- Chapter 4 - Sister, I’m Here
He didn’t speak, and Ning Shu couldn’t hold back any longer. Why drag her here for no reason and then act all mysterious? Absolutely insane!
“Hey, what do you want from me?”
The man in red snorted lightly, his expression still cold and detached. “Guess.”
Ning Shu: “…”
This wasn’t just crazy, this was borderline brain aneurysm territory.
Seeing Ning Shu remain silent, the red-clad man rose from his seat, hands behind his back, and floated in front of her. He inspected her from all sides before reaching out.
Ning Shu quickly stepped back as his hand neared her face and assumed a defensive stance. “What are you doing?!”
He didn’t answer, pursuing her relentlessly. Ning Shu had no choice but to fight back. Yet he barely paid her any mind, only defending, not attacking. After a dozen or so exchanges, she hadn’t even touched the edge of his robe.
While fending him off, she searched for an escape route. The hall was excessively spacious if she ran, she’d be caught in under ten seconds.
How had things ended up like this?
The man in red knocked her back and, with a faintly parted mouth, said, “Enough. I have other matters. No time to waste on you. Sit down I’ll transmit my martial technique to you.”
Ning Shu froze for a moment. He brought her here just to teach her martial arts? Could life really be this good?
Still cautious, she asked, “Why should I trust you?”
He extended his hand, and Ning Shu immediately felt an overwhelming force envelop her. As the pressure increased, she was helplessly drawn toward him.
Stopping less than an inch from his chest, he smirked, a trace of mockery in his expression. “Do you have a choice?”
Ning Shu raised her right hand defiantly and gave him the middle finger.
Nice martial arts, huh? Wait until I take my revenge I’ll find a way to sneak attack you, even if I can’t face you head-on.
He ignored her and lightly kicked her knee, making her sit. Then, palms to palms, he began channeling his internal energy into her.
Unable to resist, Ning Shu accepted it, carefully guiding the energy to prevent harm, since their techniques were different.
The process lasted a long time. Just as she feared, her body might explode, he finally stopped.
“Merge it properly. In time, my energy will be yours to use.”
He stood and left, his steps slightly unsteady, not as composed as before.
Ning Shu only glanced at him before pain surged through her body, her forehead throbbing sharply, stabbing like needles.
Could it be that the two internal energies were clashing, risking a backlash?
Her mind kept returning to the phrase “backlash of internal energy.” From a martial arts novice to a top-level expert this was like an overnight fortune. Nervousness was only natural.
Luckily, through careful guidance, the energies fused perfectly, and her pain subsided, except for the lingering ache in her forehead.
She slowly rose and looked around her eyes widened.
The hall wasn’t lit with candles but luminous pearls. The floor was not stone but white jade. Even the two chairs weren’t ordinary though she couldn’t tell the material, their heat alone marked them as extraordinary.
Her attention had been on the man in red, so she hadn’t noticed the lavish decorations.
Staring at the glowing pearls, her eyes narrowed. Not impressed.jpg
A soft “clang” broke the silence. Ning Shu turned to see a black-clad figure holding a fan Mo Shang.
During her day in the hot spring, the four of them had taken turns monitoring her, so she knew their names.
Girl, the Palace Master says you may leave.”
“Leave?”
Ning Shu was surprised. She had expected to be held captive, yet here he was letting her go so quickly.
“Yes. He said you have unfinished business. Staying in the palace won’t bring peace—finish what you must first… inherit the palace position.”
Mo Shang left the last few words unsaid, sensing Ning Shu’s reluctance to stay.
Pressing her still-throbbing forehead, Ning Shu thought the strange man had some understanding after all. Considering he had given her so much internal energy, she decided to forgive him.
“Then thank that… your Palace Master for me. We won’t meet in the martial world.”
She tried to leave, but Mo Shang blocked her with his fan. “Not ‘your Palace Master’ your master. By taking you in and imparting ten years of internal energy, he acknowledged you. Everyone in the martial world would kill for a chance to be his disciple, yet you won’t even call him master?”
Ning Shu shrugged. “I didn’t ask him to teach me. He insisted.”
Mo Shang raised an eyebrow, then sighed. “Ungrateful little thing! Fine, I’ll escort you out.”
