The Garbage Collector Who Stumbled Upon Mythical Weapons! - Chapter 41
“This request is as dangerous as an A-rank mission. However, due to the urgency and the need for more people, the kingdom has decided to accept participants ranked C and above. How about it? Will you take it on?”
The adventurers gathered at the guild exchanged glances. Even if the reward was high, they would be facing an army of ten thousand demons.
It was a life-or-death mission. Among the adventurers present was Albatross, led by Makaos, but even they hesitated.
“Hmph, I suppose there’s no helping it.”
With that, Jacob raised three fingers on his right hand, making sure the adventurers could see.
“30 points! The guild will award 30 evaluation points for each demon you slay! How about it? Will anyone fight for the kingdom?”
“30 points!? In that case, I’m in!”
“M-Me too! I’ll do it!”
“If that’s the deal, then count me in!”
The adventurers began volunteering one after another. Thirty points per demon was an incredible offer, equivalent to slaying a large dragon.
The guild’s reception area was soon swarmed with adventurers eager to accept the request.
“Whoa! Looks like even Makaos and his group are taking the job. What do you think, Van?”
Garm was eager to accept. He had fought and defeated demons before.
This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—huge rewards, a flood of points, and a chance to rank up significantly.
“Hmm…”
Van also wanted to accept, but he couldn’t ignore the fact that this was a life-threatening mission.
As the leader, he couldn’t make a hasty decision. There was also the uncertainty of how Jacob’s direct request would affect things.
As Van pondered—
“Hohoho, are you not going?”
“Jacob!”
Jacob had stepped down from the platform and approached with Natasha by his side. He smiled warmly at Van, who was deep in thought.
“I would like to accept, but I wasn’t sure how your direct request would affect things…”
“Is that all?”
Jacob let out a sigh and spread both his palms for Van to see.
“Ten demons! If you take down at least ten, I’ll approve your promotion to B-rank!”
“Ten!? That’s all!?”
Garm’s eyes widened at the offer.
—Piece of cake! My luck is finally turning around!
“Also, even if you earn enough points to reach A-rank, normally you’d need to pass an exam. But for your team, I’ll make an exception and waive it.”
“Y-You’re serious!?” Garm exclaimed, barely able to contain his excitement.
“I am. Hohoho.”
“Alright! We’re in! Everyone’s on board, right?”
Garm’s teammates from Great Eagle all nodded in agreement.
“How will we confirm our demon kills?”
Garm leaned forward as he asked, and Natasha answered in Jacob’s place.
“Bring back their left ears. Demon ears are distinctive, so we can verify them that way.”
“The ears… Just the ears!?”
“Yes, exactly.”
—In that case, I can use that…
A grin spread across Garm’s face as he bolted for the guild entrance.
“Hey! Where are you going, Garm!?”
“Van! Go ahead without me! I’ll head home to prepare and catch up soon!!”
With that, Garm dashed out of the guild and disappeared into the distance, leaving Van and the others stunned.
“Will he be alright? There isn’t much time left,” Jacob said, stroking his beard, concern in his voice.
“Y-Yeah…”
“The Demon Lord’s army is approaching from the north of Rayford. The royal army is on its way, but they won’t be enough to win.”
“We’ll head out immediately!”
Van approached the reception desk and officially accepted the demon subjugation request. Though he went through the procedure calmly, he couldn’t hide the unease in his eyes.
Garm’s strength would be crucial in this battle.
As Van and his team stepped outside—
“Are we seriously leaving without Garm!? We’re heading north, and his house is all the way at the southern edge of town! Will he even make it in time!?”
Clay voiced his concern, but Van steeled himself. He had no choice but to trust Garm.
“We’re going ahead. Garm will come!”
◇◇◇
Garm sprinted toward his house. Since he wasn’t on a mission, he wasn’t wearing the Sky God Hermes’ Greaves.
It would take him some time, but once he returned home and equipped his greaves and cloak, he’d be able to race to northern Rayford at incredible speed.
—If I only need to bring back the ears, then I can go all out. That means I could take down hundreds… no, maybe even a thousand demons! If that happens, I could easily reach A-rank!
Garm’s excitement grew.
He never expected an opportunity like this to come his way. Now, both wealth and fame were within his grasp.
With those thoughts in mind, he sprinted at full speed toward his house, where his weapons and armor were hidden.
◇◇◇
Northeast of Rayford
In an open field with a clear view of the surroundings, General Johann stood tall.
Behind him, the royal army was lined up—2,000 cavalry and 3,000 infantry.
“Those bastards… They’re advancing south much faster than I expected.”
Johann clenched his teeth, frustration evident on his face.
“What’s the status of the request to the guild?”
He turned to his adjutant, Trinken.
“Sir! The request has been accepted. Jacob has confirmed that adventurers are on their way. However, we don’t know how many will come.”
“I see…”
Johann’s expression darkened. They had only 5,000 troops to face the Demon Lord’s army.
And in one-on-one combat, humans were no match for demons.
They were at a crushing disadvantage. Without adventurers, this battle was already lost.
“This is going to be a brutal fight.”
