- Chapter 11 - Argument on the Way Home
“There, love, have a grape.”
“Try this orange, it’s proper sweet.”
The old man tried to shove every bit of good food he had into Yun Jiao’s mouth.
Yun Jiao took it all, opening wide for every bite, her cheeks getting all plump and round from the constant chewing.
She was a sight.
In contrast, Father Yun stood nearby, looking stiff and awkward.
“Daddy, you have a grape.”
Yun Jiao hadn’t forgotten her quiet, honest father.
Father Yun shook his head. “No, Jiao Jiao, you eat.”
Yun Jiao just stood on her tiptoes and held the grape right up to his mouth, making him take it.
“Eat it, Dad.”
Oranges, bananas… it was the same drill: if her dad wouldn’t eat it, she’d make him.
Father Yun let out a hiccup. Daughter, slow down a bit!
Wang Jianlin and his wife, however, admired how easygoing Yun Jiao was.
The main thing was, the girl was truly beautiful, and Wang Jianlin’s wife couldn’t stop stealing looks at her.
If only she had such a pretty daughter herself.
After the couple had finally settled the old man to sleep, Yun Jiao and Father Yun got ready to leave.
Just then, Wang Jianlin’s secretary arrived with Yun Jiao’s two elder brothers.
Yun Chendong and Yun Chenxi were both dark and lean, but they were already over six feet tall—their family were generally tall folk.
Since they worked out on fishing boats constantly, their strength was considerable, and their arms carried a thin layer of muscle.
Wang Jianlin nodded approvingly at the two sharp-looking young men.
“So, how’d it go? Everything tickety-boo?”
The two lads were still young. Facing someone like Wang Jianlin, who seemed gentle but had serious influence, they were tongue-tied. It was the secretary who stepped in.
“I checked them over inside. Their health indicators are very healthy, and their performance on all the fitness tests was good, too. They’ll definitely be selected.”
Hearing this, the two brothers were absolutely ecstatic, grinning widely to show off their neat, white teeth.
Father Yun, bursting with excitement, kept saying, “Thank you, sir, thank you so much…”
Wang Jianlin chuckled. “Actually, I should be thanking you first.”
In the end, Wang Jianlin and his wife pressed a load of fruit and pastries into Yun Jiao’s hands for her to take home.
Having left the posh house, Father Yun was still completely stunned on the way home.
“That was a proper big boss, wasn’t he? We actually chatted with a big leader and went to his house for a visit.”
The two brothers, Yun Chendong and Yun Chenxi, were just as delighted.
The elder, Yun Chendong, immediately picked up his sister and bounced her up in the air a couple of times. “This is the good fortune our Jiao Jiao brought us.”
Father Yun nodded furiously, his expression exceptionally proud. “You’re right! Our Jiao Jiao is kind-hearted; she was even willing to share her meat bun.”
Meat buns were such a luxury back then, and children always wanted them. Usually, a child Yun Jiao’s age would never be willing to part with food they had.
Yun Jiao was a greedy eater but wasn’t exactly possessive—mind you, you couldn’t snatch anything from her hand. If you tried, she’d lose her temper; she had to be willing to give it away herself.
They travelled home on the tractor. They were laden down with large and small bags, especially the pastries and fruit, which looked expensive.
As soon as they boarded, the entire family became the focus of everyone’s attention.
“Well, look at that! Seems like Lin Hai’s lot has come into a bit of cash, then? You can afford to splash out on all these fancy things?”
Someone immediately rushed to ask as soon as they got on, and everyone around pricked up their ears, waiting for the gossip.
People back then, especially in the village, had no issue with prying into anyone’s private business.
They were all from the same village; if something happened to one family, the whole village would know about it within a day.
Father Yun smiled honestly. “You all know our family’s situation, don’t you? Where would we get the money to buy all this precious stuff? We’re still saving up to buy a boat! No, this is all down to pure luck. We saved a lost elderly gentleman who had memory trouble. His family found him, and they gave us all this to thank us.”
Hearing this, no one on the tractor doubted him.
