The Great Sage Who Did not Remain in Legend - 6.3
Afterward, he bought plenty of souvenirs and treats for himself in town before heading back to the capital.
“Take care. Seems like monsters have been increasing lately.”
“If they’re tasty monsters, I’ll hunt them, so no worries. Well then, old man, I’ll come around this time next year. Stay alive until then.”
“Don’t say such unlucky things.”
Thinking the old man’s blood vessels might burst any moment, he left the fishing port town.
On his way back, he made a slight detour, heading towards a direction with a river off the main road. His target: ducks. He planned to catch waterfowl gathering in the gentle currents of the Wand.
“Oh, there they are.”
Mergin approached quietly, ensuring there was no one around.
“Alright, no one’s here. Paralyze!”
He cast a paralysis spell towards the ducks, then used wind magic to draw them towards him.
Without letting them suffer, he swiftly used a dismantling spell to process them.
With this, he got all the ingredients he needed for duck hotpot. Objective accomplished. Should he buy vegetables from the farming village he visited on the way back? Mergin waited until nightfall before heading back along the main road; if he walked back after making a detour, he’d have to camp along the road.
He was running at a speed much faster than a carriage, and there were fools camping in remote areas. Although the road was relatively safe, there might be monsters, and thieves might lurk too…
It bothered him, but it was all his responsibility. Should he just run through without getting involved in trouble? Just as he was thinking that, he sensed the presence of monsters approaching.
“Oh, looks like I’m being targeted after all. These footsteps are probably from wolves or hellhounds.”
I have no obligation to help. But, it might be good to call out.
Mergin shouted from outside the tent.
“Hey!”
“Ahhhhhh!”
Ugh, it’s a woman in there.
“Sorry to startle you. Looks like you’re being targeted by wolves or hellhounds. Prepare for battle.”
“Huh?”
“Huh, not. If you’re camping out in a place like this, you should be prepared for monsters. There’s a small group of about five, so it’s not in your favor to run away. Do your best to fight and survive. Bye.”
“Wa, wait.”
A young girl with traces of childhood remaining popped her face out of the tent.
“What is it? I’m in a hurry, so if you have something to say, say it quickly.”
“Umm, it’s impossible.”
“What is?”
“If there are five wolves or hellhounds, I have no chance.”
“Huh? You’re camping out here. Aren’t you confident enough to scatter them?”
“It’s impossible.”
She shouted from outside the tent.
“I see… Can’t be helped.”
“Will you help me?”
“That’s impossible.”
“What are you talking about? You’re a man, aren’t you? What do you mean, leaving such a cute little girl behind?”
She was desperate.
“Hey, look at me.”
In the darkness, the girl strained her eyes to look closely at Mergin.
“Have you figured out that I’m unarmed? I have no weapons to fight with, and even if I did, I wouldn’t be good at it.”
“What would you do if you were alone?”
“I’d run away. I’m confident in my speed. Well then, if we meet in the next life, I’ll say hello.”
“What, what are you talking about?”
When the girl was half crying, the wolves approached them as they were chatting with each other.
“Ah, I’m being targeted after all. This presence is from wolves or hellhounds.”
