Chapter 106: Investigating the Crystal Cockatrice’s Habitat
“Wow, it’s really been a long time, hasn’t it?”
The guild staff member’s glasses gleamed as she smiled slightly. Right now, I was visiting the Tamer Guild for the first time in a while.
“The Guild Master said, ‘Klaus must be busy since he was summoned to the castle,’ so we waited, but if you had been one day later, I would have come to find you myself.”
She seemed quite upset on the inside, as there was a sharp tone to her words.
“The truth is, I’ve been dealing with some troublesome matters. It’s not that I was ignoring you.”
She had helped me ever since I was a beginner, so I couldn’t go against her.
I focused on trying to calm her down.
In reality, I had been caught up with Koku and Riko, and now that the issue was resolved, I was finally able to come here—but that was a secret.
“Well, fine. So, is that the Crystal Cockatrice the Guild Master mentioned?”
“Yes, that’s right. The chicken is Koku, and the snake is Riko.”
“Kokuu!”
“……!”
Koku spread his wings in response, and Riko flicked out his tongue to show himself.
“I see. The chicken and the snake are separate individuals! As expected of Klaus—you noticed that and even gave them each a name…”
After I explained the two creatures, the guild staff member’s glasses gleamed as she looked at me with admiration.
“Uh… haha…”
I gave her an awkward laugh, but…
“Kokuu~?”
“……”
The two of them looked at me with unimpressed eyes. Since this was a mistake I had made, having it brought up hurt a little.
“So, starting today, can I take care of Koku and Riko?”
Ignoring my feelings, the guild staff member asked to confirm why I had come.
“Yes, here’s the report I wrote at home.”
When registering a new familiar, the Tamer Guild must conduct a habitat investigation. I had already written the report at home, and since this was my fourth time doing it, I had gotten used to it.
“That’s helpful. So, are you staying overnight this time as well?”
She glanced at the luggage by my feet as she asked.
“Of course.”
Since it wasn’t a sudden trip this time, I had packed an overnight set and informed Celia.
I had also stayed over during Rock’s registration. Since habitat investigations often reveal new information, I planned to stay with them as much as possible.
“Just so you know, once we heard you tamed a new species, we made all the necessary preparations. Don’t think you can leave so easily.”
But then, the guild staff member’s glasses gleamed again as she spoke. It seemed she had been eagerly waiting for the chance to research such a rare monster.
“Kokokokokuu!?”
“……%”
Koku and Riko shivered, sensing her intense aura. Making an A+ ranked monster tremble—she was truly terrifying.
After seeing their reaction, the guild staff member erased her intimidating presence and said,
“Well then, I’ll guide you to the facility.”
With a smile, she led us to the guild’s research area.
“Alright, just act as you normally do.”
As usual, we walked through the guild facility while talking, and then we arrived at a certain location.
The habitat investigation this time would take place in an outdoor area surrounded by trees.
Four trees had cloth tied between them with ropes to create shade from the sun.
Under the shade, tables were set up for recording research findings.
Nearby, there was a large water tank designed to provide a suitable environment for aquatic monsters.
It seemed they had prepared a habitat similar to that of the Cockatrice, specifically for Koku and Riko.
“You two can just act normally,” I told them.
Koku was pecking at the ground with his beak, digging up earthworms. He came back with a worm in his mouth.
“Koku.”
“……”
The dirt-covered worm wiggled around. It didn’t seem to be struggling to escape Koku but rather was just surprised at being dug up.
Koku adjusted his grip by opening and closing his beak and then swallowed it skillfully.
“Oh, so Koku eats earthworms,” the guild staff member said, crouching down to observe him.
“He’s pretty omnivorous and eats just about anything.”
He even ate small insects in the garden at home, which helped with pest control—a big help.
“Does Riko eat anything?”
Curious, she put a hand on her cheek and tilted her head.
“He does eat, but his diet is quite different. He eats frogs and even chicken eggs.”
“Wait, isn’t that… cannibalism? Hmm, but since they’re monsters, maybe it’s different?”
Since Cockatrices have both a chicken’s head and a snake’s head, they are often classified as part of the chicken family.
If they eat chicken eggs, then what about the eggs they lay themselves?
“Now that you mention it, that is something to think about.”
I hadn’t thought much of it when he ate eggs from the chickens at home, but her comment made me reconsider.
“In the end, it doesn’t really matter, since no matter who eats, the nutrients still go to both of them.”
When Koku ate a lot, Riko didn’t eat, and when Riko ate, Koku stayed quiet. It was probably because they shared the same stomach…
As we talked about these things, Koku and Riko, now full, climbed up my body and fell asleep on my head.
