- Chapter 10 - Vulnerability Period
The air was scorching hot, each breath feeling like a knife slicing through the nasal passages and trachea.
The scene before her was chaotic and disorienting, stirring boundless irritation. Her nerves throbbed with pain, as if someone were tugging at them intermittently, leaving her unbearably restless.
Ji Liao clenched her teeth and turned over, pressing the heel of her palm against her temple.
“Ji Liao!” Someone knocked urgently on the door outside. “Ji Liao! What’s wrong with you?”
Ji Liao’s thick lashes trembled slightly before drooping listlessly again, veiling most of her calm eyes with a hint of cold gloom.
The restlessness and agitation clung to her relentlessly, a fierce thirst rising in her throat.
For no apparent reason, Ji Liao felt a surge of irritation, her destructive urges flaring as hostility toward everything around her intensified—until a sweet lychee scent drifted into her nostrils, the searing lava-like torment momentarily soothed by a light drizzle.
So sweet…
Unable to resist, Ji Liao lifted her gaze toward the source of that refreshing pheromone. Her mind was a muddled haze, her consciousness far from clear, and driven by instinct, she got out of bed and seized Mu Shenshen’s wrist.
“Ah!” Suddenly pulled toward the bed, Mu Shenshen let out an involuntary cry, the hammer and screwdriver in her hands clattering to the floor and cracking two tiles.
Mu Shenshen tumbled onto the bed she had rested on the night before, her hair—soft and glossy like seaweed—spilling across Ji Liao’s pillow. The sweet lychee scent intertwined with a faint floral fragrance, forming an intoxicating, addictive aroma that filled the entire room.
Ji Liao hovered above Mu Shenshen, unconsciously leaning closer, wholly reliant on instinct to draw in the scent she craved.
Mu Shenshen’s chest rose and fell rapidly, the corners of her eyes tinged with a delicate flush.
Already nearing her Heat period, the Alpha’s pheromones easily provoked the hidden turbulence within her, and Mu Shenshen had long yearned for Ji Liao’s scent…
“Ji Liao.” Arms as tender as lotus roots wrapped around Ji Liao’s neck as Mu Shenshen breathed shallowly and rapidly, nuzzling against her with a teary, pleading whimper.
So delicate…
Amid the chaotic waves of desire, Ji Liao’s hands roamed every inch of smooth skin, finally sinking her teeth into the imagined sweetness of “fruit flesh.” It was indeed refreshingly sweet and delicious, its juices were enough to quell the restless thirst.
…But wait, had she forgotten something?
The thought flickered briefly in Ji Liao’s mind before sinking into the depths of desire, vanishing without a trace.
All Ji Liao remembered was the fragmented, swaying light of that night, reflected in tear-filled, clear eyes like falling stars.
Wrapped in the cool, lychee-scented pheromones, Ji Liao’s taut nerves relaxed, the tormenting thirst replaced by an indescribable satisfaction. As long as this Omega was by her side, the Vulnerability Period didn’t seem so unbearable after all.
Omega… Wait, Omega?!
Ji Liao abruptly sat up, the force causing the spring mattress to bounce.
The thin summer blanket slid down, revealing the young Alpha’s body—marked with scattered kisses and bite marks. Ji Liao hastily pulled the blanket back up to her chest, turning in alarm to see the soft, delicate Omega sprawled across her bed, her curls spread over the sheets and pillows, her flawless, dazzlingly white shoulders and back exposed. The lingering pheromones in the air and the finger marks on the Omega’s waist blatantly revealed what had transpired in this bedroom.
Ji Liao’s pupils trembled, and she instinctively took a step back.
The Omega let out a soft hum, her eyelashes fluttering as if she were about to wake. Ji Liao immediately froze in place.
After sitting stiffly for a moment, confirming that Mu Shenshen had fallen back asleep, Ji Liao exhaled quietly in relief. Her gaze swept across the room, only then noticing the complete disarray of her usually tidy bedroom—clothes strewn everywhere, undergarments tangled together, the air thick with a scandalously intimate scent that made her cheeks burn.
Ji Liao covered her face in dismay.
What the hell had happened?!
She had taken in an Omega, only to mark her during her Vulnerability Period… What kind of scumbag behavior was that?
