Chapter 13: Go Home Together.
Cheng Zhishu usually had an excellent memory. She didn’t know what was wrong with her today; she had to stare at the message several times before she could commit the license plate number to memory.
A hand surreptitiously reached out to touch Cheng Zhishu’s forehead. Cheng Zhishu snapped back to reality and grabbed the wrist. She asked: “What are you doing?”
Shangguan Yin replied self-righteously: “I was about to ask you what’s wrong. Your face is so red. Are you running a fever?”
Cheng Zhishu released her wrist, stuffed the books on the desk into her bag randomly, and zipped it up: “I don’t have a fever. Someone is coming to pick me up.”
Shangguan Yin: “?”
So what if someone is picking you up? You don’t need to look that blissfully happy, do you?
The teaching building was still a distance from the school gate. Walking there in the rain would only leave them drenched. In the end, Shangguan Yin had to help, escorting her to the school entrance.
Shangguan Yin wasn’t as tall as Cheng Zhishu, so she let Cheng Zhishu hold the umbrella. She squinted and asked: “Where’s the car that’s picking you up? I don’t see it.”
Cheng Zhishu had good eyesight and immediately spotted the black car parked by the side of the road not far away. She pointed: “It’s over there.”
Shangguan Yin’s fleeting gaze immediately fixed on the direction Cheng Zhishu was pointing, and she let out a short, powerful: “No way!”
She already knew Cheng Zhishu was staying at the Xi family’s place. Everyone in Yuncheng was saying, What’s the point of raising a bastard’s burden, especially one that isn’t even biologically related? Isn’t that just charity work?
And this “charity” isn’t widely known. It won’t get on TV or the news, so there’s absolutely no benefit.
But Shangguan Yin didn’t expect the Xi family to be so dedicated to their charity, using a ten-million-yuan luxury car to pick someone up in the rain. How is this different from treating her like their own child?
In truth, Shangguan Yin didn’t know that it was vastly different from how they treated their own. At least Xi Wenyong’s son didn’t have this privilege, nor did his father.
The sleek black car was parked by the roadside. Its luxurious and elegant appearance instantly dwarfed the surrounding cars, which all parked a noticeable distance away.
Can’t compete, can’t afford to compensate, so we’ll just keep our distance.
Thus, a clear vacuum formed around the black car, making it easy for Cheng Zhishu to identify.
Cheng Zhishu focused only on the license plate: “Let’s go. I’ll give you back the umbrella once I get in the car.”
She didn’t know or care about luxury cars. Having lived in the Xi mansion for a while, she had become numb to them, feeling they had nothing to do with her and were just fleeting vanity.
“Okay.” Shangguan Yin followed Cheng Zhishu like a lost soul.
Frankly, there was a difference between second-generation rich kids. Her family could afford this car, but there was no need. It certainly wouldn’t be used as a simple student shuttle like the Xi family did.
The two carefully maneuvered around the puddles in front of the school gate and walked toward the car. Cheng Zhishu’s shoulder was bumped by someone. She momentarily lost her footing and bumped into Shangguan Yin.
Shangguan Yin frowned at the culprit, recognizing a student from the next class, and said unhappily: “The road is wide enough. Don’t you have eyes?”
The other person rolled their eyes and continued walking away.
Shangguan Yin, being a young lady, let out a ‘heh’ and was about to curse when she saw the girl walk toward the convenience store where several people were sitting or standing.
These few students hadn’t rushed to leave school after classes. They were talking to the person in the middle.
The person surrounded in the middle was Wen Yan, the real young miss in the true/fake young miss saga. She was looking in their direction.
Cheng Zhishu clearly saw her, too. It was difficult to make out the young face through the rain curtain, but her mind flashed back to their first meeting at the Wencan Building.
The documents that had been thrown were picked up by Cheng Zhishu. With trembling hands, she confusedly followed downstairs and saw the girl being led by the woman in the black suit, looking dazed and innocent.
She was wearing the familiar school uniform, and she had a pair of round eyes almost identical to Wang Ya’s, and a naturally upturned mouth, suggesting she was lively and loved to smile.
