The Female Supporting Character Just Wants to Farm [Transmigration] - Chapter 10
After parting ways with Gao Chun at the Fengyue Pavilion, Gao Luoshen didn’t return home with her. Instead, she led the terrified Fangze on a stroll through the streets, glancing at cosmetics on one stall and running to another selling clay figurines and sugar paintings, her face full of curiosity.
“Y-young master, aren’t you afraid that Meng Wanzhou will come back for revenge?” Fangze’s eyelids twitched violently. Those Imperial College students weren’t to be messed with. She had heard that their words were so powerful, even the Emperor was a little helpless against them, and their spittle alone could drown someone. Today, her young mistress had publicly disgraced Meng Wanzhou. What if he came back for revenge?
Gao Luoshen glanced at Fangze and gave a mysterious smile. “He wouldn’t dare!” Meng Wanzhou was a proud man who cared a lot about his reputation. After this blow, he probably wouldn’t dare show his face in public for a while. He would only be a target for others’ criticism; no one would side with him. However, knowing his personality, he would definitely find a way to save face, perhaps by bringing his mother, wife, and daughter to the capital first, and then finding a way to get rid of his long-suffering wife once he became successful.
Fangze had no choice but to relax after hearing her mistress’s command. After walking a few steps behind Gao Luoshen, she gasped again, her voice sharp. “That’s the second son of the Marquis of Mingyuan!” She had heard that he loved to cause trouble for her young mistress.
“What’s there to be afraid of?” Gao Luoshen pulled down Fangze’s hand, which was pointing ahead, and whispered, “We’re in disguise. It would be a miracle if that brainless Xie Yucheng recognized us.”
“But didn’t Third Miss recognize you?” Fangze mumbled softly.
Gao Luoshen was momentarily speechless. After a while, she said, “Can that good-for-nothing Xie Yucheng be compared to Gao Chun?” One was a good-for-nothing among good-for-nothings, always doing despicable things. The other was a favored daughter of Heaven, a future Empress. How could they be compared? Gao Luoshen tilted her head up, her eyes landing on Xie Yucheng. He had two young servants behind him, who were being angrily scolded by him. Glancing to the side, she saw the words “Cockfighting Arena” and knew that Xie Yucheng had lost his match.
The good-for-nothings of this dynasty did nothing but cockfighting, horse racing, listening to music, and other pretentious things like drinking games. This cockfighting arena was located on a busy street, and many young masters frequented it. Even her own older brother, Gao Luochuan, had gone a few times. To the right of the arena was a flashy gambling house, and its banner swayed in the wind as if inviting gullible fools to come in.
Gao Luoshen had only seen descriptions of cockfighting in books. Passing by the arena, she really wanted to see one for herself. She made up her mind, ignored Fangze’s worried expression, and walked toward the arena. Fangze couldn’t convince her otherwise, so she just covered her mouth and looked around with fear.
The cockfighting arena was very spacious, with nine different pits arranged in the shape of a trigram. The one in the center was the largest, with the most spectators and the highest bets. In a remote corner of the arena, some people were squatting, selling the roosters they had raised. Usually, a person who loved cockfighting would never be willing to sell their own rooster, but they were forced to pawn their “treasures” when they had lost all their money. Gao Luoshen walked around the arena and saw at least ten people trying to sell their “precious roosters.”
“Which one do you think is the most magnificent?” Gao Luoshen turned and asked excitedly.
Fangze looked bewildered. After a moment, she said with difficulty, “Young Master, are you going to buy one?”
“Yes,” Gao Luoshen chuckled. In the short time they were talking, she had already found a rooster she liked. The rooster’s owner was sitting in a corner, unlike the others who were shouting and trying to sell their birds. He just sat there with his head down, looking incredibly reluctant. He gently stroked his rooster, as if he was about to go through a heartbreaking separation. “That one,” Gao Luoshen decided. She quickly walked over to the man and, after much convincing, bought the dejected-looking rooster.
“Young Master, everyone else’s are so proud and majestic, but yours looks so pathetic,” Fangze said. She didn’t understand these things, but after seeing the fierce roosters fighting in the pit, she felt anxious.
“Let’s take it back and raise it for a while,” Gao Luoshen said with a faint smile. “I’ll name it ‘Imperial Student’.” Thinking about the cheers of “Go, Imperial Student, go!” and “Imperial Student, peck at it!” a wide smile spread across Gao Luoshen’s face. Most Imperial College students in the dynasty liked to debate, but they never did anything. They only used their words to criticize and mock others. They should just go and commit suicide by giving a scathing memorial to the Emperor. Their talk was just cheap; they were completely contemptible.
