- Chapter 5 - Sleepwear
That Omega was still going to cause trouble.
When Ji Liao had taken the Omega in, she hadn’t thought things through. It wasn’t until bedtime, when it was time to shower, that she remembered her current apartment only had one bathroom. Moreover, aside from the clothes on her back and the coat she’d used to shield herself from the dust, the Omega had no other belongings.
An Alpha and an Omega stood awkwardly outside the bathroom. Mu Shenshen looked up at Ji Liao with innocent eyes and asked, “Can I borrow a set of your clothes to wear as pajamas?”
…An Alpha’s clothes would carry traces of their pheromones. For an Omega to wear an Alpha’s clothes was no different from marking territory—such an intimate act usually only happened between lovers or partners.
Ji Liao frowned but said nothing.
“If you won’t lend me any,” Mu Shenshen lowered her eyes at just the right moment, her expression downcast, “then I’ll have to sleep naked tonight.”
Ji Liao: “…”
By the time she realized the issue, most nearby stores were already closed. If she wanted to go to a shopping mall, the nearest one was half an hour away, not to mention the buses had long stopped running at this hour.
Ji Liao felt a headache coming on. For the first time, she regretted renting such a remote apartment.
Mu Shenshen gave Ji Liao a pitiful once-over, then made to step into the bathroom. “Then I’ll just—”
Ji Liao grabbed Mu Shenshen’s arm, but only held it for a brief moment before letting go. “I’ll get you something. Wait here.”
With that, Ji Liao walked away, leaving Mu Shenshen standing there, watching her retreating back thoughtfully before lightly touching her own arm.
The wardrobe against the wall was filled with Ji Liao’s everyday clothes—T-shirts, hoodies, button-ups, and trousers, without exception.
Ji Liao frowned as she picked through them, finally selecting a loose-fitting top and pants to give to Mu Shenshen.
When she handed over the clothes, the Omega behaved quite properly, though her expression seemed a little shy. Ji Liao immediately felt uncomfortable and retreated to her room, shutting the door behind her.
Ji Liao’s hearing was too sharp, and the apartment’s soundproofing was terrible. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she could faintly hear the sound of running water from the bathroom.
The scent of lychee seemed to drift into her nose again. Ji Liao knew this was just a hallucination caused by her glands reacting to stimulation. She squeezed her eyes shut, grabbed the noise-canceling headphones from her desk, and put on some soft music, completely blocking out the outside world.
The familiar, soothing rhythm took over her hearing, and Ji Liao’s breathing gradually steadied.
This was what she liked to do when her emotions were unstable.
She disliked losing control. Only by staying rational could she make the best decisions. Useless emotions solved nothing—whether they were stirred up by Cheng Mi or this Omega.
Ji Liao sat in the hanging basket chair. Even as it swayed gently, she remained composed and upright.
Though taking in Mu Shenshen had been unplanned, she couldn’t afford complications. It was just a small act of kindness, offering temporary shelter. She still needed to stick to her original plan—terminate the contract, find someplace to stay, or perhaps accept her teacher’s offer to help with work…
A soft knock sounded at her bedroom door.
Ji Liao’s eyes snapped open. It took her a moment to soften her gaze before she removed her headphones and went to open the door.
Mu Shenshen stood outside, the ends of her hair still damp, her cheeks tinged with a faint, adorable blush.
“I’m done. You can use the bathroom now.”
Mu Shenshen looked up at Ji Liao.
Ji Liao was about ten centimeters taller than Mu Shenshen and usually preferred loose-fitting styles. Her T-shirt on Mu Shenshen was truly oversized.
…Perhaps because the shirt was long enough, Mu Shenshen wore only the top, leaving her fair legs exposed to the air, showing even more than when she had worn a short skirt.
Ji Liao silently raised her gaze, looking past Mu Shenshen’s shoulder. “Mm. You should rest first, then.”
“Alright.” Mu Shenshen seemed a little disappointed as she headed toward the guest room.
Ji Liao exhaled in relief, lowering her lashes as she picked up her clothes and walked to the bathroom. The moment she opened the door, steam rushed out, enveloping her entirely. An indescribable sense of ambiguity seemed to cling to every tiny droplet of moisture—elusive yet undeniably unsettling.
Frowning, Ji Liao lifted her eyes and inadvertently glanced at the hook on the wall. Noticing something hanging there, she looked over indifferently, only to freeze in shock the moment she realized what it was.
A delicate piece of clothing was slightly damp at one corner. Its owner probably disliked crumpling clothes, so the color and material were unmistakably clear.
Ji Liao swiftly averted her gaze, paused for a moment, then stole another glance—disbelieving and stunned.
Even the peripheral glimpse made Ji Liao flinch as if burned. Flustered, she covered her face with the back of her hand, thinking in a panic:
…How could she wear something like this?!
That flimsy scrap of fabric hung there, flickering in and out of Ji Liao’s mind.
