Chapter 61: Should I Help You Put It On? Sister.
“What are you doing, Ruan Ruan?”
Fu Ru’an struggled to speak, her words muffled and indistinct under Ruan Siyi’s palm. Ruan Siyi could only feel the warm exhales against her hand, sending waves of tingling sensations through her skin.
“Someone’s coming outside.”
Fu Ru’an reached out to push against her shoulder, momentarily forgetting she was still clutching the hem of her own clothes. The fabric drifted down onto Ruan Siyi’s head, which was currently buried against her chest. Meanwhile, the hands she had used to push Ruan Siyi away were now pinned above her head against the wall, her wrists firmly gripped by the same hand that had been covering her mouth.
Finally freed, Fu Ru’an could speak clearly again.
“Ruan Siyi! Did you hear me?” she whispered urgently, lowering her gaze. “Someone’s coming outside!”
How could she still be fooling around like this?
What if they got caught?
“Sister Fu, they won’t—”
Ruan Siyi looked up, her dewy, grape-like eyes glistening as they met Fu Ru’an’s gaze, her lips still holding onto a half-ripe fruit.
The image struck Fu Ru’an like a direct hit to her senses.
“You…” Fu Ru’an tilted her head slightly, the tips of her ears flushing a noticeable shade of red. A wave of heat traveled from her ears all the way to the gland at the back of her neck. “Stop messing around. They’re waiting for us.”
“Waiting for us?” Ruan Siyi loosened her grip slightly, enunciating each word through gritted teeth as she repeated Fu Ru’an’s last few words. “You mean Lu Youning?”
“Lu Youning?” Fu Ru’an’s eyes widened abruptly, her tone laced with disbelief. “Why is she here?”
Just a moment ago, Ruan Siyi’s sudden, frenzied behavior left her no time to hear what the people outside were saying before the quick and fierce Alpha pinned her against the wall.
Could the person outside be Lu Youning?
Since her engagement with the Lu family was called off, her contact with Lu Youning had been limited to the occasional formal, polite group holiday emails. She’d only heard that Lu Youning had gone abroad a few years ago and hadn’t expected her to be back already.
But none of this had much to do with her, nor did she particularly care.
Ruan Siyi noticed the confusion in her expression—there seemed to be no trace of nostalgia for her “ex-fiancée” or “childhood friend”—and only then did the tension in her clenched jaw ease slightly. The emotions that had been wound tight since hearing that name also relaxed a little.
It seemed Fu Ru’an had no idea Lu Youning had returned to the country, let alone that she had become the China CEO of Laurel.
All that talk of childhood bonds—pfft.
If she hadn’t even been notified about something like this, their relationship couldn’t have been that deep.
For some inexplicable reason, Ruan Siyi’s mood improved considerably.
“Ah—!”
Fu Ru’an let out a trembling gasp, but with her waist and wrists pinned, she couldn’t break free. And because there was someone outside, she didn’t dare make too much noise, so she swallowed the sound back, her peach-blossom eyes glaring at Ruan Siyi in reproach.
“What are you doing?”
“Ah—”
Only when Fu Ru’an snapped at her did Ruan Siyi snap out of it, hurriedly retracting her teeth. The fruit, having been abruptly gnashed by her sharp bite, began to secrete a small amount of juice from its tip. The sticky liquid glistened on Ruan Siyi’s lips as she soothingly licked and kissed it for a moment before daring to whisper an apology.
“Sorry, sis, I got a little distracted just now.”
Outside the door, Lu Youning had been waiting for a while. Despite knocking, there had been no response—only faint, indistinct noises, as if she might have imagined them.
So she rapped her knuckles against the door again, patiently repeating, “Is anyone there? I’m from Laurel.”
This time, under Fu Ru’an’s heavily warning gaze, Ruan Siyi fell silent, pressing her lips together as she listened to her reply to Lu Youning outside.
“Yes, we’re here. Please wait just a little longer—we’ll be right out—mmph—”
Fu Ru’an’s words were cut short as she felt Ruan Siyi once again graze her teeth over that spot, taking advantage of her distraction with the commotion outside.
But unlike the last time, which had been accidental, this was undeniably deliberate.
The tail end of her sentence abruptly shifted in tone, carrying a short, muffled moan.
