- Chapter 29 - Trying Hard to Win Favor (2)
Su Xiaoyue gave a gloating little smile and then stepped forward to grab Ning Shu’s hand. “Oh, Shu Shu, come on in! I’ve prepared so many of your favorite dishes.”
Ning Chan stood beside Su Xiaoyue, covering her mouth with a handkerchief, her lips curling in a mocking smile.
Just looking at Ning Shu this brainless girl how could she ever win the favor of Prince Chen?
Now that she had returned alone, once she went out tomorrow and spread the news, Ning Shu would become the laughingstock of the entire capital.
The thought alone made Ning Chan feel delighted.
Once inside, Ning Shu realized that the food she liked most was plain congee and pickled vegetables.
Ning Huaichang was already seated at the dining table. The table was laden with a lavish breakfast for everyone except for Ning Shu. In front of her was only a bowl of congee so clear it reflected her face, and a small plate of pickled radish that didn’t look very appealing.
“Eat up, child. Why be so polite? Treat this as your own home. Don’t be so formal,” Su Xiaoyue said with a kindly smile. If Ning Shu didn’t know her true nature, she might really believe Su Xiaoyue was a benevolent elder.
“Now that you’ve become Prince Chen’s wife, you must remember us. Don’t forget your family once you’ve flown up to the top,” Ning Chan added.
Ning Huaichang snorted dismissively. “Flown to the top? Do you even see that Prince Chen didn’t want to come with her? Pathetic!”
This reaction was exactly what Su Xiaoyue wanted. She suppressed her inner joy and said to Ning Huaichang, “The child hasn’t returned easily. Don’t scold her. Let’s eat.”
Ning Huaichang picked up his chopsticks, Su Xiaoyue and Ning Chan began eating, but Ning Shu hesitated, not touching her food.
Even the servants at Prince Chen’s mansion ate better than this. What did they take her for? Did they think she was still easy to bully like before?
“Aunt, this is what you prepared for me when I came back? You really do care for me,” Ning Shu said, stirring the congee with her chopsticks. The liquid was clear enough to reflect her face.
Su Xiaoyue’s expression stiffened. “You’ve always been frail. The doctor said you could only eat easily digestible food. That’s why I prepared congee for you. If you don’t like it, I can have the kitchen make something else.”
Ning Huaichang slammed the table, frowning. “Ning Shu, your mother has devoted herself to your health, and yet you doubt her intentions. Who taught you to be so ungrateful?”
Su Xiaoyue added for dramatic effect, dabbing at her nonexistent tears with her handkerchief. “Just a few days away, and even the way she addresses me has changed.”
“Apologize to your mother!”
Ning Shu looked at Ning Huaichang’s furious face and couldn’t help but snort, which only made him angrier.
“What are you laughing at?”
Ning Shu lifted a corner of her lips. “Nothing… I just think it’s… amusing. Su Xiaoyue, a mere concubine elevated to wife, has the nerve to demand I call her mother? My mother died in anger the moment you tried to make her an equal to your concubines!”
Ning Huaichang was enraged and raised his hand to strike her. Suddenly, a figure dashed inside and blocked his arm.
At the same time, Fu Yun’s cold and sharp voice came from the doorway.
“Lord Ning, what unforgivable crime has my princess committed that you trouble yourself to act?”
