The Garbage Collector Who Stumbled Upon Mythical Weapons! - Chapter 1
“A Clear Blue Sky!”
“Refreshing Greenery!”
“The Crisp Morning Air—!”
Garm let out a deep sigh as he looked at the scene before him.
“—And then, trash, trash, trash! Mountains of garbage!!”
He was standing in a small grove on the outskirts of the city. In front of him were towering piles of garbage dumped in an open lot, making him feel completely exhausted.
Garm was one of the private waste disposal workers hired by the city.
“Garm, if you don’t hurry up, we won’t finish today’s work!”
“Yeah, yeah, I know!”
Hearing his coworker Nick call out to him, Garm sighed and reluctantly started sorting the trash.
His job was to separate waste into burnable and non-burnable categories, then further divide the non-burnable items into reusable materials before transporting everything to their designated locations.
“Sigh… How long do I have to keep doing this job?”
Garm muttered complaints as he worked. He didn’t like this job and wished he could quit.
He had originally been an adventurer, dreaming of making a name for himself, getting rich, and marrying a beautiful wife. But reality wasn’t that kind.
He had achieved nothing of significance, and now, at thirty-four years old, he could no longer afford to chase dreams. So he gave up being a broke adventurer and took a more stable job as a garbage collector, which ensured steady income from the city.
It wasn’t a high-paying job, but it was still better than being an adventurer.
Garm had no education or special talents, so he was grateful just to have been hired.
Most importantly, garbage would never stop existing, making it a very stable job.
But after nearly a year, Garm was losing motivation. Perhaps it was because he still had lingering regrets about his adventuring days.
“Hey, time to head back!”
As the sun began to set, the team leader overseeing the area gave the signal to wrap up. Garm stopped working and prepared to leave.
Sorting the trash alone took a lot of time, and finishing in a single day was impossible. The workers knew this, so they didn’t push themselves too hard and instead prepared for the next day.
As Garm was about to leave, he noticed something placed under the shade of a tree, a little away from the designated garbage area.
Technically, people weren’t supposed to leave trash there, but it wasn’t uncommon for garbage to be dumped in random places. Curious, Garm walked over to move it to the proper location.
“Hey, Garm! What’s up? Let’s go already!”
“Yeah, you go ahead. Someone dumped trash in the wrong spot, so I’ll clean it up first.”
Hearing that, Nick just shrugged and said, “Don’t overdo it,” before heading home.
“Alright, let’s see…”
Garm approached the “garbage” and checked it. It looked like a pile of scrap metal, covered in dirt and mud.
It seemed that someone had thrown away old swords and armor.
“I could sell this for money…”
Metal items could be melted down and reused. Since the world was currently at war with the demon race, iron was in high demand and sold for good prices.
Garm decided to take it home and sell it.
Technically, any discarded garbage became city property.
However, since waste disposal was an unpopular job, there was a rule allowing workers to take discarded items if they wanted.
It was a way to promote the job by offering potential extra earnings.
That said, valuable items rarely ever showed up in the trash…
Garm grabbed one of the carts used for work and brought it over.
He figured he could return it in the morning, so he loaded the armor and other items onto the cart.
That’s when he noticed something odd—the armor and swords felt unnaturally light.
“Huh? I thought this was iron, but maybe not?”
Garm tapped on the armor. Judging by the hardness and sound, it was definitely metal.
Still puzzled, he piled everything onto the cart and pulled it back home.
When he arrived, he unloaded the filthy scrap metal and carried it inside.
His home was a simple rental house not far from his workplace. It wasn’t luxurious, but it was enough for a single man to live comfortably.
He brought the scrap metal to the washing area and began cleaning it with water.
It was far too dirty to sell as it was.
Using a metal scrubber, he vigorously cleaned a mud-covered helmet.
Slowly, the surface beneath started to show.
“Huh?”
It was a brilliant blue metal. As he continued scrubbing, he noticed red and green gemstones embedded in it.
At first, he thought it was just rusty old metal, but that wasn’t the case at all.
It was more like something had been intentionally dirtied.
“Could this be a hidden treasure…?”
Excited, Garm started scrubbing the other swords and armor with all his might.
As he cleaned them, he laid them out in front of him and gasped.
“What… What is this? I’ve never seen anything like this in any weapon shop in the city!”
Before him were dazzling armor sets, cloaks made of fine fabric, and swords and helmets fit for royalty.
There was no way these were ordinary discarded items.
—Why were these thrown away?
Garm picked up a helmet, examined it from various angles, and then decided to try it on.
He wondered if it would fit, but surprisingly, it settled perfectly on his head.
For a moment, it felt like the helmet had shrunk slightly to fit his head, but he dismissed it as his imagination.
It was a full-face helmet, with the eye section made of clear glass.
As he looked around, strange letters appeared on the glass.
“What the…? What are these letters?”
When he looked at his desk, text appeared near it, describing its materials and use. The same thing happened when he looked at his chair.
And then, it hit him.
“No way… This is… ‘Appraisal’!?”
“Appraisal” was a rare skill that allowed a person to see information about objects and people. Only priests from the church could use it.
It was impossible for an ordinary person to have this ability.
Yet, through this helmet, Garm was somehow able to use Appraisal.
“Is this the helmet’s ability? If so… this is incredible!”
Excited, Garm turned his gaze toward the “swords” and “armor” lying on the floor.
The information displayed through Appraisal left him stunned.
