- Chapter 6 - Opening the Door
Ji Liao leaned against the bathroom wall, utterly baffled by the absurd thoughts flooding her mind.
Just an Omega. Sure, Mu Shenshen was exceptionally beautiful, but was it really that serious?
Had it truly come to this?
“Are you okay?” Mu Shenshen’s voice called from outside.
Ji Liao: “…”
Knocking on the bathroom door, Mu Shenshen adopted a sweet, gentle tone, masking the playful smugness on her face.
The little Alpha liked to act all composed, didn’t she?
Well, she wanted to see just how long this little Alpha could keep up the act.
“Aren’t you coming out yet?” Mu Shenshen teased in a soft, coquettish voice.
With a click, the doorknob turned, and the door suddenly swung open, revealing Ji Liao in her bathrobe.
Her long, damp hair was swept back, draping over her robe and leaving a trail of moisture. A few loose strands clung to her cheeks, framing her striking features. Her expression was indifferent, her cool gaze settling on Mu Shenshen like morning mist…
Mu Shenshen froze for a moment, her eyes unconsciously following a droplet of water as it slid down Ji Liao’s jawline, tracing the elegant curve of her neck… the smooth line of her collarbone… pausing briefly in the hollow before disappearing beneath the overlapping collar of her robe.
This was… something.
Mu Shenshen swallowed unconsciously.
Watching Mu Shenshen stare at her with such blatant hunger, Ji Liao’s heart skipped a beat, and she nearly stepped back to slam the door shut.
Was this Omega not even going to pretend?!
…It must be the Heat period. The Heat period’s influence. She couldn’t take it personally. She shouldn’t take it personally. Ji Liao lowered her eyes, repeating the mantra in her head like a brainwashing chant.
“What do you want?”
After a pause, Ji Liao finally looked at Mu Shenshen and spoke.
“Oh…” Mu Shenshen reluctantly tore her gaze away from Ji Liao’s collar, her mind so preoccupied with indecent thoughts that she couldn’t even bother putting on an act. She seemed distracted. “Nothing, just checking if you were okay.”
Ji Liao: “…”
What kind of childish game was she playing with this Omega? If it was nothing, why knock?
Mu Shenshen, however, remained oblivious to Ji Liao’s irritation. Instead, her eyes sparkled with anticipation as she asked, “Can we sleep together tonight? I won’t go to your room—you can come to mine.”
“…”
Ji Liao fell silent. In that silence, she felt her bl00d pressure skyrocket as if launched by a rocket—sudden, abrupt, and entirely unanticipated.
“Can we?” Mu Shenshen pressed.
“No,” Ji Liao grounded out through clenched teeth.
“Ah…” Mu Shenshen pouted, disappointed. “But what if I get scared at night? Omegas are naturally timid, you know.”
Ji Liao stayed quiet for a moment before stiffly replying, “Then don’t be scared.”
“Huh?” Mu Shenshen blinked, unwilling to let it go. “But fear isn’t something I can control. I just… mmm.”
It was a fair point.
Ji Liao knew halfway through that she had no rebuttal, but there was no way she could share a room with Mu Shenshen.
In that brief moment, Ji Liao instinctively chose the simplest solution—she covered Mu Shenshen’s mouth to stop her from continuing.
Mu Shenshen blinked again. “Mmm?”The memories came flooding back, and Ji Liao was genuinely afraid that Mu Shenshen’s mouth would run wild again. She immediately let go, averted her gaze, adjusted her bathrobe, and made an excuse: “I haven’t finished showering yet. If there’s anything… we can talk later.”
Mu Shenshen’s thoughts derailed upon hearing this. Her gaze slid down and lingered on Ji Liao, her voice gradually softening: “Then… maybe we could—”
Ji Liao froze for a moment, then immediately frowned. The look of helplessness on her face vanished, her eyes clearing as her tone turned icy: “What?”
Mu Shenshen was jolted awake by the coldness in her voice, realizing she had misspoken.
It was one thing to subtly tempt Ji Liao—this little alpha would probably assume it was her own problem. But if she were to blatantly flirt and make her intentions obvious, Ji Liao would undoubtedly kick her out.
“I didn’t say anything!” Mu Shenshen denied instantly, covering her mouth before turning and running away.
Ji Liao gripped the door handle, watching Mu Shenshen flee, then pressed her palm to her forehead with a headache.
…What kind of mess was this?
Closing the bathroom door again, Ji Liao washed up quickly, this time keeping her mind clear of distractions. She hurried back to her room, afraid Mu Shenshen might get another impulsive idea and knock on her door again.
But Mu Shenshen behaved surprisingly well, staying quiet and refraining from any more sneaky antics.
Ji Liao sighed in relief.
If they could maintain this balanced distance, it wasn’t entirely unbearable. She couldn’t be bothered to figure out what Mu Shenshen was really after—after all, she’d be leaving this city soon.
Might also consider it a good deed before her departure.
With a calm mind, Ji Liao drew the curtains and lay down on the bed.
But perhaps due to the lingering Omega pheromones, Ji Liao found herself dreaming—a rare occurrence.
In the dream, she hadn’t yet signed with Tianying Entertainment. She was still a high school student, sitting by the window, idly twirling a pen in boredom. Just as she was zoning out, Cheng Mi, two years her senior, abruptly entered her line of sight.
Cheng Mi walked past her classroom door, her square-toed leather shoes stepping through the bright sunlight. It was as if the entire summer’s greenery had condensed into the hem of her plaid skirt.
