- Chapter 26 - The Promise - I'm Almost Becoming a "Lovesick Fool," But First, Let's Eat…
Due to the wives’ plan to dine and dash, the show’s staff had to quickly come up with a few challenges for them.
The director knew Yu Chiyin wasn’t just forgetting she had a microphone on. She was loudly plotting to show him that if he didn’t give them more money, they would take the groceries and run, leaving the staff to deal with the mess.
The wives were having a little spat. It was all one-sided, though, with Yu Chiyin being upset because her little wife had a secret stash of money.
Shen Ji was helpless. She didn’t think of it as a secret stash. She had just been smart and put 1,000 yuan in her suitcase. Before the show, she had done her research and knew that many shows take away contestants’ phones and money. So, she was just being prepared.
“Wife, don’t be mad,” Shen Ji said, not caring about the camera. She pulled a 1,000 yuan bill from her pants pocket and handed it to Yu Chiyin.
Even though Yu Chiyin was angry and pretended not to care, she quickly took the money and put it in her pocket.
“Don’t think I’ll forgive you just because you handed it over!”
“We’ve only been married for two months, and you’re already hiding money! It’s 1,000 yuan now, but who knows if it’ll be 10 million later!”
“… ”
Shen Ji wanted to argue that she only made 500,000 yuan a month, so she’d have to save for two years to get 10 million.
But her “wife” instinct told her to shut up. She couldn’t add fuel to the fire. She quietly reminded herself that this was not only her wife but also her sugar mommy, and she had to be a good boy and treat her well.
So Shen Ji pointed to a bag of chips on the shelf. “We have money now. Want me to get you some chips, wife?” It was a question, but she didn’t wait for an answer. She reached out and put two bags in the cart.
Yu Chiyin huffed. “You just want to eat them yourself.”
Shen Ji understood immediately. She gave an “OK” sign and grabbed two more bags.
“I want to eat four bags of chips. Is that right?” she said to herself, as if confirming her own thoughts.
They continued shopping, with plenty of money now. They completely forgot about the challenges the show’s staff had planned. The staff member was chasing them with the task cards.
The staff couldn’t show up on camera, so they just whispered, “Ms. Yu, Ms. Shen, the task cards…”
The wives didn’t need money for the moment, so they just ignored them and laughed as they put things in their cart. They were very uncooperative, probably still mad that the show had originally only given them 100 yuan.
The viewers were all laughing at the director’s failed plan. But when they got to the seafood section, Shen Ji saw Yu Chiyin’s eyes light up. She looked at the price and stopped immediately.
“Give them to me.” Shen Ji held out her hand, and the staff member behind her didn’t know what she meant. Shen Ji pointed to the task cards in the staff member’s hand. “Give them to me,” she repeated.
Yu Chiyin didn’t pay attention. She was too busy looking at a very active lobster, looking like a little greedy cat. The viewers in the comments were all laughing.

[Shen Ji immediately knew her wife was craving something.]
[The task card: You ignored me before, but now you can’t live without me.]
[I’ve been reincarnated as a task card, and I’ll show everyone that I’m not a regular task card, but a famous actress’s food card.]

A hashtag #The Past and Present of a Task Card went viral. The viewers were having a blast editing pictures and making jokes. The contrast in Shen Ji’s attitude was hilarious. One second she was pretending the task cards didn’t exist, and the next, she was turning around and reaching for them.
“Oh, right, Ms. Shen,” the staff member said, handing her all of the task cards.
Shen Ji looked at the lobster’s price, then at the rewards on the task cards. She chose three cards and gave the rest back. She kept seven in her hand.
The tasks were made up on the spot, so they weren’t too difficult. Most of them were quizzes and riddles. The first card was easy for Shen Ji. The task was to name all the movies and TV shows Yu Chiyin had been in, including the titles, genres, and her character’s names.
She would get 30 yuan for each correct answer and a bonus 200 yuan if she named more than ten. Shen Ji held the card with her index and middle fingers. “If I get all of them right, is there an extra reward?”
The show’s staff was surprised. Yu Chiyin has been in more than twenty movies and TV shows. Was Shen Ji saying she knew all of them? If she could, it meant she had watched them all, and probably more than once.
There would be a lot of publicity for the show. If Shen Ji could remember everything, it would show how much she loved Yu Chiyin. The staff had no idea that Shen Ji had a photographic memory and had only watched each movie once.
The staff member discussed it with the director and gave a new answer.
“If you can get them all right, we’ll give you a bonus of 300 yuan.”
