The Goddess Granted Me the [Hatching] Skill and Somehow I Became the Strongest Tamer, Commanding Mythical and Divine Beasts - 70
Chapter 70: Visiting the Alchemist Guild (Part 6)
“Ugh… I still can’t get rid of the goosebumps.”
Celia, with a pale face, was rubbing her arms with her hands.
“I’m sorry. I thought Klaus-sama, being a Tamer, would have some resistance to it.”
Lorraine apologized to Celia with a wry smile. Her lips were curled up, clearly amused by Celia’s earlier panic.
“Don’t compare me to my brother. I… I’m different from him.”
Celia, unusually emotional, glared at Lorraine. It was rare for her to act this way, as she typically tried to maintain a composed front in front of people outside her family.
Maybe, after her earlier scream, she thought it would be pointless to pretend, or perhaps she felt comfortable with Lorraine. In any case, it’s good for the younger sister to have more friends.
“I can’t believe there are so many of those things… I really can’t be an alchemist!”
It was well-known that Celia had always been bad with creatures like that, but I wondered what would happen if I told her that before Purple evolved, it was a Magic Worm?
“Well, there are always creatures humans don’t like. I have my own fears too…”
“Even you, Lorraine, have something you’re afraid of? You seemed so calm earlier.”
Celia stared at Lorraine’s face.
“Oh, that’s right, you were afraid of the ghoul’s fingers, weren’t you?”
I remembered that during the National Adventurer’s Exam, Lorraine had asked me to collect ghoul fingers. When I handed her the bag with the fingers, I couldn’t forget her stiff expression.
“Well, that… is something any woman would find unpleasant. But it’s not that, um… I’ll stop here before I start complaining.”
Lorraine had a brief look of distaste before she changed her expression.
“Anyway, let’s move on to the next building.”
Lorraine hurried us to move. The Alchemist Guild grounds were vast, and it seemed like she wanted to show us many different facilities.
“This next building is here.”
Lorraine opened the door and stepped inside.
“Um… there aren’t any strange magical powers or odd monsters being kept here, right?”
Perhaps due to the trauma of earlier, Celia asked, her caution heightened.
“Don’t worry. There are no excessive magical powers or Magic Worms here.”
“I-I see…”
Celia, clearly relieved, showed her obvious relief.
“Well, this is the cutting edge of alchemy. I can’t deny that there are some… odd parts.”
Lorraine covered her mouth and gave a small chuckle. It was a little cruel to reassure her and then drop the bomb.
“Not again! Please, don’t scare me like that!”
Celia and Lorraine’s back-and-forth naturally brought a smile to my face. Lorraine seemed good at getting close to people and had Celia wrapped around her finger.
We passed through security and entered.
“This seems to be an alchemy workshop?”
There were various mixing tools I recognized from my visits to alchemy shops in rural towns. Inside, I could see guild members preparing some kind of mixture.
“The potion being made over there is for healing. Here, we make potions and sell them to the Adventurer’s Guild and the Kingdom,” Lorraine explained.
She explained that the herbs they grew at the farm earlier were turned into potions here and sold. This was also an important task to generate the funds for the Alchemist Guild.
“Now, what I want you to see, Klaus-sama, is the facility beyond here.”
Without hesitation, Lorraine led us deeper into the building, unlocking the security doors. The atmosphere here was different, and it felt like we were approaching something important.
“Unlike the external workshop, this area contains first-class magical tools and catalysts. Rare items. We’re researching various items that have unique effects using them.”
There weren’t as many alchemists here as in the previous workshop; instead, magical devices were operating.
“Here, magical tools take over much of the potion-making process. Precise measurements are done automatically, so the guild members’ role is mainly to prepare the catalysts and infuse them with magic.”
Now that she mentioned it, I noticed that the guild members in white coats and masks were grinding something in pestles on the work tables.
“Over there, they’re grinding ghoul claws. As you know, ghoul claws are very hard, so it’s a tough job.”
“Wait, those ghoul claws…?”
