The Goddess Granted Me the [Hatching] Skill and Somehow I Became the Strongest Tamer, Commanding Mythical and Divine Beasts - 69
Chapter 69: Visiting the Alchemist Guild (Part 5)
After leaving the café, we visited the next building.
This building was different from the farm we had just been to. It was entirely surrounded by high walls, and the ceiling had a net over it. It looked more like the facilities of the Tamer Guild.
At the entrance, there was a large gate wide enough for a carriage to pass through. Lorraine showed her ID and talked to the security personnel.
We went through a light body check (Celia was checked by a female guard) before we were finally allowed inside.
“What kind of facility is this?”
Since the previous facility was used to grow plants needed for alchemy, it was natural to assume that this place had something to do with alchemy as well. The fact that we went through a body check made it seem like an even more important facility.
“If the previous place was a farm for producing rare plant-based alchemy items, then this is more like a ranch,” Lorraine answered, turning to me.
“Still… aren’t all the buildings here really sturdy?”
As Celia pointed out, in the previous farm, except for some areas, we could see what was being grown. But here, except for the hallway, there were only large buildings lined up.
The height of the outer walls and the high level of security made it seem overly cautious.
“I’ll answer that question now. First, let’s enter this building.”
Lorraine scanned her security card and led us through three sets of doors.
Each door took some time to open and close, so it took quite a while before we could enter.
Inside, it was a dimly lit room, just like the one where magic was being applied to the plants earlier.
The only sound was from the magic tools in operation. Behind a transparent panel, there was a field with grass planted in it, and guild members were observing from an upper floor.
“Celia, are you okay this time?”
“Yes, brother. This kind of facility has magical tools running, so I might feel some of the magic, but it’s nothing to worry about.”
Celia smiled and assured me there was no problem.
Still, I decided to keep an eye on her to make sure she wasn’t pushing herself just to not spoil the tour, since she might still be feeling unwell.
“So, what exactly is this place used for?”
Celia tilted her head and asked Lorraine. So far, all I saw were some stones scattered on the grass, making it look like a recreated plain.
“Shh… please look over there.”
Lorraine put her hand to her mouth and pointed in a certain direction. Then, I saw it…
“A D-rank monster: [Spider].”
A monster with eight legs and eight eyes, about the height of my waist, was standing there.
“Eek!”
Celia screamed and clung to me.
“Brother…”
“It’s okay,” I reassured her.
Celia gripped my clothes with a worried expression. A D-rank monster was an incredibly dangerous creature that most people would never encounter in their lifetime, so I understood her fear.
“It’s fine. We have a barrier up with this magic circle,” Lorraine said, not showing any signs of fear as the spider approached.
I made eye contact with the spider and felt a pressure in my throat. The monster was known for its powerful poison, but Lorraine remained calm.
“Are you taming it?”
I asked, deducing from her calm demeanor.
“No, it knows it can’t harm us.”
It seemed that Lorraine trusted the powerful barrier set by an enchantment specialist.
“U-Um… why is there a monster here?”
Celia asked, still cautiously.
“At the Alchemist Guild, we also research various medicines.”
Lorraine began to answer Celia’s question.
“The venom from the spider’s claws causes paralysis and breathing difficulties when it spreads through the body.”
That was probably the reason Celia hated it so much.
“While it’s not deadly, it’s common knowledge that spiders are dangerous due to their poison, so if you see one, you’re advised to flee.”
“However, by mixing this venom, we can create a powerful antidote.”
“You can make medicine from poison…?”
I was amazed that they could make a cure from something so harmful.
“In alchemy, poison and medicine are essentially the same thing. It’s just the difference in how they affect the body,” Lorraine explained after hearing my words. That was the most interesting and new idea I had heard in my life.
“And is there any connection with raising spiders?”
Celia glanced uneasily at the spider, then pressed herself tightly against my back.