Stuck at the bathroom door, Ji Liao didn’t know whether to look or not. Whether out of irritation or something else, her bl00d pressure spiked.
Feeling an unusual dizziness, Ji Liao stiffly turned around, took a deep breath to steady herself, and walked to the guest room door, knocking.
Mu Shenshen wasn’t the least bit surprised by the knock.
In fact, she had been waiting for that little alpha to come knocking.
Uncrossing her long legs, Mu Shenshen leisurely walked to the door and opened it with a sweet, tilted smile. “Yes?”
Ji Liao glanced down at the feigning-innocence omega and stepped aside slightly. “You left something in the bathroom.”
“Did I?” Mu Shenshen put on a surprised expression. “Oh dear, I thought I checked everything.”
Watching Mu Shenshen’s exaggerated act, Ji Liao felt numb inside.
“Then I’ll go get it.” Mu Shenshen strode toward the bathroom, the T-shirt she wore as pajamas swaying with her steps. Ji Liao immediately raised her gaze a notch higher, fixing it on the clock in the living room, keeping Mu Shenshen out of her line of sight.
Soon, Mu Shenshen returned, clutching something in her hand, looking genuinely embarrassed.
Ji Liao’s eyes darted away, pretending not to see.
“I’m so sorry…” Mu Shenshen also seemed ashamed, avoiding Ji Liao’s gaze as she lowered her head slightly, cheeks flushed. “I can’t believe I left something like that in the bathroom. I’m really sorry.”
What exactly is “something like that”…?
Ji Liao had a headache, feeling like today had been surreal. First, this omega’s explanation only made things worse. Second, her own mind was far too active, conjuring up all sorts of nonsense.
“You’re not angry, are you?” Mu Shenshen twisted her fingers together, looking a little uneasy.
Ji Liao’s heart was ashen, her face wooden. “No need.”
Mu Shenshen’s eyes rippled slightly, as if filled with guilt. “But I still feel so bad. Maybe you should let me do something, otherwise I’ll keep feeling uneasy.”
Ji Liao took a quiet breath.
Wasn’t this person supposed to be embarrassed? Then why hadn’t she returned to her own room? Why was she still holding that… that thing while talking to her like this?
“It’s fine, it’s already so late,” Ji Liao glanced lightly at Mu Shenshen, her tone flat despite the turmoil inside. “Go to sleep first, don’t think about it anymore. It’s nothing.”
Having said that, Ji Liao left Mu Shenshen behind and walked straight into the bathroom without a sideways glance.
Not daring to check whether Mu Shenshen had left, Ji Liao pushed the bathroom door shut and lowered her head. Her black hair cascaded like a waterfall over her shoulders, cool strands brushing against her arms.
How did it come to this…
Ji Liao exhaled softly, feeling the abnormal heat on her face, her mind in complete disarray.
She shouldn’t… How could she keep losing control in front of that Omega?
Not long ago, she still had an Omega she liked and missed. And she had only known this one for half a day, spent just a few hours together at most. How could she…
Mu Shenshen’s figure flashed through Ji Liao’s mind, but she immediately cut off the thought, refusing to dwell on it.
With a grim expression, she turned and turned on the faucet. Cool water sprayed down as Ji Liao tugged at the hem of her T-shirt, pulling it off with one hand and tossing it into the laundry basket. Her well-fitted pants soon followed, kicked aside with her foot.
Stepping under the water, the cool stream flowed over her overheated skin, tracing the smooth contours of her shoulders and back, the slight dip of her spine, and the curve of her waist, gradually carrying away the excess warmth.
Ji Liao finally calmed down. She cupped water to wash her face, then swept her wet hair back, tilting her head up to let the water pour over her closed eyes.
How could she be attracted to that Omega?
That Omega was noisy, loud, and self-centered. Always talking to herself, acting recklessly, of unknown origin, full of mysteries, and… Ji Liao’s mind flashed to Mu Shenshen’s legs, pale and dazzling under her short skirt, recalling how Mu Shenshen had pulled her hand to touch them…
And so shameless!
Ji Liao was furious, wiping her face roughly. How could she possibly be affected by such cheap tactics!
It must all be because of the pheromones.
As long as that Omega didn’t release them again, it would be fine…
It had to be fine.
“Are you not done yet?” A soft voice called from outside the door.
Ji Liao startled, stepping back in the bathroom and turning toward the entrance.
A slender shadow was cast on the frosted glass door, knocking lightly as if worried. “Your face was so red when you went in earlier. Are you really okay?”
Ji Liao stared at the silhouette in silence.
The light outside was still on, dutifully illuminating Mu Shenshen from behind, casting her figure clearly and completely onto the door.
Ji Liao’s gaze accidentally swept over the shadow, freezing for a moment. She struggled to hold back but eventually slumped in resignation, pressing a hand to her face against the wall.
All that effort earlier had been for nothing.
Her mind was a mess again.
