The Sound of the Harem Collapsing
“It’s a bit late to ask, but what should we call each other now?”
“How about we keep calling each other the same way we always have?”
“We’ve been calling each other by our first names all along.”
We both laughed at how the habit of calling each other by first names was now causing some awkwardness.
And then we started talking about what to do from now on.
What we decided was that we should occasionally express our feelings to each other. Especially when we feel like we’re misunderstanding each other, like we did this time.
We cared for each other.
I was happy.
But I also wanted to make Shizuku feel happy and wanted her to know that.
So, I made sure to ask her how she truly felt.
And I decided to respect her feelings and find a middle ground.
That’s what I decided.
—
A few days later.Â
One day, something seemed off in the classroom where Ichijo was.
It was the way everyone in the harem was looking at him.
Up until now, the guys had envied Ichijo’s harem. They were sending him glares and muttered curses.
But now, those glares had turned into curiosity, as they wondered how things would unfold.
From the girls, I could hear someone muttering,Â
“Looks like the time’s up.”
What happened? The guys had been glaring at Ichijo with resentment before.
“Shizuku, what’s going on here?”
“I don’t know either…”
As we exchanged puzzled looks, someone who had been studying in the same class as Ichijo came over to us.
He put his arm around my shoulder, making sure Ichijo couldn’t hear, and spoke to me.
“Yo, Higashitani. Thanks to you, it looks like we’re about to see something interesting.”
“Eh? What do you mean?”
“Can’t you recognize it? Oh well, just listen.”
He went on to explain what had happened.
Apparently, I had pulled Shizuku out of Ichijo’s harem and we’d become a couple. Which was the catalyst for everything.
In Ichijo’s harem, there were boys who cared about each of the girls.
They didn’t want to hurt anyone or confuse them, and they had kept their distance. They were hoping for the girls’ happiness.
But when I acted, Shizuku turned toward me.
If I hadn’t done anything, there was no way she would have looked at me.
Ichijo was being deaf to the feelings around him. He had ignored her and, worse, disregarded her feelings. It was making her resentment build up and her affection fade.
That was the chance.
Instead of letting someone like him make her unhappy, I would make her happy.
I had made up my mind to act, with the belief that it was better to regret doing something than regretting doing nothing.
And the other boys, who had previously envied and resented Ichijo’s harem, now became curious about how many girls would be taken away and were watching with interest.
The situation had shifted.
“So, that’s what happened…….”
“Yeah, thanks for the material.”
“I didn’t mean to provide any material, though.”
“True. By the way, don’t end up like him, okay?”
“I won’t.”
Satisfied with my response, he patted my back like a motivational gesture and went back to class.
I decided that I would cherish Shizuku.
When I looked over at her, I saw she was looking at me too.Â
Our eyes met, and we both blushed.
“Sh-should we head back to the classroom?”
“Y-yeah!”
Feeling a bit embarrassed, we went back to our classroom.
In our classroom, 2-B, we sat across from each other. We were having a lively conversation when I overheard Shizuku muttering something.
“I bet all the girls in the harem are going to be swayed by the boys who are actually making moves.”
I decided to ask her about it.
“What do you mean by that?”
“You heard me, huh? Well, I’ll tell you. Since I was the one involved, I can say this, but I really wanted to be the number one.”
“I understand, since I’ve been helping out with that.”
“But Ichijo-kun doesn’t focus on just one girl, does he?Â
If he’s like that, then I’d rather be with someone who sees me and thinks about me. That’s the kind of happiness I want.”
“So, you think that harem will fall apart?”
“Exactly.”
Shizuku was once one of the girls in that situation. If she says so, then it must be true.
By pulling Shizuku out of Ichijo’s harem, the collapse of the harem began.
But it wasn’t just my action that caused it. The foundation was already unstable. My actions simply sped up what was bound to happen.
It was Ichijo’s fault for not choosing anyone.
