- Chapter 1 - “If You Don’t Do the Mission, Die”
Pain… agony…
Every muscle, every bone, every breath felt like a brand-new torment. Ning Shu experienced the pain of death all over again.
Wait… she had already died, hadn’t she?
Then why did this pain feel so real?
Questions flooded her mind, but they were quickly drowned by a tide of pain, leaving only a faint thread of rational thought.
Dead or not, she could not endure this suffering!
“Damn it!”
Ning Shu summoned all her strength to open her eyes and take in her surroundings.
She was surrounded by greenish water. The suffocating pressure intensified, her lungs felt like they might explode.
She struggled, but her strength had long since been drained. The more she struggled, the faster she sank. She closed her eyes again, waiting for death.
“Not even a shred of will survive. Useless!”
A cold, mocking voice rang in her ears. Ning Shu frowned. If she could speak, she would’ve definitely thrown back some scathing words.
She wanted to live more than anyone, but her strength wasn’t enough.
The sound of rushing water grew louder, her senses slowly slipping away. Having died once already, she didn’t feel much fear, only a profound calm.
After all, she was alone. No one would grieve her death. The world would lose nothing but a useless person perfectly fine.
Just as she was about to succumb to darkness, she thought she heard that mocking voice again. But this time only a single snort.
Ning Shu chuckled wryly. At this point, she didn’t even have the energy to argue.
The next second, the water surged violently, as if carried by a fierce wind, rushing toward an unknown direction.
The death she expected never came.
The current swept her up, and she was flung into the air, breaking the surface of the water and seeing light once more.
“Useless! Here’s your chance to live again, don’t waste it!”
The voice sounded again, sharp and insistent. Ning Shu hadn’t even reacted when she was slammed onto a patch of open ground. The thick grass softened the fall somewhat, but it was still a harsh landing. Ning Shu lay there for a long time, stunned.
She stared blankly at the deep blue sky, processing what she had just heard.
“A chance to live again…”
So she really had died. This was her rebirth.
Yes!
If she had been reborn years earlier, she could have bought lottery tickets, invested in the entertainment industry, hired handsome young men, flirted with rising actresses, and reached the pinnacle of life!
Excited, Ning Shu flipped upright, eager to embrace this second chance.
But something felt off. In most novels, the heroine wakes up in her own bed in a specific past year. Why was she in a godforsaken place like this?
Looking around at the towering mountains and the green lake nearby, she had a sinking feeling in her chest.
[Congratulations, Host! You are the 99,999th chosen by the Main God. I am your personal system, Chacha. From now on, I will accompany you for all missions, protect you, solve your problems, and work tirelessly for you…]
“Okay, …” Ning Shu cut it off. “Stop showing off your vocabulary. I just want to know what all this nonsense means.”
A “Main God system mission”? Was this supposed to exist in the real world?
She had read many fantasy and cultivation novels, but Ning Shu was a firm materialist. Supernatural events only existed in stories, not in reality.
Yet this little voice suddenly appearing in her head was beyond her control. Her beliefs were starting to crumble.
[Host, you are dead in the real world. The Main God has chosen you for a mission and given you a chance to be reborn. Complete all assigned tasks to obtain a Resurrection Card.]
Chacha explained briefly. Seeing Ning Shu’s disbelief, it directly transmitted the current world’s mission into her mind.
Ning Shu was hit by the overload of information before she could react. Just when her brain recovered, it began to ache again.
She spent some time digesting the information, convincing herself: she was now a fragment of a soul inhabiting another person’s body. Only by completing these “missions” could she return to her original life.
The original girl had a tragic life. Raised in a brothel by her mother, she was timid, quiet, and introverted.
After her mother died, she traveled to the capital to find her biological father, only to be publicly humiliated by her father’s wife, losing all dignity.
Unable to bear the shame, she left in anger. Along the way, a man with ill intentions tried to take advantage of her. Helpless as a woman, she was saved at the last moment by a kind young man.
His name was Long Tao, a disciple of a small sect. Handsome, upright, he inspired admiration in her. Boldly, she asked to follow him, even as a servant.
Long Tao seemed to have been waiting for her words. He agreed and took her along, treating her as a master-servant.
Over time, the original girl fell deeply in love with Long Tao. He knew of her feelings but pretended ignorance, neither accepting nor rejecting, quietly enjoying her devotion.
When she finally confessed, he told her he was already betrothed. Shocked and heartbroken, she tried to leave, but he used affection to persuade her to stay as his servant.
Later, he pursued the Ning family to fulfill his engagement. The Ning family rejected him because she was poor. He didn’t give up and staged a “hero-saving-beauty” scenario to win the favor of Ning Han, his fiancée.
The original girl was completely unaware of all this.
Eventually, Ning Han discovered the long-time maid, grew jealous, and confronted the original girl. Only then did she realize that Long Tao’s fiancée was her half-sister, the beloved Miss Ning. She was just a lowly servant, unworthy to even speak in front of Ning Han.
Ning Han treated her kindly in public but mocked and humiliated her in private.
The original girl’s resentment built over the years, reaching its peak when Ning Han humiliated her mother. She abandoned her passive nature and struck Ning Han fiercely.
Ning Han initially tried to retaliate but softened when Long Tao appeared. She cried, asking the original girl what she had done wrong. The original girl, unable to explain, was forced to apologize.