“Yes, those are the ones you defeated, Klaus-sama. I had them prepared for you while you were at the cafe.”
“My brother really defeated a ghoul…?” Celia asked, looking at me with a slightly shocked expression. I had been vague about the quests before, but it seemed this revelation caught her off guard.
“Yes, Klaus-sama was truly gallant during the battle,” Lorraine recalled, smiling as she placed a hand on her cheek.
“…I’ve never seen my brother fight. Could you show me sometime?”
Celia looked at me seriously, furrowing her brows.
“There’s no need to take you to a dangerous place for that, right?”
Although monsters near the capital weren’t very dangerous, it wasn’t something I planned to show off by going into the wilderness.
“…You go off to dangerous places on your own, though.”
Celia mumbled, looking dissatisfied, but when I tried to speak to her, she turned her face away.
“By the way, Lorraine, how do you use the magical tools?”
In the awkward silence, I asked Lorraine to change the subject.
“Well, first, you place the catalyst and materials here. Then, you set the water and infuse magic to activate it. The potion will then be automatically completed.”
“So, the material is the ghoul claws, and what’s the catalyst?”
“There are many types of potions made through alchemy, and the combinations of materials and catalysts produce different potions. This time, we’re using ghoul claws and a certain black powder to make a high-level antidote potion.”
Lorraine took the powdered ghoul claws from the guild member and placed them into the magical tool.
She then placed the familiar black powder into another compartment.
“The claws are consumable, but the catalyst can be reused, so we clean it and use it many times. The key to enhancing the effect is the compatibility between the catalyst and the magic infused by the person.”
Lorraine poured water into a transparent container and touched the magical stone at the center of the magical tool. Magic began to flow out.
“Wow, the amount of magic being infused is comparable to a high-level spell!”
I wasn’t an expert on magic, but from Celia’s serious expression, I understood that Lorraine was doing something impressive.
For several minutes, Celia and I watched as Lorraine poured in magic.
“Ha… ha… That’s all I can do. With my total amount of magic, I can only make one potion.”
Even after Lorraine stopped, the magical tool continued to work.
After a while, a black, transparent liquid filled the container below the tool.
“This is a high-level antidote potion. It can neutralize poisons from high-rank monsters, and it’s a pride of ours.”
“You used the ghoul’s claws’ deadly poison and reversed it with the dark attribute catalyst to turn it into an antidote effect?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
Celia’s analysis was correct, and Lorraine nodded.
“That’s an amazing item. Just having one of those on an adventure could greatly increase survival chances.”
If a healer who could use antidote magic was present, there wouldn’t be an issue, but that was rarely the case. Many adventurers had died because they couldn’t be cured of poison.
“Currently, the materials and the number of alchemists who can make it are limited, so it’s mostly sold to nobility and royalty.”
The reality was that the rarer and more powerful an item, the fewer there were and the harder they were to obtain.
“I wish they would be more widely available…”
Even if materials were gathered, there weren’t enough alchemists to make them.
“Antidote potions are still better. Petrification cure potions are even rarer. We only have one at our house.”
“Can you make them, Lorraine?”
When Celia asked, Lorraine shook her head.
“Petrification cure potions can only be made by a handful of alchemists, even in the guild. It requires immense magic power, experience in alchemy, and the facilities like these magical tools.”
Lorraine looked disappointed. Since I hadn’t done alchemy myself, I didn’t understand how difficult it was.
“Would you like to try alchemy for yourself?”
Suddenly, Lorraine changed her expression and made the suggestion.
“Can I?”
“We still have catalysts and the powder from the ghoul claws, so we can give it a try.”
I hadn’t expected her to let me use the high-priced magical tools, so I was surprised.
“Experience is important. Even if you decide to go down a different path, it’s good to get a feel for alchemy.”
“Come on, let her try.”
I encouraged Celia, who seemed hesitant, to give it a try.
Celia nodded, and then, for the first time, she stood before the magical tool to try making a potion.
