Chapter 101: Klaus’s Concern
“I saw you, so I called out to you. Was that a bother?”
She folded her parasol, slightly parted her lips, and gave a faint smile. Her movements were so perfect that I almost found myself mesmerized.
“No, it’s fine. I was just taking a break.”
When I looked at Rock, who was playing on my lap, she also turned her gaze toward him.
“………(Happy)”
Noticing Charlotte, Rock reached out to her.
“Oh my, how cute.”
I was surprised. Rock had no connection with Charlotte, and since he was shy, he had never approached a stranger like this before.
“This is rare. Rock has never warmed up to someone he just met before…”
Normally, he would hide behind me and observe first, so I had never seen this kind of behavior before.
“Hmm? Are you giving this to me?”
“………(Nods)”
He was already offering her a gift. Even a monster he had never met before liked her. Could this be her talent as a tamer?
“If you don’t mind, would you like to sit down?”
I felt bad making her stand while interacting with Rock, so I invited her to sit.
“Excuse me, then.”
Charlotte carefully adjusted her skirt and sat on the bench, leaving space for one person.
Rock jumped off my lap and moved toward hers.
“Ah! Hey!”
“It’s all right, Lord Klaus.”
Thinking he was being too forward, I tried to stop him, but Charlotte smiled and reassured me it was fine as she welcomed Rock.
I watched her play with Rock for a while. It was as if she already knew exactly where he liked to be petted. I had heard that Charlotte, like me, had tamed four familiars.
What kind of world did she see through her eyes?
How had she raised her familiars until now?
I found myself wondering.
Then, our eyes met. Had I been staring too much?
“Do you have something on your mind?”
A breeze blew, making her hair sway. Charlotte looked up at the sky, enjoying the moment, and smiled gently.
I had felt this before when we met previously—she had a certain presence that made me feel at ease. It wasn’t my imagination; she was genuinely easy to be around.
Maybe it wouldn’t be a bad idea to hear her opinion on my current situation.
“Actually…”
Something I would normally never do—expressing my weakness—felt completely natural with her at that moment.
“And that’s why Koku won’t warm up to me.”
After I finished explaining, Charlotte started thinking while petting Rock.
Rock seemed comfortable on her lap and had already fallen asleep.
“I’ve never been avoided by a familiar before… It’s bothering me more than I expected.”
I wanted to be close to Koku, but it was a one-sided feeling, and it hurt.
“I see. That does sound like a difficult problem.”
She placed a hand on her lips as she spoke.
“Even you think so, Charlotte?”
That was unexpected. She was born into the prestigious Boyle family of tamers and had already tamed four familiars. Since she had no trouble getting along with Rock, I didn’t think she would struggle with something like this.
“Yes. Even in the tamer school, many students have a hard time forming bonds with monsters.”
She didn’t attend the noble academy but rather the tamer school run by the Boyle family.
I was interested in the tamer school as well, but since I was asking for advice right now, I decided not to ask about it.
Charlotte suddenly raised her head.
“Oh, but… Koku’s species name is listed under your familiars in your status, right?”
I nodded in response.
“Yeah. He is definitely my familiar.”
That’s why I couldn’t understand why he was rejecting me.
At first, he had seemed affectionate.
“The hardest part for most students at the tamer school is getting a monster to like them enough for a contract. But if you’ve already formed a contract and he’s acting like this, it is indeed strange.”
The most challenging part of taming is gaining a monster’s trust.
The most common method is raising them from a young age and spending a long time together to build a bond.
Since Koku was already my familiar, we should have already moved past that stage. That was probably why even Charlotte was struggling to give me advice.
Charlotte remained deep in thought for a while.
Even though this wasn’t her problem, she was thinking about it so seriously that I felt bad.
Eventually, she looked up and said,
“I don’t think we’ll find the answer just by sitting here. Would it be all right if I visited your house and observed directly?”
“I don’t mind, but don’t you have things to do, Charlotte?”
Both of us lived in the noble district of the tamer area. Since there was no reason to come near the central castle unless we had business there, I was concerned.
“I was invited to a tea party, but I can just say I’m not feeling well.”
She placed a hand on her lips and added, “Please keep this a secret, okay?”
Her attitude made it seem like this matter was more important, and I appreciated that.
“Then, will you come over?”
And so, I took Charlotte back to my mansion.
