The Garbage Collector Who Stumbled Upon Mythical Weapons! - Chapter 34
“The moment we get close, they run away, but sometimes they attack us too… It’s really troubling.”
The village chief spoke with a tired expression. Seeing that, Van could imagine how difficult it must have been.
“Leave the rest to us. Also, it’s dangerous, so please stay away during the subjugation.”
“I-I understand! Please take care of it!”
Saying that, the village chief quickly left.
“Alright! Let’s get started.”
At Van’s signal, the members of ‘Great Eagle’ began their preparations.
Sophia and Amber stepped back and raised their staffs, while Van and Clay moved forward, putting down the items they had brought.
Van had brought a bow and two hundred arrows.
He was a complete beginner with a bow, but when it came to taking down birds flying in the sky, this was the only option he could think of.
Clay had prepared fifty wooden spears, planning to take down the Rakshasa Birds by throwing them.
Clay looked up at the birds flying in the sky.
“If I hit one, it should go down in a single strike…”
Clay had never tried throwing weapons either, but he optimistically believed that if he threw enough, he’d eventually hit one.
Meanwhile, Garm had prepared—
“Hey, what the heck is that!?”
Clay furrowed his brows and gave Garm a puzzled look as he saw the weapon he was holding.
From his backpack, Garm pulled out a slightly larger-than-usual hammer.
“I’m gonna use this!”
Saying that, Garm walked toward the river flowing beside the field.
He picked up a large stone, carried it back to where Van and the others were, and—
“What are you planning to do, Garm?”
“Just watch!”
Ignoring Clay’s curiosity, Garm swung his hammer down on the stone.
With a loud impact, the stone shattered into smaller pieces, just the right size for throwing.
Repeating this process several times, Garm piled up a large number of stones beside the field. Then, picking up one, he took aim at a Rakshasa Bird perched on a tree branch.
“Alright… Take this!!”
The stone shot through the air like a bullet, slicing through the wind with a sharp sound.
The Rakshasa Bird noticed too late and couldn’t dodge. The stone struck its body mercilessly, piercing through it in one clean hit.
A one-shot kill.
The sheer force left no room for resistance.
Van and the others let out a collective “Oooohhh!” in amazement.
“Well, that’s how it’s done!”
Garm smirked confidently, picking up two more stones and this time throwing them at the Rakshasa Birds flying in the sky.
But—
“Huh?”
The stones missed and cut through the empty air.
“That’s weird…”
Garm kept throwing, but the birds dodged each time. Unlike the first one, the Rakshasa Birds were now wary, flying around to avoid the attacks.
“What was that!? You only hit the first one!”
“Shut up! My arm just isn’t warmed up yet!!”
Annoyed by Sophia’s remark, Garm kept throwing stones furiously. In no time, the pile of stones was gone, and he had to go back to the river to get more.
“We’re up next.”
“Yeah.”
Responding to Van, Clay grabbed one of the weapons they had brought.
Since Garm had already taken down one, the Rakshasa Birds on the ground had all taken flight and were circling above, as if threatening them.
Van pulled back the bowstring and released an arrow toward the birds.
But he missed. He already knew he had no talent for archery, but more than that, he realized just how fast the birds were.
Clay faced the same issue. No matter how many times he threw his wooden spears, they only spun uselessly through the air.
“Damn it! This isn’t working…”
After an hour of effort, they had only managed to bring down eight birds. The three men were completely exhausted, slumping over in frustration.
“Seriously? After all that effort, only eight? You guys are pathetic!”
Sophia scolded them, but Garm and the others were too tired to even argue.
After resting at the village chief’s house for a while, they returned to the field—only to find that the number of Rakshasa Birds had increased instead of decreasing.
They perched on tree branches, strutted through the fields as if they owned the place. Seeing this, Garm clenched his fists in anger.
“These bastards… They’re completely looking down on us.”
Irritated, he looked down at his own arms.
He was still wearing the Oni God Vedernes’ Gauntlets and the Sky God Hermes’ Greaves, but so far, they hadn’t been of much use.
—If I use Aerial Step, I could catch up to them… but I can’t exactly show that skill in front of Van and the others.
While he was thinking this, Amber, who had been fidgeting nervously, suddenly stepped forward.
“I-I’ll… give it a try.”
“Amber? You have a plan?”
“Y-yeah.”
She nodded to Garm’s question, then raised her staff high.
“G-Garm! Make all the birds fly up!”
“O-okay, got it!”
Garm picked up a stone again and threw it at the Rakshasa Birds walking through the fields.
With a deafening sound, the stone shot forward at terrifying speed. It missed the birds but struck the ground, sending dirt flying everywhere.
The Rakshasa Birds panicked and all took to the air.
Seeing this, Amber infused her staff with magic power and began chanting a spell.
“O spirits that fill the sky, hear my voice and show your power!”
The air began to move, gently and quietly.
It was a small change, barely noticeable from the ground—but to the birds flying above, it was different.
They could no longer grasp the wind properly, making it difficult to fly.
The birds, which had soared high above, started losing altitude, gradually coming down to a level where they could be reached with a sword.
“Garm! Clay!!”
“”Ohhh!!“”
Van, sword in hand, called out to them.
Garm and Clay nodded and dashed forward, drawing their swords.
Garm glanced at his newly bought longsword.
“Don’t you dare break this time!”
With the brand-new sword in his right hand, he ran across the battlefield even faster than Van and Clay.