As young Ji Liao stared at Cheng Mi in a daze, Cheng Mi tilted her head slightly, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Her gaze naturally landed on Ji Liao—paused—then curved into a warm, radiant smile.
Gentle. Healing.
Utterly beautiful.
Ji Liao unconsciously furrowed her brows and murmured, “…Senior.”
Mu Shenshen, who had quietly slipped into Ji Liao’s bedroom and was already kneeling on the bed, froze.
What was this little alpha saying?
She leaned in to listen, but Ji Liao didn’t speak again, only frowned more deeply.
The youthful dream shattered into fragments, the scenes chaotic and messy. Memories Ji Liao didn’t want to recall mixed in, and her overly sensitive ears seemed to catch faint rustling sounds…
Unable to bear the disturbance, Ji Liao opened her eyes—only to meet a pair of clear, alluring cat-like eyes.
Ji Liao jolted in shock, propping herself up and scrambling back. “What are you doing here?” she demanded.
As she moved, the thin blanket slipped slightly, tugging at the collar of her plain white round-neck pajamas and exposing the smooth lines of her collarbones and youthful frame.Mu Shenshen’s gaze lingered for a moment before she suddenly lunged forward, planting her hands on either side of Ji Liao’s waist.
Ji Liao, who had been bracing against the bed to avoid her, froze mid-motion. Staring at that breathtakingly beautiful face suddenly appearing so close, she was momentarily speechless.
Mu Shenshen propped herself up on her arms, her clear eyes slowly welling with tears as she pouted pitifully from mere inches away. “I’m really scared… Just let me stay here, okay?”
Scared? Scared of what? Ji Liao stared at Mu Shenshen’s face, feeling slightly dizzy. The questions she should have immediately demanded answers to got stuck in her throat.
“Mm…” Mu Shenshen whimpered softly before abruptly tilting her head and curling into Ji Liao’s arms.
Ji Liao stiffened, instinctively catching her—
So soft.
The first thing Ji Liao registered as she held the warm body against her was how soft she was. Warm, pliant, and carrying the sweet fragrance of lychee.
Lychee sweetness…
“Ji Liao…” The Omega in her arms shifted, docile and tender.
Ji Liao numbly registered the presence of the Omega in her embrace when a sudden coolness brushed against her collarbone—as if someone’s fingertip had lightly traced over it, fleeting and teasing, like the flick of a cat’s tail.
“…Why is your heartbeat so fast?” The Omega’s voice was soft, almost like the seductive whisper of a ghostly enchantress from an old Hong Kong film.
Ji Liao snapped back to reality, realizing her pulse was pounding so loudly it roared like thunder in her ears.
How could this be happening?!
Almost instinctively, Ji Liao shoved Mu Shenshen away and sprang to the edge of the bed, backing up several steps as if to prove something, her hand hitting the windowsill.
“Hey!” Mu Shenshen, caught off guard, tumbled into Ji Liao’s bedding. She shot her an annoyed glare.
“What are you doing here?” Ji Liao, regaining some clarity, hardened her voice. “Didn’t I say you’re not allowed in my room?”
Mu Shenshen’s irritation faltered, replaced by a guilty look as she rubbed her wrist. “I… I was really scared.”
“Scared of what?” Ji Liao frowned.
“I… I’m scared of the dark,” Mu Shenshen admitted sheepishly.
Ji Liao pressed her lips together, ultimately refraining from harsh words. “It’s the middle of the night. An Alpha shouldn’t be sharing a room with an Omega nearing her Heat period.”
With that, Ji Liao didn’t even glance at Mu Shenshen before striding toward the bedroom door.
“Ji Liao!” Mu Shenshen, thoroughly exasperated, pushed herself upright. “Even if you leave, I’ll follow you! I’m scared of the dark—wherever you go tonight, I go!”
Ji Liao’s hand on the doorknob stiffened.
“Are you still leaving?” Mu Shenshen’s aggrieved voice came from behind her.
Ji Liao paused, exhaled slowly, then let go of the handle and turned back into the room, settling into the hanging basket chair. “Fine. Do whatever you want. I’m staying here tonight.”
Mu Shenshen blinked. “Y-you’re not coming to bed?”
After all this commotion, Ji Liao was wide awake. She shot Mu Shenshen a flat look. “Are you going to sleep or not?”
Mu Shenshen, who had never endured the slightest hardship in her life, bristled with indignation. She grabbed the blanket and yanked it over herself, flopping onto the bed with exaggerated force. “Fine! I’m sleeping!”
Ji Liao opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but ultimately swallowed the words back down. The room fell silent for a few seconds before the Omega’s voice sounded again, tinged with grievance: “Ji Liao… this whole place smells like you.”
Obviously, Ji Liao thought, pinching the bridge of her nose with her eyes closed. It’s my bed.
Silence settled over the room once more. After what felt like an eternity, just as Ji Liao was drifting back to sleep, she heard the rustling of blankets—Mu Shenshen seemed to have rolled over with her pillow and changed sleeping positions. Originally, the hanging basket sofa had been positioned at the foot of the bed, but now, with just a slight turn, Mu Shenshen could see her.
“Ji Liao,” Mu Shenshen spoke again, her voice soft, “You don’t have to be so proper, you know.”
“…Are you going to sleep or not?” Ji Liao asked.
“What if I don’t want to?” Mu Shenshen countered, her tone teasing.
“Then do some physical training,” Ji Liao replied coolly. “Go downstairs and run twenty laps. You’ll want to sleep once you’re tired.”
Mu Shenshen: “…”
The threat seemed to work. The bed fell still again, and Mu Shenshen appeared to burrow deeper into the blankets, saying nothing more.
