- Chapter 9 - Who's Unsafe?
“This movie is rather boring.”
After watching for a while, Mu Shenshen propped her chin on her hand while sipping juice through a brightly colored plastic straw that twisted around the rim of the glass.
Ji Liao quietly watched the television, the screen’s images reflected in her eyes: “Is it?”
“You like it?” Mu Shenshen turned to Ji Liao, her gaze noticeably brighter than when she’d been watching the film.
“It’s alright,” Ji Liao actually didn’t care either way. The film’s lighting was somewhat dim, the story rather depressing—Ji Liao was nearly falling asleep. “Do you want to switch to something else?”
“No need,” Mu Shenshen’s eyes shifted, as if implying something deeper. “This film has surprisingly high ratings.”
Ji Liao: “Hmm.”
Though she couldn’t understand why the ratings would be high.
Ji Liao continued watching the movie quietly, her expression focused, while Mu Shenshen—who had suggested watching it—seemed distracted, frequently glancing at Ji Liao. She swung her slender, pale legs thoughtfully as she studied Ji Liao.
Her red lips pursed around the straw, teeth lightly biting into it again and again, leaving uneven tooth marks.
Occasionally, Ji Liao would turn and meet her gaze, momentarily surprised before looking away.
She wasn’t particularly sensitive to Mu Shenshen’s movements, nor did she want to seem like some pervert who obsessed over every little thing, so she focused entirely on the movie. But then the film’s direction started feeling off too…
On screen, the two female leads finally reunited after being apart for some time. Under the gloomy lighting, their eyes met in silence.
In the background, rain continued falling beyond the wooden eaves. One of the women was drenched, her bangs clinging to her face in wet strands. She should have been freezing, yet she paid no mind, gazing sorrowfully at the other woman as if her eyes held endless words.
The next moment, the woman standing deeper in the cabin lifted a hand to her collar. With a light tug, her coat slid off her shoulders.
Ji Liao: “…?”
The woman didn’t stop. After removing her coat, her fingers moved to her buttons, undoing them one by one while maintaining eye contact with the other woman.
Ji Liao: “???”
Ji Liao’s gaze jerked away from the screen as if burned.
“Oh my,” Mu Shenshen’s voice whispered beside Ji Liao’s ear, light and playfully seductive. “They’re doing it.”
Ji Liao’s brow twitched.
Mu Shenshen’s voice was like a feather, brushing lightly against her ear.
Mu Shenshen leaned toward Ji Liao, bracing herself against the couch.
The distance between them was intimate, yet their bodies didn’t touch. Ji Liao frowned uncomfortably but didn’t know what to say.
She couldn’t bring herself to voice anything too blunt.
Mu Shenshen smiled, tilting her head as she looked at Ji Liao with an innocent expression.
“You…” Ji Liao averted her eyes. “Don’t get so close.”
“Hmm?” Mu Shenshen deliberately stalled, glancing down at the space between them. “Is this close?”
Somehow, Ji Liao’s mind automatically replayed last night—when Mu Shenshen had climbed onto her bed, pressed close, her eyes glistening faintly. Even the sweet lychee scent seemed to linger at the edges of her senses again.
Ji Liao immediately grew restless, her entire body tensing. She shifted away, putting more distance between them.
Mu Shenshen relentlessly pursued Ji Liao, who felt every nerve ending in her body hyper-sensitive, acutely aware of the ambiguous warmth radiating from Mu Shenshen onto her skin… Just then, the suggestive gasps and splashing sounds from the TV grew louder—the two female leads had now moved their encounter to the bathroom.
Ji Liao glanced at the screen, her breathing instantly faltering. She reached for the remote to turn it off. “Let’s watch something else.”
A warm hand pressed against hers, pushing the remote back into place.
That hand was smooth and delicate, its fingertips soft as a baby’s cheek, the touch so tender it could melt hearts.
Ji Liao turned abruptly, meeting Mu Shenshen’s clear, bright eyes.
“Are you scared to watch?” Mu Shenshen asked softly, her gaze unwavering.
Ji Liao stiffened, momentarily lost in Mu Shenshen’s beautiful, limpid eyes.