When Gao Luoshen was carrying “Imperial Student” back, she ran into Qi Wei and Gao Luochuan leaving the estate. Gao Luochuan, being her older brother, knew her nature well. Seeing her in this disguise, he was immediately annoyed. “Nonsense!” he shouted. He then frowned. “The estate has people to buy these fowls. Why are you carrying that?”
“This is an Imperial Student,” Gao Luoshen said, not caring about his grim expression. She waved her hand. “It cost me hundreds of taels of silver.”
Gao Luochuan’s expression became even more unreadable. He lowered his voice. “You went to the cockfighting arena?”
“Yes,” Gao Luoshen said.
Gao Luochuan was so angry at her indifferent attitude that his hand, which was pointing at her, kept trembling. After a long moment, he flicked his sleeve and scolded, “What lady acts so recklessly? The selection for the Prince of Qin’s Consort is coming up soon. You’d better watch yourself!”
Gao Luoshen hated Gao Luochuan’s condescending tone. She rolled her eyes and said, “If you like the Prince of Qin so much, why don’t you marry him yourself? There are plenty of homosexuals in this dynasty. Didn’t you also keep a young servant? You’d better work hard at the Prince of Qin’s palace. You know, people should learn to enjoy themselves and not drift aimlessly like a falling leaf.”
Upon hearing Gao Luoshen’s nonsense, Gao Luochuan’s hand shot up. But Gao Luoshen was not a person to sit still. Before his hand could land, she kicked him and said with a smile, “Big Brother, you have a bug on you.” She didn’t wait for his response and hummed a tune as she twisted her way back into the estate.
Qi Wei stared at the scene, dumbfounded. After a long moment, he came back to his senses and looked at Gao Luochuan with concern. He was so angry his face was green, and he looked like he was about to faint. “Your cousin’s personality…”
Gao Luochuan clenched his fists, his teeth grinding. “I’ll deal with her one day!” he said hatefully.
On the other end, Gao Luoshen happily returned to her courtyard, gave “Imperial Student” to a servant to take care of, and sat on a chair under a tree to sunbathe. Fangze was still shaken by her previous actions. After a while, she stammered, “That… that was the heir. The… the future master of the Duke’s Estate.”
Gao Luoshen narrowed her eyes and scoffed. “So what? We don’t rely on him to live.”
Fangze frowned upon hearing this, feeling that her mistress’s words made some sense. When her mistress got married, she would ask to be taken along. The Duke’s Estate was her maternal home; she didn’t need to look at their faces. Fangze’s heart felt a little lighter, but before a smile could appear on her face, she heard her mistress speak again. “Fangze, who do you think is suitable to be the Prince of Qin’s Consort?”
“This, this…” Fangze stammered for a moment, then said flatteringly, “Of course it’s you, my lady.” She had never seen princes or noble descendants, but she had heard from the people in the capital that those princes were always magnificent and as beautiful as gods.
Gao Luoshen scoffed. “I think Su Mingjing is more suitable.”
Su Mingjing? Wasn’t that the young lady from the Su family? She had heard that she and her mistress didn’t get along. Was this sarcasm, or something else? Fangze looked confused.
Gao Luoshen suddenly stood up, patted Fangze’s head, and said earnestly, “Just remember, no matter their background, many men in this world are as vulgar and shameless as Meng Wanzhou. Your mistress just wants to get rich and reach the pinnacle of life with her own hands.” Of course, it would be best if I could get a ‘Death-Immunity’ token from Gao Chun. Gao Luoshen added silently in her mind.
Fangze nodded, though she didn’t quite understand.
On the other side, Shua Hua rushed back and vividly recounted the ridiculous scene between the Gao siblings at the front gate.
Gao Chun was in her room painting. When she heard the words “Imperial Student,” the wolf hair brush in her hand trembled, and a drop of ink instantly smudged the rice paper.
“Yes, Ah Da also said that when the Second Miss left the arena, she said out loud that after the Pearl Banquet, everyone should come and see the ‘Imperial Student’s’ performance.” Shua Hua’s eyes were sparkling.
Gao Chun shook her head and chuckled. Was she holding a grudge against the Imperial College students because of Meng Wanzhou’s shameless actions? She suddenly remembered something. She took a letter from her sleeve, wrote the word “No,” and handed it to Shua Hua, telling her to find an opportunity to send it.
