- Chapter 15 - Preview Episode
The production team worked with impressive efficiency.
All celebrity guests arrived in the morning, and the crew quickly filmed some footage. By the afternoon, the preview episode for the trial broadcast was already live on the app and website.
Fruit TV’s ability to stand firm in the domestic market for so many years—even expanding its influence—was no accident. They clearly had their own philosophy. Although A Moment of Affection, this dating reality show, had been teasing fans and audiences repeatedly before its official release, when it came time to air, there was no delay. The pacing was dialed up to the max.
Today, they whetted appetites; tomorrow, they would dive straight into the official live broadcast.
Ji Liao sat in the studio prepared for the celebrity guests, watching the preview on her phone.
On screen, San Yang and Zhu Linchen made their appearances first, and the reactions were relatively calm at this point. But when Cheng Mi appeared, Ji Liao’s phone screen was nearly flooded with adoring comments—”Baby Mi, let mommy kiss you,” “She’s so adorable,” “Goddess Mimi, go for it!”—until the moment Zhu Linchen shook hands with Cheng Mi and exaggeratedly overreacted. Then, the barrage of comments turned into a sea of “HAHAHAHA.”
Ji Liao smirked slightly, already guessing what Zhu Linchen was trying to do.
Looking at the lineup of four celebrity guests plus one host in A Moment of Affection, the others either didn’t meet the requirements or were too high-profile to approach. Cheng Mi was indeed the best choice—an easy way to gain some attention without any real effort, practically a freebie. Why pass it up?
Next, Qin Ming made his entrance. Though veteran actors couldn’t compete with traffic stars in terms of hype, audiences still showed respect. The screen filled with praise—until Ji Liao’s Alpha appeared. Then, the tone of the comments took a sharp turn.
Holy crap, I was waiting for this trash r*pist. Are the people at Fruit TV dogs? How could they let someone like this into the show? Laughing my ass off, do they not care about tanking their ratings?
Confirmed: this person has connections. Confirmed: capital favors Alphas.
Wait, doesn’t anyone else find this terrifying? Being on the same show as someone who once harassed you? I’d be scared out of my mind.
To the person above, I didn’t get it at first, but now I do. That r*pist really deserves to die.
Ji Liao watched these comments scroll past with an indifferent expression, calmly observing as her own hand appeared on screen. She raised an eyebrow in mild surprise before realizing—even if it was just to tease the audience, they had to show something real.
A slender, elegant hand gripped the car door, the tendons faintly visible. It was beautiful in a way that inexplicably made one’s heart itch, carrying a restrained yet intense tension that struck deep.
!!!
Holy—holy—holy—
Wait, who is this? Not gonna lie, that hand is gorgeous. Can I borrow it for a hand model gig? (dog emoji)(rose emoji)
You’re insane. That’s literally the r*pist’s car. Whose hand do you think you’re talking about? Don’t be disgusting.
Seeing the comments veering toward outright fighting, Ji Liao decisively dragged the progress bar forward, skipping ahead. Just as the director had said, there were no more shots of her afterward—just the other four celebrities interacting. The pacing was well-handled, each person’s role and dynamic clearly defined, with small comedic moments sprinkled throughout. Yet, the comments never stopped arguing, demanding that the production team show more of Ji Liao.
However, until the teaser ended, not a single shot of Ji Liao appeared again in the video. When the playback finished and the app automatically jumped to the comments section, the top comment was unsurprisingly about Ji Liao once more.
A comment reading, “Is your production team protecting a rapist?” was glaringly pinned at the very top, while the second most popular comment said, “Can’t handle the heat?”.
Ji Liao lowered her head with a faint smile, finding it rather meaningless. Just as she was about to put her phone away, the assistant director called out to her, “Teacher Ji, come over here to check your positioning.”
Ji Liao handed her phone to Wu Zi and walked over as instructed.
“Although our show is broadcast live, there still needs to be some structure, especially for tomorrow’s debut—it’s absolutely crucial. Teacher Ji, please pay close attention to your positioning. See, the cameras in the studio are initially set up here—make sure not to step out of frame.”
Ji Liao glanced over and memorized the positions of the cameras.
Qin Ming, lounging on the sofa with his elbow propped up as he scrolled through his phone, chuckled and said, “Ji Liao’s positioning really is the most important right now. Netizens are digging for any clue about what she actually looks like—that ten-minute teaser has practically been analyzed to death.”
Ji Liao cast a calm glance in his direction, but before she could react, the director raised a megaphone toward the sidelines and scolded, “Hey, who gave Teacher Qin his phone? Quick, take it away—don’t let him lurk online anymore!”
Qin Ming dodged with a protest, “What? No way, I’m not giving it—”
Zhou Yun stood by the edge of the studio, arms crossed, staring at him.
Qin Ming: “…”
The assistant successfully confiscated his phone. Meanwhile, Ji Liao followed the director’s instructions and took her seat on the designated sofa. The director watched through the monitor and nodded approvingly. “Yes, yes, just like that—this entrance shot will look perfect. Nailed it in one take. Excellent work, Teacher Ji.”
Ji Liao gave a slight nod before leaning back into the sofa, no longer paying attention to anyone else.