What should she do, what should she do—what should she do?!
Should she send her away? But wasn’t it too late now? The Omega already bores her mark.
Besides, kicking her out right after sleeping together would be downright despicable, wouldn’t it?
But she hadn’t meant for this to happen. Maybe she could make it up to her. Right—what could she even offer as compensation? Think, think fast—what could she give this Omega?
“Mmm… What are you doing?”
Long, waist-length black hair was caught between slender, pale fingers, lightly twirled.
Mu Shenshen, still drowsy and dazed, lay against the pillow, lazily playing with Ji Liao’s hair.
…Mu Shenshen was awake. Ji Liao stiffened instantly.
“So tired…” Mu Shenshen murmured.
Ji Liao sat rigidly, not daring to respond, listening to the rustling of sheets behind her before a warm, soft body pressed against her back.
Mu Shenshen’s silky hair spilled over her, cool against her skin—ticklish.
The sensation was the opposite of the scorching heat of her skin.
The curves of Mu Shenshen’s body were transmitted unmistakably through nerve endings, pressed so closely against her that Ji Liao could feel her own heartbeat accelerating wildly.
“Aren’t you tired?” Mu Shenshen asked, leaning against Ji Liao.
Ji Liao’s mind was a tangled mess, thoughts scattering—what was she even asking?
Fortunately, Mu Shenshen didn’t seem to expect an answer. After resting against Ji Liao’s shoulder for a while, she sleepily brushed aside Ji Liao’s long hair with delicate fingers, nuzzling her nose against the back of Ji Liao’s neck in an intimate, almost coquettish manner.
“Let me bite you,” she murmured.
Ji Liao’s shoulders tensed abruptly, the predatory urge toward the Omega behind her stirring once more.
Her Vulnerability Period wasn’t over yet—she couldn’t withstand such teasing from an Omega she was already bonded to. In a daze, she even entertained the fleeting thought of locking Mu Shenshen in her room and never letting her leave.
“Huh?” Mu Shenshen, suddenly gripped by the shoulders, blinked in confusion at Ji Liao.
Meeting those clear eyes, Ji Liao’s fingers burned as if scalded, and she immediately released her. Hastily grabbing a robe from the floor, she threw it on and stood with her back to Mu Shenshen.
“?”
The sudden emptiness beside her filled Mu Shenshen with an indescribable void and unease. Her drowsiness faded, replaced by irritation as she frowned.
“Where are you going now?” she demanded.”I…” The Alpha with her back to Mu Shenshen paused, half-turning her head to reveal a sliver of her face beneath the curtain of her long hair. Her voice was cool and steady as she said, “I need to step out for a moment.”
Mu Shenshen’s expression darkened, her usually clear cat-like eyes flashing with icy intensity. “Are you planning to leave right after sleeping with me?”
If this little Alpha turned out to be that kind of scum too… then she’d simply have misjudged her character.
She wouldn’t mind adding fuel to the rumors already swirling outside, making sure this little Alpha was thoroughly ‘ruined.’
Ji Liao, oblivious to Mu Shenshen’s shifting mood, remained with her back turned, her ears burning hot, her mind fixed on the words ‘sleeping with.’ Her voice stumbled as she replied, “I-I… just can’t stay in the same room with you right now.”
Mu Shenshen blinked, tilting her head slightly.
Her cat-like eyes sparkled with playful cunning as she lifted a hand and lightly poked Ji Liao’s waist. “What did you say?”
Ji Liao flinched away, spinning around to press herself against the wardrobe by the bed, as if desperate to put distance between them.
Ji Liao’s flustered, bashful demeanor finally broke Mu Shenshen’s composure, and she couldn’t resist teasing her further. Slender, plush legs slipped out from under the covers, her fair foot arching as her rounded toes traced a light path up Ji Liao’s thigh. “…Are you scared of me?”
Ji Liao knew full well Mu Shenshen was toying with her, but that didn’t stop the instinctive blush or the racing heartbeat.
Watching Ji Liao’s flustered reaction, Mu Shenshen couldn’t help but burst into laughter, turning her head away.