Following Mo Shang through dark corridors and over several mountains, they finally reached the real exit. Ning Shu eyed the stone gate, thinking even a search dog might not find this place. Truly a fortress, easy to defend and easy to retreat from.
“I can only escort you this far. From here, it’s the path you took yesterday. Take care.”
“Thanks for bringing me out. Let’s part here.”
Mo Shang hesitated, concerned. “The Palace Master gave you ten years of energy. Your body is still weak. If a strong enemy attacks…”
“Relax. Aren’t there four of you here? Besides, your place is hidden no ordinary person can find it. I’ll be fine. I must go before dark or I won’t enter the city.”
Ning Shu cut him off, then dashed away after a flurry of words, leaving nothing behind.
Mo Shang watched, frustrated, muttering, “Did the Palace Master just find himself an ungrateful disciple?”
Ning Shu barely made it through the city gates before they closed. The capital was far more bustling than she imagined. She was captivated by the crowded streets and dazzling goods, gawking like a country bumpkin in the city.
But she remembered her mission, so she didn’t linger heading straight for the pawnshop.
She pawed a luminous pearl for some extra funds to eat, delighted.
The pawnshop owner studied it carefully, removing his glasses. “May I ask, where did you get this luminous pearl?”
Ning Shu, wary, snatched it back. “If you can pawn it, fine. If not, forget it. Do you want the egg or the chicken that laid it?”
The owner quickly said, “Yes, yes! Please name your price.”
Ning Shu thought for a moment, then boldly said, “One thousand taels. No haggling.”
The owner froze. Ning Shu hesitated, worried she’d asked too much, she didn’t know this world’s currency.
Before she could change her mind, the owner handed her two silver notes.
“This is two thousand taels. I’ll buy it outright. Is that acceptable?”
From her years of shopping experience, a quick agreement usually meant she was shortchanged but an extra thousand taels? Why not take it?
“Deal!”
She tucked the silver notes away and left. The owner examined the pearl in disbelief, feeling a strange familiarity.
Ning Shu, thrilled with her windfall, kicked a smooth stone in the street, murmuring, “Go, Pikachu!”
“Hey!”
A sharp, high-pitched voice came from ahead. Ning Shu looked up: a girl in a pale blue dress glared at her, flanked by four maids and six sword-wielding attendants.
“Miss, are you alright?” one maid asked, crouching to rub her knee.
“Do you think I’m fine after being hit by a giant stone? Move!”
The girl kicked her maid aside and strode toward Ning Shu, furious.
Ning Shu recognized her vaguely but couldn’t place her, so she activated the system.
Zhā zhā transmitted the information ah, this was Ning Ming, the second young mistress of the Ning family. Though not Ning Han’s full sibling, their tempers were alike: arrogant and insufferable.
A cold glint appeared in Ning Shu’s eyes. Her good mood for the night would be ruined by this woman.
“Blind, are you? You dare provoke me?!” Ning Ming shouted. Seeing Ning Shu’s face, her envy and bitterness flared. “Running around here at night you must be from a brothel!”
Ning Shu never showed mercy to people she disliked, especially foul-mouthed brats. She struck Ning Ming twice across the face.
Ning Ming shrieked, “You little… how dare you hit me!”
More slaps followed, Ning Shu smirking coldly. “I hit you. Done. Need a calendar for the day?”
Ning Ming held her swelling face, yelling to her attendants, “What are you standing there for? Cut off this little b1tch’s hands!”
Six swordsmen advanced. Ning Shu didn’t flinch, using a single move to knock them all down. Strong palm blasts sent them flying, and Ning Ming instinctively stepped back.
Arrogant though she was, she wasn’t stupid. She knew she couldn’t fight Ning Shu and hastily retreated with her maids.
Ning Shu only wanted to teach her a lesson, not kill her, she could still be useful.
A gentle breeze carried a scent of osmanthus, unseasonal but sweet. Ning Shu clapped her hands, smirking.
“Enough hiding come out now.”
From the shadowed alley behind, footsteps approached. A slender, graceful figure emerged.
Even against the fading light, Ning Shu could see her ethereal, untouchable beauty.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Elegant features, aloof aura just her type.
Li Xiao had been lying on the roof, ready to help if Ning Shu struggled. But seeing her handle it easily, she decided not.