The director probably assumed that, as a composer who usually worked behind the scenes, she wouldn’t be too familiar with filming procedures. In reality, back when Cheng Mi was still competing in survival shows, Ji Liao had been the one overseeing everything off-camera.
Back then, Qin Su had made her stance clear: If it’s a composer who can both act and sing participating in an event, I’ll send a whole team to support them. But if it’s just some unremarkable amateur trying to break into the industry, then sorry—I don’t have time to indulge them. Come talk to me after you’ve clawed your way out of the trainee pool.
At the time, Cheng Mi had burst into tears upon hearing such blunt, cutting words. Ji Liao, however, had remained unfazed.
If Qin Su won’t send people, then I’ll do it myself. It’s not a big deal.
And so, she had accompanied Cheng Mi all the way—through debut, a breakout single, and an endless stream of variety shows and acting offers. By then, she had become intimately familiar with the filming processes of most projects.
…But reminiscing about this now was clearly affecting her mood. Ji Liao decisively cut off the train of thought and turned her attention to the script while waiting for the director to guide the others.
One of the show’s initial selling points was its fast-paced format—filming would wrap up in just over ten days, and once it was done, she could return to Mu Shenshen.
She just hoped that in her absence, Mu Shenshen wouldn’t end up blowing up the apartment.
“Seeing so many people slandering you over baseless accusations—does it upset you?” Qin Ming tilted his head slightly in her direction and asked quietly.
Ji Liao glanced indifferently at Qin Ming, showing little interest in his words. “I don’t really care,” he said.
Qin Ming raised an eyebrow, turning to study Ji Liao’s calm expression as the latter quietly reviewed the script. He didn’t seem to be stubbornly putting on a front—just speaking his mind. Qin Ming couldn’t help but admire inwardly: To remain so unfazed, this kid is truly gifted.
Emotionally steady, born to thrive in this industry.
Not far away, the production team was directing other artists. San Yang was actively going through the rundown, while Cheng Mi, who had been cooperating with the staff to find her position, suddenly turned her head and gave Ji Liao a deep look.
Ji Liao seemed to sense it and looked up as well.
Cheng Mi wore a large, pale butterfly hairclip, her sweet and adorable style unchanged from two years ago. When she turned to glance at him, her expression was still that same innocent, heart-melting look.
Ji Liao suddenly remembered the first time he had reunited with Cheng Mi during university. Back then, she had been drenched from the rain, looking just as pitiful.
He couldn’t recall what had first made him fall for her, but even if he could, what did it matter now? Things between them had already reached this point.
Ji Liao lowered his head again.
Their gazes abruptly disconnected, leaving Cheng Mi stiff and stunned, her expression a mix of surprise and disappointment. After a brief pause, she noticed Qin Ming’s meaningful stare and immediately flustered, averting her eyes.
The rehearsal progressed quickly. The artists tested their positions, ran through the script, and that was about it.
Since it was a live broadcast, an overly detailed script wouldn’t be much help—on-site surprises relied more on the production team and the guests’ quick reactions. After roughly going through the entrance sequence, the team prepared to wrap up.
The director stepped to the center of the set and clapped his hands, addressing the artist guests. “Everyone, if I may have your attention—although your teams have already received the detailed schedule, let me reiterate just in case. The first phase of our show will be filmed in City C, with subsequent locations changing unpredictably. To preserve the element of surprise, even you won’t know the full shooting plan in advance.”
“Wow, your team is really going all out,” Zhu Linchen teased.
The director chuckled and continued, “Tomorrow marks the first day of filming, with our civilian guests officially joining. After their initial interactions, they’ll proceed to the first round of affection selection, matching with their ‘One-Day Couple’—that day’s chosen partner. Then, the ‘Journey of Affection’ segment begins, where the matched pairs complete small activities arranged by the show.”
“Please note,” he added, “during this process, aside from reacting and commenting on the civilian guests’ actions, you’ll also need to stay alert for unexpected situations. If a civilian guest request help from a Love Consultant, you’ll decide who steps in. Additionally, every evening, we’ll have a ‘Love Advice’ segment, where the Love Consultants listen to the matched couples’ concerns and offer guidance. So, please observe the civilian guests’ interactions carefully during the day.”
“That’s no easy task,” San Yang remarked with a laugh. “Good thing I’m just the host—scares me just thinking about it.”
“Ah, having celebrities and ordinary people react randomly like this is just asking for trouble,” Qin Ming said with a smile.
Cheng Mi sat on the other side, remaining silent.
“Hahaha, exactly. Ordinary folks aren’t as camera-savvy, who knows if something might go wrong,” Zhu Linchen chimed in casually, trying to smooth things over.
Ji Liao lowered her lashes, her gaze fixed on the script in her hands, her expression indifferent.
Seeing no objections, the director clapped his hands to dismiss everyone, adding, “Don’t forget about the dinner gathering tonight, everyone. Feel free to join if you’re available.”
—After all, most of them were celebrities who had to watch their diets.
Though Ji Liao didn’t restrict her eating, she wasn’t fond of noisy environments and had little interest in such events. Without any intention to attend, she headed straight out of the venue with her script, planning to return to her hotel first.
After leaving the studio and passing through the outer facilities, she reached a quiet, dimly lit corridor when someone suddenly called her name softly—
“Ji Liao.”
Ji Liao paused mid-step. It was Cheng Mi’s voice.
