- Chapter 11 - Good Boy - First Day on the Job, The Husband-in-Law Gene Awakens...
Shen Ji’s cooking was quite decent. She followed the recipes and had some prior experience herself.
A princess raised in the cold palace was different from others. It was common for maids to bring cold, spoiled food. The little Shen Ji couldn’t afford to get sick because no one would call a royal doctor for her.
So she would often secretly disguise herself as a maid and sneak into the royal kitchen at night to steal ingredients. She would then teach herself how to start a fire in a small kitchen to make herself a hot meal.
Whether it tasted good was secondary; the important thing was to have fresh, hot food so she wouldn’t get sick.
She survived like that for several years until she got a bit older, left the palace, and had her own residence. For better or worse, it was a place where she could make her own decisions, and she finally had a good life.
Having been in this world for only two short days, she had adapted so quickly and without much harm, largely because of her past experiences.
She wasn’t very familiar with the gas stove, and she had never seen some of the seasonings before. The finished dishes looked good, but the taste was only mediocre. Fortunately, her wife was very supportive and gave her a thumbs up with every bite.
“You’re amazing~”
Yu Chiyin meant it.
She was a foodie herself but couldn’t cook. If she tried to, she’d blow up the kitchen. So Yu Chiyin had equal admiration for everyone who could cook. Plus, she was easy to please and not a picky eater, especially since this meal was one Shen Ji had spent a lot of time on.
The little husband was humble.
“It’s not good enough yet. I’ll make it better in the future.”
Yu Chiyin’s eyes lit up, then she sighed with a hint of regret.
“It’s a shame I’m starting a new filming project in a few days. Even if you get better at cooking, I won’t get to eat it.”
“Filming project?”
Shen Ji swallowed a mouthful of rice. She had never heard that term before. It sounded like she was going to be thrown in jail.
“Yup.”
Yu Chiyin liked sweet and sour flavors, so she took a few extra bites of the sweet and sour pork. Shen Ji immediately pushed the whole plate in front of her. Yu Chiyin smiled shyly and said, “Thank you.”
She then explained to Shen Ji,
“It means joining a film crew to shoot a movie.”
She then realized that Shen Ji didn’t even know this? Was the little illiterate living offline?
Speaking of being offline, Yu Chiyin felt a little guilty. Did Shen Ji not know that she was creating a storm online and ruining her reputation?
Well, it’s not like the little useless person has a good reputation anyway, Yu Chiyin thought, straightening her back. Right, she’s already a notorious playgirl from City A, so what reputation is there to ruin?
“Mmm~”
Shen Ji picked up some greens and put them in her bowl.
“You have to eat everything. Don’t be a picky eater.”
Yu Chiyin grimaced. She wasn’t a picky eater; she just ate more of what she loved, ate her favorites first, and saved what she didn’t like for last. She didn’t like vegetables. When she started filming, she’d be eating leafy greens every day. No celebrity genuinely loves vegetables.
Seeing that Yu Chiyin, though reluctant, was obediently eating her vegetables, Shen Ji nodded in satisfaction, feeling a bit like she was raising a daughter. Luckily, the little husband-in-law didn’t yet know there was a term for “girlfriend-raising” in this world.
“When you start filming, can’t I come with you?”
She tilted her head, confused.
“I can cook for you.”
As a husband-in-law, it should be fine to be by your wife’s side, right? What kind of terrifying place is a film set that a legally married spouse can’t even stay close by?
Shen Ji once again suspected that Yu Chiyin had committed a crime and was being sent to a prison.
Her expression suddenly turned serious. She asked,
“Did you do something wrong? Is that why you’re being locked up on a film set?”
“???”
Yu Chiyin was happily eating a piece of pineapple and a piece of sweet and sour pork and clearly didn’t expect Shen Ji to ask such a brain-numbing question.
She answered with a hint of hesitation.
“I… maybe my first mistake was getting into this industry?”
Then, she nodded in all seriousness, confirming her own thoughts. She said indignantly, “Exactly. I should have just stayed home and been a useless rich second-generation instead.”