Ji Liao glared at her in exasperation, only to find the Omega lounging carelessly against the sheets, barely covering herself. The curves of her body and the lingering marks of their night together were half-hidden, her long legs sprawled shamelessly—an image of decadent allure.
Instinct flared again, forcing Ji Liao to avert her gaze, lifting a fist to cover her lips.
Once her laughter subsided, Mu Shenshen wiped the tears from her eyes with a curled finger, then flopped back onto the bed with a playful whine. “I don’t care. You have to stay with me. You have to take responsibility—my heat period isn’t over yet.”
Her tone was coquettish, as if it were the most natural demand in the world.
Ji Liao hesitated, lips parting slightly.
Mu Shenshen caught the brief pause and immediately lifted her head, eyes narrowing. “What? Are you trying to refuse?”
Ji Liao frowned but stayed silent.
Mu Shenshen instantly sat up, turning her back to Ji Liao as she gathered her long hair, exposing the nape of her neck—still marked with vivid red bite marks. “Look! This is your mark! Your pheromones haven’t even faded yet! You bit me so hard last night—I told you to stop, but you kept going! And now you want to pretend it never happened? Mmmph—?!”
Ji Liao had never moved so quickly in her life.
Kneeling on the bed, one hand braced against the mattress, the other reaching over Mu Shenshen’s shoulder to clamp over that soft, reckless mouth, Ji Liao slumped forward in utter defeat.
Her dark hair pooled in a small circle on the sheets as she hung her head, exhaling in resignation. “Fine. I got it. Whatever you say.”
“Perfect,” Mu Shenshen chirped, her earlier pout replaced by a bright smile as she turned to face Ji Liao. “Now let me bite you back.””What?” Ji Liao looked up, asking in surprise.
“What? Are you the only one allowed to bite me, and I can’t bite you back?” Mu Shenshen retorted righteously.
Ji Liao didn’t actually object; she just couldn’t understand why this was necessary.
“Oh, I get it,” Mu Shenshen turned her face away, crossing her arms, “You just don’t want to. That’s fine, but last night you were in your Vulnerability Period. Who knows what might have happened without my pheromones to calm you down? You were so irritable last night, not gentle with me at all. Look at this mark on my leg, it’s…”
“Stop talking!” Ji Liao covered Mu Shenshen’s mouth again, powerless. “Do whatever makes you happy.”
Mu Shenshen’s eyes curved as she crooked a finger at Ji Liao.
Ji Liao: “…”
Despite her immense reluctance, Ji Liao had no choice but to sweep her dark hair to one side and lower her head as Mu Shenshen wished.
When warm lips touched her skin, rather than pain, what flooded Ji Liao’s mind were other… inappropriate thoughts. Memories she thought had faded with the receding instincts of her Vulnerability Period began stirring restlessly…
“You marked me, so you have to stay with me forever,” the Omega behind her suddenly spoke.
“What?” Ji Liao snapped back to awareness, turning to look at Mu Shenshen. She had planned to leave City C as soon as possible—how could she possibly stay with someone indefinitely?
Though this would be somewhat unfair to Mu Shenshen… but was there really no room for negotiation?
“I don’t care,” perhaps sensing Ji Liao’s hesitation, Mu Shenshen wrapped herself tighter in the thin blanket, lazily yawning with an utterly dependent and defenseless air. “If you don’t take me in, those people will catch me again to work off my debts. Those bad Alphas would force me to do all sorts of things. Who knows what might happen to someone as pretty and adorable as me?”
Ji Liao: “…”
Even as Ji Liao could list five, six, seven, eight, nine inconsistencies about Mu Shenshen in her mind at that moment, the imagined scene of Mu Shenshen being captured by shady characters and forced to work still infuriated her.
She was such a beautiful, whimsical Omega after all…
Even a one percent possibility made Ji Liao uncomfortable.
When Mu Shenshen tired herself out and fell asleep again, Ji Liao dressed in her pajamas and left the bedroom.
Closing the bedroom door quietly, Ji Liao walked to the balcony window and dialed a number buried at the bottom of her call history.
Gazing expressionlessly out the window, her voice as calm and detached as when she first met Mu Shenshen:
“Hello, Qin Su? I’ve changed my mind.”
