Chapter 12: Will You Come?
As the height of summer drew nearer, the weather in Yuncheng became increasingly unpredictable. It was sunny in the morning, but a heavy rain began in the afternoon.
Zheng Momo stepped away from her computer, stretched a long yawn by the window, and looked outside.
“Why did it suddenly start raining? I wonder if Miss Xi’s legs will hurt.”
Lately, Zheng Momo had seen Xi Congshuang’s patience and ability to stick to her training plan. She was preparing a new program for her. Leg training couldn’t be rushed, but there were fewer concerns about her healthy arms.
Moreover, Xi Congshuang had promised her that she would go to the hospital for a checkup again soon and would no longer avoid medical treatment.
Zheng Momo was almost moved to tears, unsure why Xi Congshuang had decided to turn her life around, but it was a good thing that she had.
Downstairs, in her room, Xi Congshuang, who had so moved Zheng Momo, finally woke up.
She was awakened by the sound of the rain, her arms lazy and her body relaxed.
Lying in bed and staring at the ceiling gave her a familiar feeling. Her brain was still foggy from sleep, and it took a while to remember what she had forgotten.
After a moment, Xi Congshuang finally remembered: it was raining outside. Did Cheng Zhishu take an umbrella with her today?
When the servants helped pack her room before, they cleared out Cheng Zhishu’s broken old umbrella. She wondered if the girl had remembered to grab a new one from the house before leaving.
In the dim room, the bedside lamp turned on.
A pale, slender arm reached out from under the covers for her phone. She pressed the screen to check the time. Xi Congshuang squinted, taking a moment to adjust to the screen’s brightness.
It was indeed time for Cheng Zhishu to get out of school. She casually closed the page and placed a voice call.
…
Holding the class late was a common teacher habit; being held late was the student’s destiny.
Anshi No. 1 High School was academically strict but didn’t forbid students from having cell phones. They just had to ensure the phones were off during class. If a student was caught playing with their phone during a lesson, they faced the combination punch of a parent-teacher meeting, a demerit, and a written self-reflection.
The teacher finally finished the “let’s just talk for five more minutes” that actually took ten minutes, a buy-one-get-one-free deal. The students breathed a collective sigh of relief, and the classroom buzzed back to life.
Cheng Zhishu had been sitting all afternoon. She stood up to pack her things, taking her phone out of her backpack to turn it on.
She pressed the power button and set the phone aside.
“It’s raining?”
“Did you bring an umbrella?”
Faced with the sudden rain, students sighed and groaned, asking around for anyone who had an umbrella and could give them a lift.
Cheng Zhishu heard her classmates’ discussion and instinctively fumbled in her backpack, only to remember that her umbrella was broken and she had been in a rush this morning, so she hadn’t taken a new one.
Her desk mate noticed her actions: “Didn’t bring an umbrella? I did. I’ll walk you to the subway entrance later.”
Cheng Zhishu: “I remember there’s a convenience store at the school gate. I can buy an umbrella on the way, so you won’t have to walk that far.”
“That works too, but many people probably didn’t bring umbrellas. I wonder if they’ll sell out.” Shangguan Yin rested her chin in her hand.
That was a possibility. Cheng Zhishu had no choice but to hope she’d be lucky enough to snag one that was left when she got there.
Shangguan Yin lived nearby, in a small community right behind the school, so she wasn’t in a hurry to pack up and go home.
She placed her pen between her lips, playing with it, and her voice buzzed: “Rain is so annoying. I hope the school gate isn’t flooded again. I just bought new shoes.”
“The school gate is on lower ground, so it does tend to flood. How about putting two plastic bags over your shoes like last time?” Cheng Zhishu said as she packed her bag. “I almost took the notes home. I forgot to lend them to you.”
Shangguan Yin’s eyes immediately lit up. She took the notebook with the plain cover: “Thanks, Academic Whiz Cheng.”
When Cheng Zhishu first transferred, no one wanted to socialize with her, and she sat alone at the back of the classroom.
Later, the class changed seats, and the two major “bodyguards” appeared on either side of the podium, displacing the original desk mate and taking the spot as her main “bodyguard.”
