The Great Sage Who Did not Remain in Legend - 7.1
“Yikes~ The wolves are here!”
With that, the girl retreated into the tent.
Mergin considered just leaving her and running away.
However, looking closely, the wolves seemed quite thin. Unlike monsters, wolves were animals with strong caution. They might attack humans if intruded upon their territory in the mountains, but coming out onto the highway like this was unusual.
Were they driven out of their territory by something?
The wolves hesitated to attack Mergin, who showed no fear. If they didn’t attack him, he had no intention to attack them either.
“If I give them something, they might go somewhere.”
Mergin searched his item box. It was filled with items from his days with the Hero’s party. He looked through the list in the item box.
“Ah, this should work.”
He took out the meat of a seal-like monster that he didn’t eat due to its strong flavor and fat. He divided the large piece into five parts and tossed them in front of the wolves.
“Here, take this and go. But if you still attack, I’ll kill you.”
The wolves growled and took a cautious stance without moving forward. Even if hungry, they remained wary of food thrown by a stranger…
Although cautious, the wolves glanced at the meat. They could tell if it was edible by its smell. They might leave this place with meat in their mouths, but there was still a possibility they might attack the tent.
“Hey, do you have a pot?”
Mergin called out to the girl inside the tent.
“Ah, yes.”
“Lend it to me. I’ll scare them away with some noise.”
Only the pot emerged from the tent, which he took and banged loudly with a stone.
The wolves flinched; it seemed to be effective.
“Look, take the meat and go over there. Otherwise…”
He advanced with the pot, intimidating them.
The wolves took the meat and disappeared.
“It’s okay now. They ran off scared by the noise.”
“R-really?”
“See for yourself. Well then, I’m leaving.”
“W-wait!”
“What now? I drove off the wolves, didn’t I?”
Checking for any presence, Mergin headed deeper into the forest.
“What will you do if they come back?”
“Bang the pot.”
“But they might get used to it and not run away next time.”
“I don’t care. Now…”
“D-don’t leave me behind!”
“Jeez…”
“Hurry up and pack the tent. We’re preparing to run to the next town.”
With that, she hurriedly started packing the tent. She seemed to have quite a load; could she keep up running?
“O-oh, sorry to keep you waiting. My name is…”
“No need for introductions or thanks. I don’t intend to introduce myself either. We’ll part ways once we reach the next town.”
“Y-you should at least greet someone properly!”
“Shut up and let’s go. If monsters come next time, you won’t escape just with noise.”
“Yikes!”
The girl turned pale, astonished, as Mergin started running. He slowed down to a speed she could keep up with, but with her heavy load, she could only trot after him.
“W-wait… wait for me…”
Thud!
The girl tried desperately to run but tripped on a stone and fell. Mergin used night scope magic, so he could see clearly, but she couldn’t see much at all.
