- Chapter 29 - Working on Favor (1)
It was obvious that Fu Yun was angry, but she controlled the strength in her hands, so Ning Shu didn’t feel any pain.
Still, seeing her like this, Ning Shu couldn’t help but feel a bit scared, her thoughts tangled, leaving her speechless for a moment.
Fu Yun’s grip tightened slightly, and a shadow of an inscrutable smile appeared on her darkened face, making Ning Shu shiver.
She’s not going to… kill me, right?
Fu Yun’s expression was terrifying enough that Ning Shu quickly tried to explain herself.
“The palace maids can testify It was the princess who blocked me first.”
Fu Yun’s eyes flickered, narrowing slightly. “Oh, really?”
Ning Shu wanted to nod, but suddenly realized her neck was still held in Fu Yun’s hand. She hurriedly held up four fingers and swore, “It’s absolutely true! You’re the best in my heart, my lord no one compares to you!”
Fu Yun didn’t believe Ning Shu’s words entirely, but she couldn’t help feeling flattered. Slowly, she released her hand.
Ning Shu casually used a hairpin to tie her hair up, stray strands framing her face, adding a touch of gentleness to her look.
The carriage fell silent. Ning Shu dared not lean on Fu Yun, sitting stiffly beside her, enduring the discomfort of her position.
Yesterday, this unpredictable woman had pressed her down mercilessly; today, she was just sitting there silently, brooding. Her thoughts were more mysterious than the depths of the ocean.
Just as Ning Shu finished her silent complaints, the carriage jolted violently. She tumbled forward uncontrollably, and Fu Yun’s hands caught her just in time. Ning Shu ended up pressed against her chest.
The scent of Fu Yun enveloped her, comforting and calming. Ning Shu shifted slightly, finding a comfortable spot, poking the softness beside her, and couldn’t help but smile.
Fu Yun didn’t know why she cared about Ning Shu at all. A woman so reckless should probably be taught a lesson. She had expected Ning Shu to rise on her own, yet she not only stayed put but dared to fondle her.
“Still not getting up?”
Fu Yun’s voice was icy, but Ning Shu, no longer afraid, nuzzled into her embrace. Her voice was soft: “My back and legs ache… my lord, have pity on me.”
Fu Yun wanted to respond, but Ning Shu hugged her waist, relaxing entirely into her arms, letting most of her weight rest on her.
Fu Yun: “…”
She hadn’t calmed down yet.
This woman really assumed she wouldn’t retaliate?
Ning Shu didn’t care what Fu Yun thought; comfort was her top priority.
By the time they returned to the manor, it was already afternoon. Fu Yun didn’t even glance at Ning Shu, letting Leng Ying push her to the study.
Ning Shu had her own plans, so she didn’t bother Fu Yun. She made her way to her bridal quarters, running into Madam Li along the way.
“Your Highness, this is the prince’s residence. Your private quarters are next door; I’ll take you there.”
Ning Shu nodded and followed her.
She needed privacy to treat the poison in her body.
Although the people of the Chen Prince Manor, under Fu Yun’s orders, treated her indifferently, her living quarters were well-prepared a private courtyard with a pond and garden, nearly a miniature version of the entire manor.
Apart from the main bedroom, there were two side rooms, a storage area, and a small kitchen. Ning Shu was very satisfied, and even Madam Li seemed more appealing.
“Would you like some tea?” Ning Shu asked.
Madam Li looked momentarily surprised but gracefully declined.
Soon, a slightly older maid arrived with eight younger ones. She said politely, “Your Highness, these are the newly hired maids. Madam Li instructed me to let you select them first.”
The older maid carried herself with dignity and efficiency, making a good first impression. Ning Shu said, “All nine of you will stay.”
The older maid froze. “Ah?” Madam Li had only allowed the princess to keep two maids why keep all of them?
“Stop saying ‘ah.’ I find you competent. You will manage the household here. By the way, your name?”
“I am Zhe Liu.”
“Zhe Liu… what a fitting name,” Ning Shu complimented. “Go and assign them their duties. I have work to do—don’t disturb me unless it’s urgent.”
Ning Shu entered the main bedroom. Only then did she realize she was hungry. Two cups of tea were enough to tide her over. She set up her writing desk, unfurled a sheet of paper, and recalled the medicinal formula she had planned, then wrote it down.
Although the original owner had no reputation for talent or virtue, her skill in writing delicate, floral-style script was impeccable. Ning Shu admired the elegant handwriting. “Not only am I beautiful, I’m talented too. Fu Yun’s loss!”
Outside the window, someone almost laughed but quickly forced themselves to maintain composure.
Zhe Liu proved capable, promptly bringing lunch without waiting for instructions. Ning Shu appreciated such perceptiveness. Hungry as she was, she ate without concern for manners, while someone observing quietly slipped away.
Meanwhile, Fu Yun practiced her calligraphy in the study. Leng Qing pushed the door open silently like a shadow.
“Prince, during this hour, the princess showed no suspicious behavior.”
Fu Yun set down her brush, glanced up at her. Leng Qing continued, “She summoned a few maids, then went back to her room to write something resembling a medicinal formula, praising herself as beautiful and talented, and also” She stopped, unwilling to continue.
“What else?” Fu Yun’s tone was cold.
Leng Qing hesitated. “She also said… you have no taste.” She dared not mention the last three words.
“Hmph!” Fu Yun slammed her brush onto the inkstone, eyes flicking to the paper. “Let’s see when she slips up.”
On the pristine paper was a large character “Shu,” bold and sharp.
Fu Yun wasn’t patient by nature. If not for wanting to probe Ning Shu’s motives, she would have erased her at the first provocation. But after last night and today, she found herself somewhat intrigued.
This woman… is interesting.