Seeing that Shangguan Yin had been behaving better lately, the teacher felt a little relieved. With a wave of his hand, he seated the student who ranked last with the transfer student. Since Cheng Zhishu didn’t seem to talk much, he figured a chatterbox could liven up the atmosphere.
The homeroom teacher had heard about the recent events. She only thought that Cheng Zhishu was still a child and couldn’t be responsible for ancient history. She was merely one of the victims.
Shangguan Yin was poor academically but talked a lot. Cheng Zhishu was just quiet, but she wouldn’t refuse kindness. After a few back-and-forths, the two became close.
As for the earlier rumors, Shangguan Yin had naturally heard many. She didn’t understand all the talk about usurpers and real/fake young misses. She only knew her desk mate was not only an academic whiz but also helped her with problems.
Her mom had also told her not to judge a person based on rumors. If you want to know if someone is good or not, just see for yourself.
As they were talking, her phone successfully booted up, and many notifications popped up.
Shangguan Yin added: “Actually, you don’t have to honestly turn off your phone as the teacher says. You can just turn on airplane mode. It’s much more convenient.”
She had only had the phone for a few days and wasn’t entirely familiar with all its functions, but Cheng Zhishu knew from a young age that not everything should be reported truthfully.
Cheng Zhishu said: “I forgot for a moment. Next time I’ll…”
She trailed off as she looked at her phone.
The phone’s screen was clean and hadn’t been used for long. The most frequent messages came from the network operator. She was accustomed to preparing to delete the spam messages when she saw several missed calls.
All of them were labeled “Sister.”
The last missed call was half an hour ago, and no more calls had been placed since.
There were also a few messages on WeChat. Cheng Zhishu clicked to view them.
[Snowflake]: It’s raining. Did you bring an umbrella?
[Snowflake]: I called you, but you didn’t answer.
[Snowflake]: The rain is getting heavier.
The last message was five minutes after the previous two. Cheng Zhishu didn’t know how to reply. She pulled down the notification bar, staring at the number she now knew by heart.
This number had been on the phone since the day she got it, presumably at Xi Congshuang’s instruction. The WeChat account was also added and silently pinned to the top by Cheng Zhishu.
She had added a few more people since, but none had displaced that single pinned contact.
After a long pause with no response, Shangguan Yin looked up strangely: “Next time you’ll what?”
Cheng Zhishu snapped back to reality. Her hovering finger subconsciously tapped the missed call notification and dialed back.
The call screen popped up. Just as Cheng Zhishu was about to hang up, the other side answered—almost instantly.
Cheng Zhishu didn’t realize her hand, holding the phone, was trembling slightly. Her heart pounded with tension, and her breathing slowed when the voice came through the phone. Her throat was tight: “Hello?”
Xi Congshuang glanced at the rain outside the window. She said to the person on the other end: “You didn’t answer when I called earlier. Has school not ended yet?”
Cheng Zhishu: “Yes, the teacher took a little longer to explain the problem, so I missed the call.”
Xi Congshuang’s tone relaxed slightly: “That’s good. Liu told me you didn’t take an umbrella when you left today. I’ll send someone to pick you up.”
“…”
Cheng Zhishu’s expression was blank. The last time someone had asked her with concern about not having an umbrella was in elementary school. It hadn’t happened again for all these years.
Xi Congshuang continued: “The person is already waiting at the school gate. I’ll send you the license plate number later.”
Cheng Zhishu: “Okay, then Sister Shuang, will you…” Come too?
Xi Congshuang: “What about me?”
The sound of rain was constant outside. The corridor was practically empty. Thinking about it, it didn’t seem possible.
It was already very kind of her to send someone to pick her up. She couldn’t ask for more. It was just that Cheng Zhishu suddenly wanted to see Xi Congshuang as soon as possible.
Cheng Zhishu shook her head into the phone: “It’s nothing. I’ll be down quickly.”
Xi Congshuang: “Okay, be careful on the way.”
“Okay.” With that reply, the call was ended. A moment later, the phone chimed with a message notification.
‘Snowflake sent a message’
She clicked on the message and saw the license plate number of the car coming to pick her up.