Frustrated, she asked Long Tao whom he truly chose her or Ning Han. Naturally, he chose Ning Han, who was advantageous for his future, but he wanted to keep the devoted maid to showcase his charm.
The original girl saw through him and demanded a choice. Ning Han feigned reasonableness to prevent her from troubling Long Tao.
The original girl could take no more and struck again. Long Tao, protecting Ning Han, drove her to the cliff. Disheartened, she leapt to her death.
And then… There was nothing. She died. Ning Shu arrived.
Ning Shu’s mission: make those who wronged the original girl pay their dues.
This sounded simple, but for Ning Shu, it was like climbing a mountain.
Long Tao and Ning Han were far stronger than her, and even a random Ning family servant could overpower her. How could she exact revenge?
Ning Shu touched the wound on her left shoulder blade, still sore from Long Tao’s attack, gritting her teeth against the pain.
Lesson learned: girls shouldn’t get love-brain. At best, it hurts your heart; at worst, it costs your life. Isn’t it better to just be fabulous alone?
After sitting for a while, Ning Shu knew she had to act. She couldn’t just wait to die. No matter how difficult the road ahead, hope existed as long as she didn’t give up.
Be brave, Ning Shu. Face the challenges!
Cheering herself on, Ning Shu spent two hours trekking through the enclosed valley, only to realize that no matter how hard she tried, it was useless.
The valley was completely sealed, there was no way out.
“Damn it! How can this be!”
She plopped down on a rock, frowning in frustration. Could it be that the Main God sent her here just to let her experience death all over again?
Ning Shu shook her head. That couldn’t be it. There had to be some detail she was overlooking.
Surely, the Main God wouldn’t put her in a dead-end situation without a way to get through it. That would be overestimating her.
Just as she racked her brain for answers, the system in her head spoke up.
“Host, have you forgotten about me, Chacha?” The voice sounded a little hurt.
A light bulb went off in Ning Shu’s mind. She slapped her thigh. “Right! How could I forget you!”
Since this was her personal system, it had to have a way to get her out of this place.
“Can you get me out? Like just now in the water—‘whoosh’—straight to the outside?”
She pointed at the towering mountains, her eyes full of hope.
Chacha replied, “Nope. That’s a power only the Main God has. You’re asking the impossible.”
Ning Shu’s eyes dimmed instantly. She pouted. “Then what good are you?”
Chacha: “…This host is so hard to deal with. One minute you’re sweet, the next you’re insulting me.”
[I can’t get you out directly, but I can point you in the right direction.]
“What direction? Don’t tell me some vague crap about ‘just keep trying and never give up.’ I don’t want to hear it.”
Not far from here, there is a cave containing a long-lost martial arts manual. If the host learns the techniques inside, escaping and taking revenge won’t be a problem.
A spark lit up in Ning Shu’s mind. She murmured, “So this is the legendary ‘falling off a cliff brings opportunity’? No grandfather in a ring, but a martial arts manual isn’t bad either.”
Following Chacha’s instructions, she made her way step by step toward the cave, taking a full hour to reach it.
Standing at the cave entrance, Ning Shu patted her tattered, mud-stained clothes and gritted her teeth. “This is your idea of ‘not far’?”
She had slogged through a dark, creepy forest, crossed two rivers, and twisted and turned along hidden paths to get here. And this garbage system calls it “not far”? Clearly, this is far!
Chacha, realizing it had no defense, changed the subject. “Once you find the manual, you can start training. When you reach level ten, you’ll find a way out.”
Ning Shu stepped into the cave. Darkness swallowed her; she couldn’t see her hand in front of her. Only the sound of water dripping echoed eerily.
She moved forward slowly. After a while, she saw a faint glimmer of light. Using her years of experience watching novels and dramas, she guessed the manual was there and made her way toward it.
The light was bright at first, but the closer she got, the dimmer it became. By the time she reached it, it was pitch black. Luckily, she had adapted to the darkness and spotted a small mound of earth.
She knelt and dug through the soil, revealing a rectangular object wrapped in cloth.
Ning Shu’s heart leapt. Just as she was about to unwrap it, a sudden cough made her drop the manual.
“Cough… cough… cough…”
The coughing sounded weak and painful.
Calming herself, Ning Shu cautiously asked, “Elder, do you need help?”
No reply. The coughing continued.
She picked up the manual and tucked it under her arm, starting to leave, but then she paused.
Though she wasn’t one to meddle, she couldn’t ignore someone in need. Besides, this strange old lady appearing here might be another test from the Main God.
She refilled a jar of water she had knocked over earlier and placed it with the small porcelain bottle she carried near the elder.
“This is my usual medicine for bl00d circulation and bruising. If you have these symptoms, take two pills. Though it’s soaked, it’s the only option in this environment.”
Ning Shu smiled wryly. This medicine had originally been prepared by the previous owner for Long Tao, but now she was playing the good Samaritan.
“If a man errs, he may be forgiven; if a woman errs, she cannot escape.”
The ancient saying did not deceive her.
After Ning Shu left, the cave fell silent. After a while, a hand emerged from beside the jar, moving it closer. Then, the medicine was taken.
The owner first glanced at the dusty jar with disdain, then drank the water despite its condition. The burning in her throat eased, and she breathed in the fresh air deeply; her suffering lessened.
She examined the plain porcelain bottle, popped the cork, and swallowed two pills.
Her dark, night-like eyes flicked with resolve, sharp as a blade.
No matter what, she would survive and make that greedy, heartless mother and daughter pay.