Yu Baichuan wasn’t particularly kind to her, but he wasn’t awful either. As the wealthiest man in Hucheng, Yu Chiyin could live a comfortable life even if she did nothing. Moreover, the Jiang family was not far behind. Her mother remarried after divorcing Yu Baichuan and was never stingy with Yu Chiyin.
“So, can I come with you? I can cook for you.”
The little husband-in-law was actually a little worried. After all, she had just started her job. What if Yu Chiyin found a new husband-in-law on the set? Would she, the dignified King of Changyuan, have to share a wife with someone else?
Her mind wandered, but she remained calm and collected. As someone who had been a king, she was used to big situations and wouldn’t panic over this.
Yu Chiyin didn’t know what she was thinking. She poked her chin and thought for a moment.
“Sure. We’re legally married, after all.”
She was secretly thinking that she’d take Shen Ji out for a walk every day on set, just to infuriate Yu Baichuan. The little husband was satisfied and put a few more pieces of vegetables into her wife’s bowl as a reward.
“…”
Yu Chiyin finally finished the vegetables in her bowl with a pained expression. She was afraid Shen Ji would give her more, so she shielded her bowl and said,
“No more vegetables. I’m full.”
“No more, then have some soup.”
Shen Ji chuckled, taking the bowl to ladle some soup for her.
On their first day of marriage, they sat down and had a decent meal together. After dinner, Shen Ji cleared the table and went to the kitchen to figure out how to use the dishwasher.
Yu Chiyin was in a daze, watching the person in the kitchen. She felt a strange sense of home.
She murmured softly,
“So, a marriage without love isn’t always terrible.”
When Shen Ji had figured out how to use the dishwasher, she washed her hands and came out. Yu Chiyin was no longer in the living room. She could hear voices faintly from the study, so Yu Chiyin was probably on the phone.
Upholding her principle of serving her wife in every way, the little husband-in-law went to the master bedroom and started to fill the bathtub with hot water.
When the water was ready, Shen Ji, following what she had learned, threw in a bath bomb. What a shame I didn’t get rose petals, she thought. I should have bought a bouquet earlier.
The little husband-in-law secretly made a note in her memo app on how to better serve her wife.
After doing all this, she estimated the time was about right. She left the bedroom and stopped outside the study door for a moment. Hearing no sound, she raised her hand and knocked.
“What is it?”
Yu Chiyin’s voice came from inside. Through the door, without seeing her expression, Shen Ji thought her tone sounded cold, as if she were unhappy.
The little husband-in-law wasn’t sure. She pursed her lips and said,
“The hot water is ready for you. Would you like a bath?”
Yu Chiyin didn’t reply, but Shen Ji heard the sound of slippers shuffling. She had good hearing and could tell the footsteps were approaching the door. She took two steps back.
The door opened. Yu Chiyin’s expression was calm, and the smile she usually had on her face was gone. Shen Ji was now certain that the phone call had upset her.
They looked at each other in silence. Shen Ji maintained a smile, completely unaffected by the coldness radiating from her wife. She repeated,
“The hot water is ready. Would you like to bathe now, wife?”
“Okay.”
Yu Chiyin nodded. As she turned, her clothes brushed against Shen Ji’s. She then entered the master bedroom.
Shen Ji waited in the living room. After all, the bathroom door was a transparent frosted glass door. While she wouldn’t do anything to her wife on her own accord, not looking at something inappropriate was a rule of etiquette etched in the little king’s bl00d.
It was then that she took the time to study the apps on her phone. She noticed an app with a big eye icon. The most noticeable thing was the red notification icon on the top right corner, which had stacked to 999+.
Shen Ji also glanced at the green bubble messaging app, which also had 999+ notifications. She was confused. Just yesterday, the apps on her phone had been quiet, with only one unread message from the landlord urging her to pay rent.
The little husband-in-law decided to open the “Big Eye” app first. She didn’t know the former owner’s social circle, but in her few memories, there were always beautiful young women by her side. She was afraid she wouldn’t be able to handle it.