Shen Ji nodded and started listing the movies from memory, from “Yan Wen” in “Listening to the Wind” to “Xie Jinqiao” in The Story of Yan Shui, which was still being filmed. She even named two movies that hadn’t been released yet.
As she spoke, the staff and viewers looked it up to confirm. Everything matched. Shen Ji wasn’t making it up. Even Yu Chiyin’s ten-year fans admitted that they probably didn’t know as much as Shen Ji.
Yu Chiyin saw that Shen Ji was staring at her the whole time, and she started to wonder if this was all a new trick from the “bad girl.” She was thinking, If I fall for this, I can’t be blamed for being a lovesick fool, right?
It was hard for anyone to resist Shen Ji when she acted like that. The staff member was speechless and handed Shen Ji the reward.
“Ms. Shen, you’re amazing. Your love for Ms. Yu is so enviable.”
“Thank you.” Shen Ji always had a calm attitude with others. She took another task card. “Let’s keep going,” she said.
Not surprisingly, Shen Ji aced every challenge, and the show’s staff had to spend a lot of money. But Shen Ji knew when to stop. She went to Yu Chiyin and used the net to pick up the active lobster. She turned to her and asked,
“Do you want this?”
“Mhm! I want it!” The lovesick fool became a foodie instantly. Her eyes lit up as she looked at the big lobster. She happily started ordering: “I want it grilled, steamed, and with cheese!”
Shen Ji had never cooked lobster before, but she knew how to cook it based on Yu Chiyin’s requests. She nodded and asked,
“Is there anything else you want to eat?”
They had enough money, so Shen Ji bought all the ingredients they needed and also Yu Chiyin’s favorite fruits. Before they left, she picked a popsicle to reward her wife.
They rode back on the scooter with bags of food. Yu Chiyin finished her popsicle and still wanted more. The last time she had one was before she started filming. She leaned on Shen Ji’s shoulder and complained, “It’s going to be a long time before I have another popsicle~”
“Hmm? What did you say?” The wind was loud, and Shen Ji couldn’t hear her clearly. She tilted her head to listen.
Yu Chiyin’s eyes moved. She had a mischievous idea. She leaned over and bit Shen Ji’s soft ear. “I said you bullied me by not buying me popsicles for so long.”
“Ooh!” Shen Ji’s hand trembled, and a sudden warmth rushed over her. Luckily, she was a trained martial artist, or they would have fallen off the scooter.
“Let go,” Shen Ji said with a hint of warning in her voice. The microphone only picked up the sound of their clothes rubbing. The sound of her ear being kissed and nibbled wasn’t heard, but Yu Chiyin kept mumbling, “No.”
From the camera’s view, it just looked like Yu Chiyin was leaning in to talk to Shen Ji. No one knew what she meant, but it made them anxious. They wanted to zoom in 100 times to figure it out.
“Be a good girl.” Shen Ji held her breath.
“I’ll buy you a popsicle when we get back.”
But Yu Chiyin wasn’t that easy to trick.
“When? How many times?” she asked.
Shen Ji understood what she was hinting at. She was asking when Shen Ji would fulfill her duties as a wife. Using the popsicle as a code word, they were openly talking about this in front of millions of viewers.
Shen Ji was helpless. “Are you that desperate?”
“I’m starving. What do you think?” she said, shamelessly showing her desire in Shen Ji’s ear. She had to use all her strength to stop herself from kissing her in the supermarket.
It’s not beauty’s fault, Yu Chiyin thought. When you have such a beautiful, gentle, and obedient wife, who wouldn’t want to eat her?
Yu Chiyin wasn’t a saint. She definitely wanted to “eat,” but it wasn’t the right time. She started to regret joining the show. Otherwise, she would be with her little wife in a hotel room right now.
“When we get back,” Shen Ji said simply, her ears turning red. “As many times as you want.”
Yu Chiyin was finally satisfied and let go of Shen Ji’s ear. It was a little wet and red. She didn’t know if it was because she had bitten it or if Shen Ji was just embarrassed.
******
[I think they’re talking about more than popsicles…]
[Me too. :D]
[I feel like I’ve entered the world of adults.]
******
The viewers in the comments tentatively threw out their wild guesses. In the couple’s fan club, an artist immediately started writing a 30,000-word fanfiction about the “popsicle play.” The fanfiction became so famous that Yu Chiyin, who had a secret account, saw it and was amazed at how much her fans understood.
But that was a story for another time. For now, the two had to get back and cook. Shen Ji would be cooking for eight people, which would take a long time.