Most noticeably, her nose was the exact small Roman nose of Xi Wenyong. This was a world of difference from Cheng Zhishu, whose features bore no resemblance to Xi Wenyong or Wang Ya.
Feeling a sudden emptiness in her heart, Cheng Zhishu turned to look at the decorative mirror beside her. The mirror reflected a face with distinct features: eyes that were narrow on the inside and wide on the outside, with upturned corners and deep, clear double eyelids. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t find any resemblance to her adoptive parents.
Anyone standing next to them would know who the family was. At that moment, Cheng Zhishu suddenly understood why her adoptive parents were so insistent on regaining custody of her.
To Wang Ya, the Wen Yan standing before her was a living example proving her “innocence.”
To Xi Wenyong, the honor student from Anshi No. 1 High School brought immense pride. They were both desperately shedding their mediocre, reluctant past, eager to abandon their broken promises.
Her gaze then shifted, indifferent, her eyes revealing no discernible emotion: “The rain is getting heavier. Let’s go.”
Shangguan Yin looked at the group like they were lunatics, muttering under her breath: “What’s wrong with them? They almost made me step in dirty water.”
Just as the two were about to leave, several raised voices came from the nearby convenience store.
“You wouldn’t understand. Some people are just shameless.”
“I’m not saying anything, but if it were me, I’d be too embarrassed to be here. I’d just drop out.”
“Well, that’s why you’re you and she’s her, right?”
The discussions grew louder. Passing students, confused, looked in their direction, their gazes like needles.
Wen Yan felt uncomfortable. She whispered something, looking troubled, and tried to leave when she couldn’t reason with them, but another person pressed her down to sit.
The voice grew even louder: “Wen Yan, don’t be so nice. Softies only get bullied.”
“Exactly! It’s your parents, and you’re the real Miss Xi. How dare she be an interloper?”
“Maybe she’s a thief, stealing parents, stealing identity—she steals everything.”
“The homeroom teacher in the next class even said she could outscore you. What a joke. The school she used to go to was horrible, my friend said. The quality is nothing like our No. 1 High School.”
“Wen Yan has been first place since she enrolled, okay? Her homeroom teacher is desperate to surpass ours. That’s just bragging.”
“So funny, ha-ha-ha…”
The laughter abruptly ceased. The driver’s side door of the black car by the road opened. A black umbrella unfurled in the rain. The driver walked around the front of the car toward the back door, and the car window rolled down, revealing the person in the back seat.
The person’s features were exquisite and gorgeous. Her long hair was braided to one side. When her deep black eyes looked out, the world instantly fell silent.
Only the shush of the rain could be heard.
The driver, dressed in a well-tailored suit, bent down to hear what the person said, then walked toward Cheng Zhishu, holding the umbrella.
Xi Congshuang asked from inside the car: “Why are you standing there? Get in the car and come home for dinner.”
Simultaneously, the driver stopped in front of the two girls. The wide umbrella easily covered both of them.
The driver held out his empty side: “Miss Cheng, the Miss asked me to escort you to the car.”
“…” Cheng Zhishu did not look at the driver holding the umbrella. Her gaze went past him, focusing on the person sitting in the car.
In truth, it wasn’t that she didn’t care what others said. It was just that caring wouldn’t change anything. The facts wouldn’t change.
Perhaps deep down, she also felt those people weren’t wrong. She was an interloper, and her very existence was a mistake.
But to completely let go of the present, to retreat like a street rat, she couldn’t accept it.
“Oh my god, this display…” Shangguan Yin had no time for her desk mate’s melancholy. She only thought, The Xi family is truly saintly to this extent. The treatment they give to an adopted daughter is the same as to a legitimate young miss! Her own family’s Rolls-Royce was only brought out for business talks or formal banquets, maximizing its use and emphasizing thrift.
Saintly here was meant as a compliment: having great love and treating everyone equally. Could the Xi family motto be that whether the child is biological or not, they are all children of the Xi family?
Xi Congshuang waved at her: “Come over. We’re going home.”