“What’s wrong?” Lu Youning detected the oddity in her voice and frowned, asking, “Did you bump into something? Can you still walk?”
Ruan Siyi: “……”
For a moment, she couldn’t decide if this was a good or bad thing.
The good part was that the so-called “male lead” from the original novel seemed somewhat lacking in knowledge about matters of intimacy.
The bad part was that anyone who could ask such a question sounded like a perpetually single Alpha.
“Yeah,” Fu Ru’an seized the excuse, “I just knocked my knee against a chair. It’s nothing serious.”
As she spoke, she bent her knee slightly, nudging Ruan Siyi’s thigh as a signal to let go.
Only then did Ruan Siyi reluctantly release her, pouting as she pulled the sponsor’s hoodie over her head and put it on properly.
Outside the door, Lu Youning let out an “Oh,” though her tone was hard to read. “So you’re fine.”
It was unclear whether she was relieved or disappointed.
Fu Ru’an didn’t bother responding further and simply picked up her own clothes to change into.
When the two of them finally stepped out, the mirror reflected Fu Ru’an in deep gray paired with bright orange, while Ruan Siyi wore creamy white with the same vibrant accent. True to its reputation as a top-tier sportswear brand, the design and cut were impeccable, and the outfits looked strikingly well-matched on them.
Just before Fu Ru’an pushed the door open, Ruan Siyi quickly closed the distance between them, wrapping an arm around her waist. Her scorching palm pressed against the fabric, the heat seeping into Fu Ru’an’s skin.
The sudden move made Fu Ru’an glance down at her in question.
Why does Ruan Ruan seem… especially clingy today?
Just as Fu Ru’an’s hand touched the door, Ruan Siyi beat her to it, unlocking it with a “click” and pushing it open.
Lu Youning appeared before her.
It was clear she had just returned from a trip, her demeanor still carrying a hint of weariness from the journey, mingled with the scent of Chanel 1957 perfume. Her aura seemed like a blend of orange blossom, jasmine, and vanilla—her deep brown, long, wavy hair framing a pair of sharp, strikingly intense eyes. Her white suit draped elegantly, crisp and clean, paired with a black-and-white checkered shirt underneath, evoking the image of a decisive monarch on a chessboard, exuding the same commanding presence. The silver pendant around her neck shimmered brilliantly, like a star fallen to earth.
No wonder she was the beloved protagonist—her looks were on par with Fu Ru’an’s, first-rate in every way, yet carrying an added edge of aggression.
“Fu Ru’an,” Lu Youning’s voice was just as distinctive, vibrant like orange blossoms, though now laced with surprise, “You crashed into something? To the point you need someone to support you while walking?”
“…” Fu Ru’an was speechless. “No.”
Ruan Siyi tightened her grip around Fu Ru’an’s waist: “President Lu doesn’t have a partner yet, does she? You’ll have to understand—this is just how married couples are.”
Lu Youning narrowed her eyes and shot her a glance. Whether it was Ruan Siyi’s imagination or not, that look seemed to carry a hint of disdain.
“Is this how you treat your senior after so long apart?”
Senior?
Ruan Siyi was confused.
What senior?
Was Lu Youning her senior too?
“Don’t bully her,” Fu Ru’an sighed helplessly. “She’s having some memory issues.”
After saying this to Lu Youning, she turned to Ruan Siyi and calmly explained, “You don’t remember, but in high school, she was in the same class as me. She was the perpetual second-place on the grade rankings.”
Lu Youning’s expression visibly darkened, as if storm clouds had suddenly gathered.
“What’s the point of bringing up those old things again?”
As soon as the words fell, she turned and walked away first, her high heels clacking loudly with every step, each one firm and resounding.
“Let’s go, follow me.”
After that, the shoot proceeded according to the schedule. Following the director’s instructions and the script provided earlier, they took promotional photos first, then filmed the promotional video.
Although everything went smoothly, by the time the entire process was completed, it was already evening.
“Thank you for your hard work, everyone.”
Lu Youning bought milk tea for all the staff on set as a token of appreciation, then handed Fu Ru’an and Ruan Siyi each a bottle of slimming juice. “I know people in the entertainment industry watch their diets, so this is a juice made by my family’s auntie using vegetables and fruits.”
