Chapter 119: Charlotte’s Trouble
“So, what should we do next?”
While we were talking, the other groups had already started moving. Now, only Charlotte, Koku, Riko, Squarl, and I were left in front of the dormitory.
“Well, if you don’t mind, would you go for a walk with me?”
Charlotte said that with a slightly gloomy expression.
She was probably still thinking about what happened with Negrei earlier. It seemed like she wanted to clear her mind.
“Leave the escorting to me. I’ll go anywhere with you.”
I patted my chest as I said that, and she smiled a little as if she felt better.
With Charlotte leading the way, we walked around the island.
I didn’t really know where everything was, but she kept walking without hesitation.
Along the way, we saw a Horn Rabbit in a grass field, a Rock Lizard in a rocky area, and by the river, a monster called Denden with a hard shell and a slimy body.
Surprisingly, none of the monsters were aggressive. Even when they saw Charlotte, they didn’t try to attack her.
Maybe the monsters here were naturally gentle. Their behavior was something you wouldn’t expect on the main island.
After walking for about thirty minutes, we reached a lake.
The temperature was low, and it felt a bit chilly, but Charlotte didn’t seem to mind. She walked up to the lake and sat on a nearby tree stump.
“I really like this place,” she said softly.
I didn’t know how to respond, so I just stood there. Meanwhile, Koku, Riko, and Squarl started playing around nearby.
After a while, Koku suddenly jumped onto Charlotte’s lap, holding a dirt worm in his mouth. Maybe he was trying to cheer her up.
“Koku?! No!”
She stood up in shock, and Koku and Riko tumbled onto the ground. The dirt worm wriggled on the ground near them.
Koku had probably wanted to give her something he liked, but it seemed Charlotte had an unexpected weakness.
“Hey! You shouldn’t jump on people so suddenly!”
I scolded them, but I couldn’t help but smile at Charlotte’s reaction.
“Ugh… I’m actually bad with these wriggly monsters…”
Did she have some kind of trauma?
Now that I thought about it, Celia also had a fear of insects because of something that happened when she was little.
As I was thinking about that—
“What’s wrong?”
Charlotte tilted her head and looked at me curiously.
“Oh, I just remembered when I used to run around the fields with my little sister.”
Celia was independent now, but back then, she always followed me around.
One time, she came with me when I went fishing. She got bored, so I suggested she try it too, but she started crying because she couldn’t put a worm on the hook.
Thinking about that memory made me smile.
“You must be really close with Celia. I’m jealous,” Charlotte said.
“We grew up together since we were kids.”
But it wasn’t like we were always close from the beginning.
When Celia was first taken in by my family, she was heartbroken after losing her parents in an accident. She barely responded when I talked to her.
Still, over time, we slowly got closer.
“You must really love Celia,” Charlotte said, covering her mouth as she giggled.
“Well… I won’t deny it.”
I scratched my cheek in embarrassment. We had spent years together, sharing many experiences.
“You’ll probably cry when she gets married,” Charlotte teased.
She always became a bit mischievous when we were alone. She leaned in, watching my reaction.
“…Don’t say that.”
Just imagining it made me feel down.
She found that funny and covered her mouth as she chuckled. It seemed like she was back to her usual self.
“How can I get along with people as well as you do, Klaus?”
Charlotte muttered, deep in thought.
“From what I see, people already like you enough.”
Douglas, of course, cared about her, and Scarlet always looked at her with gentle eyes. Her four familiars adored her, and even my own familiars warmed up to her from the start.
There was something about being near her that felt peaceful. I was sure I wasn’t the only one who felt that way.
“But the other students at school avoid me.”
Was that really true?
From what I saw earlier, they looked at her with admiration rather than avoidance.
“It’s always been like this. Even at parties, girls my age avoid me, and as for the men…”
She clenched the hem of her skirt tightly.
Maybe she wanted to be closer to others but didn’t have the courage to take the first step.
“At least from what I saw, the students at the Tamer School didn’t seem to dislike you.”
I didn’t know what they were thinking, but talking to them might help her understand them better.
“If you want to be closer to them, you have to talk to them first.”
She thought about it for a while.
“…Okay. I’ll try my best during this Tamer Camp.”
With that determined declaration, she looked like a normal girl her age.
