The Great Sage Who Did not Remain in Legend - 47.3
“Well, I know a lot because I’ve met various people. I’ve been taught about monsters, magic, swords, and other things.”
“What about people’s feelings?”
“I have a high magic power and all types of magical aptitude. My physical abilities are also high. But this isn’t the result of my efforts; it’s just something I was given by chance.”
“Are you saying it’s a gift from the gods? That’s unfair…”
“I think it’s unfair too. But there are things I can’t do. I regret not doing things differently back then. It’s too late now, and I regret not putting in the effort.”
“What couldn’t you do?”
“I couldn’t help the people I wanted to help. Even though I can do various things, I couldn’t help those I wanted to help. I could do a lot, but I couldn’t do what I really wanted.”
…
…
…
“Did they die?”
“Yeah, they died at a young age.”
“That’s unfortunate…”
“Yeah, it was too soon, really…”
After a moment of silence,
“I like people who work hard at what they want to do. I respect them. My dad is one of them, and all the Star’s Guidance are like that.”
“Do you really understand that just from meeting them?”
“I can tell by looking at the things my dad made. You can clearly see the spirit of a craftsman in them. Rikka and the others also fought in practice yesterday. It was obvious they had worked hard. You can’t achieve that level with just talent.”
“I get that my sister and Vanessa are hard workers, but Cisco is a lady, right?”
“Have you seen her hands?”
“I haven’t looked closely.”
“Her hands show the evidence of shooting arrows to the death. It’s proof of how hard she worked to have hands like that, even though she’s a lady. I joked about Rikka in women’s clothes, but that’s a beautifully trained body. How hard must she have worked to get there? I think Vanessa has been working hard to survive since she was little. That kind of movement might be a natural talent, but…”
“Effort, huh…”
“Yeah. I haven’t put in the effort, so even though I can do various things, I’m not impressive. It’s just a random result. I do think I’m stronger than Rikka and the others, but it’s not something I can be proud of or that anyone would respect. It’s just like a convenient tool.”
“A convenient tool?”
“Yeah, if I worked in this workshop, I wouldn’t need charcoal or bellows. The only material cost would be the materials themselves, and I could even gather those myself. I could melt materials with magic, pour them into molds, and polish them with magic, so I wouldn’t need a hammer or a whetstone. I could make cool-looking swords and sell them cheaply, which would be a good deal. Isn’t that convenient?”
“Y-yeah, that’s true.”
“But you see, most of this can be done with magic tools. However, the swords made by my dad aren’t like that. Those swords wouldn’t exist without him. Which do you think has more value?”
Rock fell silent.
“There is a demand for inexpensive, high-quality swords. In fact, most people would want that. But if that becomes the norm, eventually, the high-quality real swords will disappear from this world. Thinking about that is kind of sad, isn’t it?”
“Well, yeah…”
“Lock, you should think carefully about what you want to become. Sometimes it’s too late to regret not doing something differently.”
“I want to be a craftsman like my dad. But he doesn’t teach me anything, and he never says anything. Maybe I just don’t have any talent.”