“Ah, I see…” Mu Shenshen suddenly propped herself up on the sofa, kneeling to lean closer, her captivating eyes never leaving Ji Liao. “Could it be… you like me a little too?”
“I—” Ji Liao tried to retreat but was blocked by the armrest, half her body tilting precariously.
Mu Shenshen’s eyes were dazzling, brimming with confidence and boldness, making it impossible not to be swayed by her words… Meanwhile, the two on-screen refused to quiet down, their breathy moans unrestrained.
Unable to bear it, Ji Liao turned her face away, squeezing her eyes shut.
Noticing Ji Liao’s reaction, Mu Shenshen curved her eyes in a sly smile. She knew no Alpha could ignore her. This Little Alpha had been avoiding her all day—she couldn’t let this opportunity go to waste.
Eyes closed, Ji Liao felt her heartbeat quicken for a fleeting moment. With near-dread, she forcefully suppressed the chaotic emotions rising within her.
…This had to stop.
Another indecent sound escaped the TV. Ji Liao opened her eyes, her expression darkening as she glared at Mu Shenshen.
Unfazed, Mu Shenshen tilted her head, her smile radiant.
Ji Liao: “…”
Still pinned beneath Mu Shenshen, Ji Liao wanted to get up but hesitated to physically push her away.
“Turn that movie off,” Ji Liao demanded.
Mu Shenshen ignored her, instead lightly tracing Ji Liao’s cheek. “The mood is perfect right now. Don’t you want to do something?”
Ji Liao froze, her expression turning icy. Her previous concessions hadn’t been an invitation for Mu Shenshen to push further.
Ignoring Mu Shenshen’s words, Ji Liao braced herself to create distance between them, brushing past Mu Shenshen’s hair as she stood and moved to the single sofa. She grabbed the remote, swiftly exiting the playback, then flicked on the living room lights.
Bright light flooded the room. Mu Shenshen, caught off guard, raised an arm to shield her eyes.
“…Are you mad?”
After a long silence, Mu Shenshen—uncharacteristically nervous—lowered her arm slightly, peeking cautiously at Ji Liao. Her delicate beauty, paired with that pitiful look, was undeniably disarming. Unfortunately, Ji Liao wasn’t in the mood to indulge her.
“Did you pick that movie on purpose?” Ji Liao asked flatly.
“Huh?” Mu Shenshen put on an impeccable look of innocence. “How could that be? I just thought that movie seemed like it would help me sleep.”
“Is that so?” Ji Liao stood there quietly, her gaze calm. “You’d better tell me the truth right now.”
Mu Shenshen froze, her brows furrowing as her tone immediately turned fierce. “What do you mean by that? Are you interrogating me?”
She stood up angrily, her emotions vivid and intense, her clear eyes brimming with accusation. The deliberately obedient and ingratiating expression she had been faking vanished completely, revealing the unmistakable demeanor of a spoiled young lady.
Ji Liao wearily lowered her eyelids and sighed softly, her questioning tone light but pointed. “Then tell me, why did you suddenly show up at my place? And why does it have to be me? This area is so unsafe that no Omega would come here alone. Why did you come? How did you even know about me?”
“I…” Caught off guard, Mu Shenshen was left speechless, thoroughly stumped by Ji Liao’s questions.
This time, however, Ji Liao seemed unwilling to give her an out. As Mu Shenshen struggled to answer, Ji Liao remained silent, and a heavy quiet settled over the room.
Mu Shenshen stood rigidly in place, subjected to Ji Liao’s composed yet piercing gaze. She felt as though she had been completely seen through—every one of her attempts at seduction, every little scheme… even the faint restlessness she had felt in Ji Liao’s bed, enveloped by her pheromones.
An inexplicable sense of humiliation rose from her feet, swiftly overwhelming her entire being.
Her full curves, barely concealed by her thin camisole, rose and fell twice as she turned her head away and bit her lip. Her beautiful long hair obscured her eyes as she muttered under her breath, as if talking to herself, “How can an Alpha be this hard to pursue?”
Ji Liao was taken aback. “What?”