“Spiders are born from eggs. Recently, the technology for protective magic has advanced, and stable hatching conditions have been established.”
Research is constantly being conducted at the Mage Guild and the Enchanter Guild.
There has also been the development of technology to contain monsters.
“If we raise them this way, in case of an accident where many people are poisoned, we can quickly create an antidote potion.”
Poison is troublesome, though not as dangerous as the petrification from a Cockatrice. I struggled with the Poison Toad during our battle with it as well.
“That’s true. This way, we avoid the trouble of traveling deep into the forest, and transporting the materials becomes much easier.”
In fact, spiders tend to burrow in sandy areas, making it hard to find and hunt them. If we could just come here for the venom, we could spend more time on other requests.
“Currently, we are also researching the breeding environment for other poisonous monsters.”
While I was thinking about that, Lorraine continued her explanation.
“Such as what?”
Celia asked.
“Right now, we are challenging the hatching of Cockatrice eggs. The conditions are far stricter than for spiders, though…”
“Ah… now that you mention it…”
I remembered something when I heard that. While I was taking the national adventurer exam, there was a request for Cockatrice eggs. I thought it was for cooking, but perhaps it was actually a request from the Alchemist Guild?
“Cockatrice… Is it for mass-producing a petrification cure potion?”
Celia asked her question.
“Yes, for now, the most troublesome damage caused by monsters is petrification.”
Although the Cockatrice is slow, the number of victims is low, but once someone is petrified, it becomes difficult to heal them.
“Fifty years ago, the petrification cure potion was finally invented, so it’s no longer considered an incurable disease.”
Lorraine spoke to us about the history of alchemy.
“However, every year, many precious lives are lost.”
The petrification can be reversed only if the person is preserved perfectly as a statue, but if they break or are damaged in any way, healing becomes impossible. That’s also because the stock of petrification cure potions is low.
“We don’t want to lose lives we could have saved.”
That’s why they’re researching it, she said.
“That’s a noble idea.”
I felt a sense of respect for Lorraine’s high ideals.
“Cockatrices don’t lay eggs very often, so just obtaining one costs quite a lot of money…”
When Celia said that,
“We’re prepared for that. If we manage to hatch them, we’re hoping to collaborate with the Tamer Guild.”
By linking the research on raising them with a tamer’s training, the goal is to collect materials, not cause harm.
“Ah, if there’s anything I can do to help, I’ll be glad to.”
With my hatching skills, I could be of great assistance. If we get the eggs, I won’t hesitate to help.
“If you’re as skilled a tamer as Klaus, you might even be able to tame the Cockatrice. I’m counting on you.”
Lorraine said that and stared at me intently.
“We’ve arrived at the next breeding site.”
I realized I had gotten lost in the conversation. While we were talking, we had reached the next place.
It seemed the security here was lighter, and there appeared to be less dangerous monsters.
“This place doesn’t have the noble ideals of the previous one, but is involved with using current technology for business purposes,” Lorraine said lightly, trying to change the heavy atmosphere.
“What kind of business is it?”
Celia asked as she walked beside Lorraine and continued to ask questions while looking around.
“Hey, don’t stop suddenly.”
As we walked, Celia suddenly stopped, and I wasn’t able to stop in time, so I bumped into her.
“We raise monsters here that produce materials for making clothes, which will be sold to the Tailor Guild.”
Lorraine explained.
From where we were, I couldn’t see what was being grown. I peered over Celia’s shoulder into the breeding area, and there were many monsters squirming inside.
“They’re Magic Worms. These monsters produce fabric that can be used for robes, like the robes of magicians and healers, along with many other clothes. There are few threats, and they can provide a steady supply of materials, making it a good source of income.”
There were so many Magic Worms moving around inside the fence.
I thought back to when Purple was first born, feeling a sense of nostalgia…
“Celia?”
Lorraine peeked at Celia, who had been frozen in place for a while.
“Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!”
The next moment, Celia’s scream echoed throughout the building.