The moment she clicked on the app, countless notifications began to sound. The phone vibrated wildly. The little king’s eyes widened, just like the app’s icon.
She threw the phone aside, letting it buzz for about ten minutes. When the noise completely stopped, she picked it up again.
Everything was in a language she didn’t understand, but she saw Yu Chiyin’s name. Her husband-in-law’s instincts made her click on it.
The first notification was a system message:
******
@YuChiyin has followed you.
******
Then came countless likes, comments, and private messages from strangers. There were too many to look through one by one, so Shen Ji gave up and first went to Yu Chiyin’s profile to follow her back.
She scrolled down and saw Yu Chiyin’s two latest posts.
******
[@YuChiyin]: “Yes, I’m married. My wife is @ShenXiaoji.” [MarriageCertificate.JPG] [IntimatePhoto.JPG]
[@YuChiyin]: “She won’t let me have ice cream, and she demanded a kiss before making dinner!!”
******
“…”
Shen Ji smiled. It looked like something posted on a royal notice board in the imperial city for all the people to see.
But the royal notice boards usually only had serious matters on them. Shen Ji wondered, What would the people think if I posted my complaints on the royal notice board back in Changyuan? Would they react like the people under these two posts?
The thought made her laugh. The King of Changyuan had so many things to complain about every day, like a minister who would ask if she had eaten, slept, or was in a good mood, and another who would write a ton of useless words that could be summed up in four: “nothing important.”
The little husband-in-law thought that since her wife had already made her stance clear and she had seen it, she should also respond.
******
[@ShenXiaoji]: “That’s right, she’s my wife. //@YuChiyin: Yes, I’m married…”
******
As for the second post that fabricated a story about her not letting Yu Chiyin have ice cream, Shen Ji didn’t pay attention to the comments cursing her for being a stingy freeloader. She just thought the post was adorable.
What Shen Ji meant was that the imagined tone was cute, just as cute as when Yu Chiyin was lying on the couch, hopelessly complaining,
“Why do people have to work?”
She decided to leave a comment.
After Yu Chiyin’s bath, the internet went crazy again. The trending topics hadn’t stopped all day. This was the terrifying traffic of a triple-award-winning actress. She wasn’t a “traffic star” but had more topics for discussion than all of them combined.
The “Big Eye” app’s engineers, who had been working overtime all day, pushed up their glasses, drank a large cup of strong black coffee, and stabilized the server. The app didn’t crash again.
They wore a smile, their deeds unseen.
Yu Chiyin was watching a cartoon on her tablet, with a clump of bubbles on her head, pretending to be the prettiest actress sheep on the cartoon grassland.
A notification popped up, interrupting the actress who had become a three-year-old Yu Chiyin. She clicked on the notification, ready to punish the person who had tagged her at an inconvenient time.
When she clicked on it, she found that Shen Ji had followed her back, reposted her tweet, and left a comment under her most recent post.
[@ShenXiaoji]: “I was wrong. I shouldn’t be a husband-in-law whose mind is only on getting a kiss from my wife. I’ll go buy my wife some ice cream now.”
Yu Chiyin was stunned. She mumbled,
“The little illiterate has a good sense of humor.”
“Husband-in-law?” Is that the little illiterate’s new persona?
Before she could think it through, the little illiterate sent her a message.
******
[Little Illiterate]: [Image] [Image] [Image]
[Little Illiterate]: “Wife, which one do you want?”
[Little Illiterate]: “Or do you want all of them?”
******
Yu Chiyin’s mood instantly brightened. She decided to forgive the little illiterate for interrupting her happy time pretending to be the prettiest actress sheep on the cartoon grassland. She began tapping on her phone screen.
A “ding dong” sounded, and Shen Ji opened the message box.
******
[My Wife]: [Image] [Image] [Image]
[My Wife]: “I want all the ones I’ve circled!”
[My Wife]: “And bring me a few bags of potato chips, only the original flavor.”
[Little Illiterate]: “Okay, wife.”
******
So, before doing her skincare routine after her bath, Yu Chiyin conveniently changed Shen Ji’s contact name.