She couldn’t understand Mu Shenshen’s words, and the tone worried her—it sounded like she was about to cry.
Do Omegas cry this easily?
“And you’re asking me why?” Mu Shenshen suddenly turned back, tears welling in her eyes, and shouted, “I just want you! I want you to mark me, so I ran away from home to find you! What’s wrong with that?!”
Ji Liao froze again, her mind bizarrely stalling for a moment. After a brief daze, she finally processed what Mu Shenshen had said and felt a wave of absurdity wash over her. “What did you say?”
“I said,” Mu Shenshen glared at Ji Liao, “I! Want! To! Sleep! With! You!”
Ji Liao opened her mouth but couldn’t string together a coherent thought amidst the chaos in her mind. She stood there, detached and indifferent, as if completely removed from the situation.
Mu Shenshen had no time to consider what Ji Liao was thinking. She had already laid her cards on the table, and given Ji Liao’s personality, if she didn’t get her way today, it would all be over!
She took a step forward, roughly hooked her arms around Ji Liao’s neck, and closed her eyes as she pressed her lips against Ji Liao’s.
The tears that had welled up in her eyes from humiliation dampened her long, curled lashes, pooling briefly in the hollows of her eyes before tracing a faint, glistening path down her flushed cheeks.
The sweet, clinging scent of lychee enveloped them both. At the sight of that single tear, Ji Liao’s hands, which had instinctively moved to push her away, stiffened mid-motion.
Then, a slick tongue pried open Ji Liao’s lips, delivering an even deeper, more intense sensation straight to her.
Ji Liao’s mind buzzed with a sudden static, her usually sharp senses short-circuiting all at once.
She couldn’t hear clearly, couldn’t see clearly—only the sweet fragrance of lychee lingered at her nose, the warmth of another’s touch in her palm, and the person whose lips met hers… tasted unbearably sweet.
“Mmm… ah.”
Mu Shenshen suddenly sucked in a sharp breath, the sound so close it snapped Ji Liao back to reality. Instinctively, she pulled away slightly.
Mu Shenshen frowned, pressing a fingertip to her lips before shooting Ji Liao a look. With a spoiled pout, she complained, “You were so rough. You bit me.”
“…” Hearing Mu Shenshen’s words, Ji Liao’s gaze trembled, her breathing uneven as she looked over—only to see Mu Shenshen’s lips flushed and glistening, a small cut marring her plump lower lip.
“!” Ji Liao immediately released her hold on Mu Shenshen’s waist and back, stumbling back two steps in panic.
Her mind was still foggy, but as she stared at Mu Shenshen, only one thought looped endlessly—What have I done!?
The sudden emptiness beside her made Mu Shenshen widen her eyes. “What, are you trying to back out now?!”
“I…” Ji Liao hadn’t fully regained her senses yet, clenching her empty hand in confusion, too afraid to meet Mu Shenshen’s gaze. “That was my fault just now. I… I’m sorry.”
“Sorry?” Mu Shenshen looked even more stunned. “Why are you apologizing? You kissed me. Your hands were all over me—”
Ji Liao abruptly covered Mu Shenshen’s mouth, her ears burning red.
She couldn’t quite recall everything she had done, but judging by how lost she had been in the moment, it couldn’t have been anything decent.
“Stop talking,” Ji Liao muttered, avoiding eye contact.
“I won’t,” Mu Shenshen yanked Ji Liao’s hand away. “You kissed me! You even bit me! You can’t just pretend it didn’t happen!”
Ji Liao fell silent for a moment, conceding that Mu Shenshen had a point.
This situation needed to be resolved. She hadn’t thought things through when she let Mu Shenshen into her home, leading to all this… They couldn’t keep living under the same roof.
“This place isn’t safe. I’ll rent another apartment for you—I’ll cover the cost,” Ji Liao said to Cheng Mi, her tone steady. “Let me know if you have any other requests.”
Mu Shenshen blinked. “…Huh?”
“We can’t keep living together,” Ji Liao said seriously, looking at Cheng Mi. “It’s too dangerous.”