After all, everyone knew Yun Linhai’s financial situation perfectly well.
They could only sigh that Yun Linhai’s family had such good luck—why hadn’t a good thing like that happened to them? “Oh, I haven’t seen half this fruit before. I wonder what it tastes like. Lin Hai, there’s loads there. Pass a bit over for your sister to have a taste, go on.”
You could tell instantly that this was one of the shameless ones. Cai Jinhua immediately elbowed her way over to Yun Jiao’s side.
Father Yun’s face instantly darkened.
Cai Jinhua had a nerve asking. He hadn’t forgotten her spreading rumors that his Jiao Jiao was a worthless girl who’d only cost him money.
“There are too many of us in the family; it’s not even enough for ourselves.”
Cai Jinhua acted as if she hadn’t heard Father Yun’s quiet refusal. “How can it not be enough? You’ve still got plenty! Besides, how much can your little lads eat, let alone that young slip of a girl?
I’m not trying to tell you what to do, Lin Hai, but why are you raising this Yun Jiao and giving her better stuff than your own sons? If you ask me, that girl shouldn’t touch any of this.
She’ll just be marrying out eventually anyway. A daughter married is water spilled, they say—she’ll be someone else’s problem. What’s the sense in spoiling her? Especially since she ain’t even your real kin.”
Father Yun was absolutely livid at her words.
“Cai Jinhua, you keep quiet! This is my child, my daughter. What we choose to do has nothing to do with you!”
Yun Chendong covered Yun Jiao’s ears and whispered down to her, “Don’t listen, don’t listen. Jiao Jiao is our treasure, don’t listen to what she’s saying.”
Yun Chenxi had a more volatile temper and was nearly pointing his finger at Cai Jinhua’s nose to curse her.
“Hey… how dare you speak to your elders like that?”
Yun Chenxi shot back, “What sort of elder talks like that? Our proper family elders wouldn’t dare say that about Jiao Jiao, but you’ve got a terrible mouth on you. You don’t think much of your own daughter, yet you’re acting all high and mighty about mine.”
The people around them looked on, ready for a spectacle. Although they also felt the Yun Linhai family was too good to Yun Jiao, what Cai Jinhua said was certainly nasty.
Cai Jinhua couldn’t talk her way out of it against three of them, so she simply sat down and started acting the victim, loudly shouting that Yun Linhai’s family was bullying her.
Even the rumbling of the tractor wasn’t louder than her shouting.
In this situation, a man who couldn’t stoop to acting out and causing a scene was at a bit of a disadvantage.
“Daddy, have some. Brothers, have some…”
Yun Jiao peeled an orange, shared segments with the three of them, and then pulled them down to sit.
“Sit down, watch the show.”
She peeled another orange, handing out the segments one by one to the other people on the tractor.
Yun Jiao, of course, had her own little plan for picking the oranges.
They got a snack, even if it was just one tiny segment, and it was sweet.
People are reluctant to speak ill of those who feed them, so everyone else looked at Yun Jiao with kind smiles.
In the end, Yun Jiao only ignored Cai Jinhua, sitting with her father and brothers, eating in small bites and staring at Cai Jinhua’s outburst.
She just wasn’t going to give her any, and it served her right!
The feeling of performing a solo act was too awkward, and Cai Jinhua quickly ran out of steam.
She stopped. Yun Jiao tilted her head, her bright, big eyes full of curiosity, and asked in a sincere tone,
“Aunty, why’ve you stopped? We’re not even back to the village yet.”
She hadn’t watched enough; humans rolling around on the ground were such fun.
“Ha ha ha ha…”
An aunty who often disagreed with Cai Jinhua started laughing, and the others quickly followed suit.
In the past, when people in the village argued and caused a scene like this, the fighting would only get fiercer and fiercer, with everyone trying to win.
They never thought it could end like this. That little girl Yun Jiao was so interesting, treating Cai Jinhua’s ranting like a performance.
“You little menace…”
Cai Jinhua was livid and started spewing insults without thinking.
The expressions of Father Yun and his two sons instantly changed.
“Cai Jinhua, shut up!”