Fu Ru’an nodded and let Ruan Siyi accept it.
Ruan Siyi eagerly unscrewed the cap and handed the bottle back to Fu Ru’an.
Fu Ru’an had only taken one sip when she felt a pair of eyes fixed on her.
She was sitting in a chair and looked up to see Lu Youning staring at her.
“What’s wrong?”
Lu Youning let out a light “tsk” sound: “Have you gotten so weak now? You can’t even unscrew a bottle cap yourself. If I were competing against the current you, I’d definitely win more medals in the sports meet.”
Back then, Fu Ru’an was truly fierce. Even after presenting as an omega, she could still dominate events traditionally ruled by alphas, winning gold with her sheer skill.
“Sister Fu can still do it now!” Ruan Siyi couldn’t help retorting. “It’s not that she can’t unscrew it—it’s that I wanted to do it for her.”
Lu Youning responded dismissively, “Oh.” Then she turned back to Fu Ru’an and asked, “Your little follower has grown so big, so how come her brain hasn’t gotten any sharper? She’s still mindlessly fangirling all day long—”
She mimicked Ruan Siyi’s tone: “‘Sister Fu is the best!’ ‘Sister Fu is so amazing!'”
After saying this, she shuddered first, letting out an “Ew.”
Disgusting. Such a nauseatingly sweet couple.
Ruan Siyi’s face flushed red: “That’s not true!”
Fu Ru’an couldn’t stand the two of them bickering like children. She stood up and tugged at the hood of Ruan Siyi’s jacket: “Let’s go.”
Ruan Siyi no longer had the energy to argue with Lu Youning over trivial matters. She hurriedly grabbed her phone and the drink from the table and trotted after Fu Ru’an like an eager puppy.
“Leaving already?” Lu Youning wanted to persuade them to stay. “It’s been so long since we last saw each other. Let me treat you to dinner tonight.”
“Another day. We’re too tired today.”
They had been busy all day, especially during the fitting room episode—it had been quite exhausting.
“Alright then.” Lu Youning waved at them. “I’ll head to the office to work overtime tonight.”
Once they got home, Ruan Siyi finally couldn’t suppress her curiosity any longer. Lying on the bed, she asked, “Did I know Lu Youning before too?”
Fu Ru’an was doing her skincare routine and, without looking up, replied, “Yes, you did. On several weekends when I took you out to have fun, it was Lu Youning who covered for me in front of my mother.”
Oh.
A wave of embarrassment washed over Ruan Siyi’s heart.
The male lead is actually pretty nice, huh.
“What about you? What’s your relationship with her like?” Ruan Siyi pressed on. “Between the two of you, is it just an ordinary friendship, or is there…”
She paused to consider her wording. “A slightly different kind of feeling… I mean, like a close friendship or something. Nothing else!”
Fu Ru’an’s hand, applying moisturizer, halted for a moment as she thought back. “Just friends, I’d say. We got along fine. The engagement was something our elders insisted on. Neither of us was interested in the other, so we never took it seriously.”
Ruan Siyi was about to relax when Fu Ru’an’s next words made her tense up again instantly.
“But she did send me a love letter once…”
Before Fu Ru’an could finish, Ruan Siyi’s hurried footsteps approached her. The Alpha’s strong arms lifted her up and carried her straight to the bed.
“What are you—I haven’t finished applying my moisturizer.” Fu Ru’an nudged her arm, confused.
“It’s fine. It’ll all be licked off by me soon anyway.”
Applying an extra layer now would just mean more glycerin for her to consume—it wouldn’t do much for skincare. Might as well skip it.
“What… What nonsense are you spouting again? Let me finish first…” Fu Ru’an was startled by the pheromones Ruan Siyi was emitting. “Don’t rush…”
“I’m not rushing,” Ruan Siyi said gently as she laid her down, then pulled out the green cheongsam from the wardrobe. “I just remembered this dress is dry now.”
She buried her face in the fabric and took a deep breath in front of Fu Ru’an. “It still smells like sunshine—warm and cozy.”
Meeting Fu Ru’an’s gaze, Ruan Siyi looked up at her, her voice hoarse and dry. “Sister, should I help you put it on?”
