Chapter 6: Y: What Can I Do to Make the Puppy Not Mad?
After returning home from the hospital, Yu Yao headed straight to the bathroom. Both her arms had scrapes, so she couldn’t get them wet. An X-ray of her tailbone showed no serious issues. So she carefully managed to shower while avoiding getting her arms wet, then walked—still damp—to the fridge to grab a bottle of water.
She had just taken a sip when the doorbell rang.
The video doorbell screen showed the property manager.
“Hello, is something the matter?” Yu Yao opened the door and glanced at the man and woman standing beside him—they looked a bit like food delivery personnel.
“Good evening, miss. These two are from a restaurant and said they were delivering under your name.”
Yu Yao frowned slightly. “I didn’t order anything. Must be a mistake.”
“Hello, ma’am,” said the female staff member in front, “we’re from Cháoshí. Housekeeper He asked us to bring you dinner.”
Yu Yao was surprised, but since they were already here, she figured there was no point in sending them back. The two staff quickly arranged the food on the dining table and left quietly.
Yu Yao closed the door behind them and returned to the table, glancing at the utensils, which were branded with the restaurant name “Cháoshí” — the very same exclusive restaurant she knew.
Private chef. Members only. Reservations required half a month in advance. No delivery service.
Apparently, there really was nothing the wealthy couldn’t make happen.
The food was just enough, with no wasteful portions. After tidying up the table, Yu Yao collapsed onto her comfy sofa, utterly exhausted.
Right then, her phone pinged. It was a message from Housekeeper He.
@InHeWeTrust: “Miss Yu, our young lady said she’s already sent you a friend request on WeChat. She hopes you’ll accept it.”
Yu Yao had just finished reading when she exited the chat and opened her friend request list.
Since she used the same WeChat account for both work and personal life, she received tons of requests daily. She looked through them carefully now, but it was honestly hard to pick out which one was from that unforgettable beauty of a young lady.
“YaoYaoPrincessNumberOneFan” — probably a gamer. Rejected.
“AAA Xia Sister Personal Shopper Store” — reseller. Rejected.
“LazyCorpse” — completely random. Rejected.
Yu Yao’s finger slid across the screen. She scanned through the list but couldn’t find anyone who might be the girl from earlier. Did something go wrong?
Just then, Housekeeper He sent more messages.
@InHeWeTrust: “Oh right, here’s a screenshot of her profile — name and avatar, for you to check.”
@InHeWeTrust: “[Image.jpg]”
@InHeWeTrust: “Also, about the dinner from Cháoshí — did it meet your expectations? If you’re satisfied, we can have them take care of all your meals this month. Or if there’s anything you’d like changed, just let me know and I’ll arrange it.”
Yu Yao didn’t even look at the third message. Her eyes were glued to the screenshot.
She immediately exited the chat, rushed back to the friend request screen, and spotted the exact same name and avatar from the screenshot.
Yup. She had rejected her right off the bat.
…
Back at home, Lu Zhilin was still in shock from the friend request rejection when suddenly, a new message popped up:
Friend Request Message: “Sorry, sorry — accidental swipe!”
And just like that, her emotions shot back up like a rollercoaster. From the pit of disappointment, straight to the peak of joy — a thrilling ride.
After some back-and-forth, they finally became WeChat friends. Yu Yao, out of habit, clicked into Lu Zhilin’s Moments. As expected, there was nothing — clearly a brand-new account.
Although Yu Yao found that a bit disappointing, her attention was quickly drawn to the profile background photo. Those eyes were mesmerizing — staring into them felt like being pulled into shallow amber whirlpools.
Almost without thinking, Yu Yao saved the image to her phone.
Meanwhile, Lu Zhilin was agonizing over what her first message to the Princess should be.
Lying in bed, she rolled around indecisively, until — thunk! — her phone slipped from her grip and smacked her right in the face. Her prominent nose took the full hit and instantly turned red.
But she had no time to worry about her stinging nose, because — oh no! — the phone had already sent out a message.
YaoYaoPrincessNumberOneFan: “[Angry Puppy.jpg]”
Aaaaahhhhh!! Lu Zhilin shot upright in bed, panicking as she began typing clumsily. She was too shy to send a voice message to the Princess.
Y: “Why are you upset?”
Y: “Sorry — I really did hit the wrong button just now.”
Y: “What can I do to make the puppy not mad?”
Reading those three almost instant replies, Lu Zhilin had only one thought:
The Princess types so fast!
But as she properly digested the words, a blush crept up her cheeks. Fidgeting a bit, she finally gave up her “old-lady-style” typing and sent a voice message instead.
“Yu Yao, I’m not mad! My phone fell on my face, so I accidentally sent the wrong one.”
Yu Yao listened to the message — her voice was sweet and sticky, like her mouth was full of candy. Yu Yao could almost picture her expression: shy, excited.
Y: “If you weren’t going to send that, what were you going to send?”
Lu Zhilin bit her lip. Even her fingertips felt a little tingly. After a moment, she picked the cutest sticker she could find and sent it over.
YaoYaoPrincessNumberOneFan: “[Puppy spinning in circles.gif]”
Sunken into her sofa, Yu Yao stared at the circling puppy on the screen for a moment — then let out a soft chuckle.
She had only interacted with this girl twice in total, but both encounters had left her with the same impression: an earnest innocence. Like milk added to a latte — smoothing out the bitterness with subtle tenderness.
It had been a long time since someone piqued her interest like this.
But the moment she remembered the other girl’s background, Yu Yao’s reaching hand paused, then slowly withdrew.
She didn’t want to treat emotions lightly. She wanted to be serious with every connection.
But clearly, the two of them lived in completely different worlds. Too many differences would make every interaction feel lopsided and strange.
More messages continued to pop up on WeChat, but now that Yu Yao had figured things out, she didn’t want to waste her time on hollow conversations.
She locked her phone and stepped into her studio.
…
Meanwhile, Lu Zhilin was curled up under the covers, still holding her phone. Only a small nightlight remained on, softly illuminating her screen with the pale green glow of the WeChat chat box.
She had sent Yu Yao many little messages, but the responses she got back were curt and distant.
Lu Zhilin figured the Princess must’ve been exhausted from getting injured today.
She probably shouldn’t bother her anymore.
So this time, she didn’t send a voice message. Instead, she carefully typed out just two words and hit send.
YaoYaoPrincessNumberOneFan: “Good night.”
Then she gently set her phone aside, closed her eyes, and drifted off to sleep.
