The Goddess Granted Me the [Hatching] Skill and Somehow I Became the Strongest Tamer, Commanding Mythical and Divine Beasts - 34
“Hey, mister. Is it still not done?”
“Ugh! Just be quiet and watch!”
Blaze is fighting several wraiths. He swings his sword, but the wraiths move unpredictably; they dodge just as they enter his attack range.
Normally, Blaze would calmly draw his opponent in and defeat them with a single blow, but he’s unable to do so because Melissa and the others are taunting him.
The wraiths fly through the air, tormenting Blaze. As monsters without physical form, they can only be harmed by magic or a magical sword.
They are classified as C-rank monsters.
As C-rank monsters, we, the examinees, have fought them in the first test for national adventurers, but few have experience defeating monsters that require magical power.
Magical swords are expensive, so usually, normal weapons are sufficient unless approaching such special places. Blaze is wielding a long sword with a sharp edge.
However, it’s not impossible to defeat them.
Wraiths rely on magical power, which depletes with each use of magic. If we avoid their attacks, they can be defeated. And for C-rank adventurers, avoiding obvious attacks is a piece of cake.
Even so, seeing Blaze being overwhelmed by multiple wraiths, I called out to him.
“Blaze, should I help?”
“This is my moment to shine. You stay out of it!”
Although I offered to help, Blaze, perhaps flustered from being outshined by Melissa and the others, insists on defeating them alone.
The constant interruptions have led to this situation. He has been so focused on passing the test that he’s refused to cooperate.
“Hmm, I can’t wait any longer. [Wind Breath]”
As I hesitated whether to intervene, Lucia cast a spell.
“What?!”
A gust of wind blew, causing Blaze to lose his balance. The wraiths were not much affected and attacked Blaze with shadowy arrows.
“[Purifying Flame]”
I created a barrier with [Purifying Flame] between Blaze and the wraiths, blocking their magic.
““““What?!“”””
The four wraiths were astonished and looked at me.
“Everyone, watch out for the wraiths’ movements!”
Wraiths have no emotions and did not miss the chance to attack during their surprise.
The closest wraith pounced on Lucia, who was casting a spell.
“Ahhhhhhhhhhh!”
The wraith approached and began to attack Lucia while she was casting a spell. Although it wasn’t an unavoidable attack if one remained calm, the three were completely frozen by the sudden turn of events.
—Shat—
“Ki ki ki… ki?”
“Huh?”
Lucia, who had been holding her head and closing her eyes, opened them.
“Are you okay?”
Before the wraith could attack Lucia, I had already slashed it down with my sword.
“What… what are you doing?”
Blaze looked at me defenselessly. Seeing the wraiths’ movement halted, I seized the opportunity to attack.
“[Phoenix Feather]”
I turned around and sent two fiery feathers from [Phoenix Feather] to strike the remaining wraiths.
“Th… amazing…”
“Beautiful…”
I heard Melissa and Lorraine’s voices.
“Ki… ki… ki…”
The wraiths were consumed by the flames and vanished.
After finishing the investigation for the day, we returned to the castle courtyard where the teachers and examiners were.
There was a strong barrier around, making it perfectly safe from monsters.
This monster-repelling barrier does not affect Purple. As my familiar, it passes through without issue.
Thus, we planned to have a meal and rest, but…
“There seem to be quite a few people looking quite battered, don’t you think?”
Looking around, it was evident that both adventurers and academy students were quite exhausted.
“We helped those who ran out of magical power and were only able to defend themselves during the investigation.”
The examiner leading this investigation explained.
“Even so, Klaus’s team is completely unharmed.”
“Yes, well. We had magical swords and a familiar with us.”
“I see… I thought the familiar was not suited for combat, but it seems quite capable.”
“……♪”
Purple was squirming at my chest.
Since tamers are allowed to bring one familiar, I had informed the examiner about Purple.
Though a rare monster, Purple is quite skilled and has been assisting with the investigation without drawing attention.
“Yes, it’s a very reliable companion.”
Hearing praise for Purple made me feel proud.
“You truly care for your familiar, don’t you?”
The examiner looked surprised. I tilted my head, unsure of the meaning.
“Oh, sorry. I see many tamers in my line of work, but most have some level of trust, yet do not hold such intimate feelings for their monsters.”
This is likely because those aiming to be tamers are initially training monsters as combat assets.
“I once spoke with a tamer from the Boyle Count family. They, too, held affection for their monsters. Perhaps it’s such traits that make monsters like them.”
