried her tears deep inside. But once the condolences and funeral rites were over, once she was completely alone in this entirely unfamiliar environment—
As the initial shock and disbelief gradually receded like a tide, the loneliness and trauma lingered like an inescapable fog, tearing and churning inside her day and night.
The room’s dim lighting felt suffocating as night deepened.
The expensive silk pajamas Aunt Fu had prepared for her still lay neatly folded at the head of the bed, untouched.
The bed smelled fragrant—not like the sun-dried scent of home but like a sleep aid perfume, a single bottle easily costing five figures.
The desk lamp’s light spilled through the slightly ajar door.
Curled up in the corner, she didn’t notice the door wasn’t fully closed.
Until she heard a voice from outside.
“Still awake at this hour?”
Her head jerked up.
A beautiful girl stood in the doorway.
Her long, dark hair cascaded freely, but her eyes were as bright as the moon, carrying a cool, luminous clarity.
Like a goddess from Greek mythology, she wore a ankle-length nightgown, leaning against the doorframe with a grace and poise beyond her years.
The girl seemed slightly nearsighted, her lovely eyes narrowing slightly as she took in the sight of Ruan Siyi curled up in the corner—like a drenched stray puppy.
Her voice held a note of surprise.
“Are you crying?”