“So what you’re saying is—” Mu Shenshen gritted her teeth, her slender, pale finger pointing at herself, “—you want me to leave?”
Ji Liao hesitated before answering, “Yes. Living together isn’t safe.”
“What isn’t safe? For who?” Mu Shenshen’s expression turned icy. “I don’t feel unsafe at all. Admit it—you just don’t want to do it with me, right?”
Ji Liao tried to explain, “I can’t just casually mark an O—”
But Mu Shenshen cut her off coldly, “Is it because of Cheng Mi?”
Ji Liao froze, snapping her head up to stare at Mu Shenshen.
Mu Shenshen’s expression darkened, her beautiful eyes sharp and ruthless. She didn’t even know why she was pressing the issue—originally, she had just wanted someone to help her through her heat period. Who Ji Liao had feelings for shouldn’t have mattered… Yet somehow, Mu Shenshen found herself caring anyway.
“She’s your senior? If I remember correctly, she’s also an Omega, right? Wasn’t she the one who got you into this mess? What, you’re still thinking about her?”
Ji Liao’s breath hitched.
Mu Shenshen had indeed seen those rumors.
Of course. Nowadays, anyone who uses the internet would probably know about this.
Ji Liao really didn’t want to explain her feelings and choices to anyone again. She restrained herself and turned away. “Enough. Go pick a neighborhood. I’ll help you move tomorrow.”
“Ha.” Mu Shenshen laughed in anger. “I really didn’t realize you were this well-off.”
“That’s none of your concern,” Ji Liao said wearily, lowering her eyes. “Just pick one. If I said I’d do it, I will.”
“I don’t want any of it!” Mu Shenshen wasn’t having any of it. She grabbed Ji Liao’s arm and turned her around to face her. “I only want you! Can’t you understand that?”
Ji Liao: “That’s impossible…”
Mu Shenshen’s tone turned aggressive. “I don’t care! If I say it’s possible, then it is! We’re doing it now.”
Ji Liao frowned. Given the current situation, it seemed she and Mu Shenshen were completely at an impasse.
Ji Liao: “Forget it.”
Mu Shenshen was taken aback. “Forget what?”
“I’ll find you a good place,” Ji Liao said, wrapping an arm around Mu Shenshen and firmly pushing her toward the guest room. “I’ll help you move tomorrow.”
“What? I told you I don’t— Hey?”
Mu Shenshen was shoved into the open doorway of the guest room. Stumbling a couple of steps, she turned around just in time to see Ji Liao pulling the door shut.
Holding the doorknob to prevent Mu Shenshen from turning it, Ji Liao steeled her heart and locked her inside.
Mu Shenshen pounded on the wooden door from inside, her voice furious. “Ji Liao! How dare you treat me like this!”
Ji Liao remained silent. She picked up a nearby clothes hanger, considering using it to barricade the door, but hesitated and let go. It wouldn’t be good if Mu Shenshen couldn’t get out in an emergency.
“Ji Liao! You bastard!”
The voice grew slightly more distant from the door. Ji Liao sighed and chose to retreat to her own room, locking the door tightly behind her.
With the door locked, noise-canceling headphones firmly in place, and Mu Shenshen effectively separated from her, Ji Liao finally sat on the edge of her bed, allowing herself to regret her earlier actions.
How could she have done that? With an Omega she’d only known for barely a day…
Ji Liao bent over, pressing her forehead into her hands, not daring to dwell on it.
It’s fine… it’s fine. As long as she got Mu Shenshen settled tomorrow, this would all be over. No more trouble.
Ji Liao thought she should feel relieved, but for some reason, her mind refused to calm down. Images kept flashing through her head—Mu Shenshen’s tear-streaked lashes, her playful, catlike smile, that domineering vitality…
After tossing and turning countless times, and when even the guest room had fallen silent, Ji Liao finally sat up and removed the earplugs.
With her breathing erratic, noise rushed in like a tidal wave. The moment the clamor flooded her mind, it felt like a string inside her snapped.
The moment she caught the scent of her own pheromones, Ji Liao knew things between her and Mu Shenshen were far from over.
…Because of that kiss… her Vulnerability Period had come early.
