- The Great Saint Was Called to Heaven and Became the Adopted Daughter of the Baker
- Episode 1.1 - The Bakery's Poster Girl
In a slightly out-of-the-way spot just off the main street of the holy city of Santarika, there was a bakery. The small, clean, brick-built interior of the shop was always filled with the fragrant aroma of freshly baked bread. On the wall at the back of the shop, a sign with the saying “We deliver bread that helps bring happiness” was nailed up. These were the words of the previous owner who opened the shop. True to its name, the shelves were lined with bread
The current owner is a muscular and stern man. The bread he makes is so delicious that you might doubt if he really made it himself. It turns out to be delicate and finely textured.
It is bread that is loved not only by commoners but also by nobles.
The nobles and royalty wish for him to become their exclusive baker, but the stubborn old man never agrees. Even when asked to share his recipes, he silently kicks them out. He just continues to bake bread for the day and sells it to the customers who come to his shop. That’s all.
With my petite but spirited wife, we were running the shop together.
About a year ago, a cute girl started working there.
One day, a bold person who claimed to be the last of the master baker’s unique, secret bread-making techniques, suddenly appeared at the shop and, after kneeling for a week in front of the store, earned the position of apprentice.
With hair the color of silver-purple, reminiscent of purple petals wet with morning dew, and eyes of the same hue, the mysterious girl had a charming face with her features well-balanced on her small face. However, despite her cute appearance, her courage to outsmart the stubborn old man earned her applause and cheers from the guests.
Now, she has completely become the star attraction.
I have a cat with silver fur, which is considered the color of a goddess, and it greets me when I enter the store. Wearing a yellow hood on its head, it sways its loose silver-purple braids from side to side, with a dazzling smile that rivals even a white apron.
Thus, the bakery Deli Baredo in the holy city was bustling as usual today.
The sound of an old bell attached to the entrance door rings.
Ally, who was arranging freshly baked bread on the shelves installed in the store, looked up and smiled.
The navy-blue dress with the pure white apron looks stunning. Above all, the girl’s smile is dazzling.
Today, the poster girl is in top form again.
“Welcome!”
“Ally-chan, which one do you recommend today?”
The regular elderly woman, as if accustomed to it, offered the basket she had woven from wisteria, her eyes filled with anticipation.
Receiving the basket, I now point to the bread that has just been arranged.
“Hello, Mrs. Monbar. This is freshly baked. It’s a new creation from my father. We’ve used plenty of wild berries picked this morning, so it’s a sweet bread.”
“Oh, that looks delicious. The sweet aroma is enticing. Well then, I’ll take five of those and about ten of the usual round buns, please.”
“Okay. I’ll wrap it up for you now. How about the usual egg bread?”
“Well, it’s your husband who likes egg bread, but you know, it’s almost been a year since the great saint passed away, right? He hasn’t come home because he’s busy preparing for the memorial service. So, it’s fine for today.”
Madame Montbal’s husband was certainly working in a department that oversaw the ceremonies of the Grand Temple.
I see, it must be a whirlwind of busyness with the first anniversary of the Great Saint and all.
Pulling out distant memories, Ally was convinced.
“I see. Then, it will be 2100 Rika here.”
“Yes, yes. I’ll come back to buy it once that person’s work settles down.”
After receiving the money and filling the basket with goods, the lady smiled contentedly. The bread of Deli Baredo is the magical bread that brings smiles to customers—this is the selling point. It is derived from the bread that helped the happiness of the previous generation, the founder of the shop.
Ally felt a sense of fulfillment in her current job.
Thank you very much!
“Which face do you have to come back with?!”
Ally’s voice and the deep bass that came from the depths of her belly overlapped.
The lady, who had dramatically recoiled, cautiously inquired.
“Oh. Master, did something happen?”
“What is it?”
Staring at the door leading from the shop to the kitchen, I ended up exchanging glances with the lady.
The bakery owner is strict and feared by everyone. However, he is basically taciturn. He rarely raises his voice.
For a place to shake with such a loud voice, it must be something extraordinary.
You can also hear the voice of the shopkeeper’s wife trying to calm him down.
As I was observing the situation, a cat suddenly jumped in.
“Oh dear, didn’t Momo-chan get startled and run away too?”
“That old man is so noisy, I can’t stand it. You should do something about it.”
“No, no, calming Father’s anger is quite difficult, you know.”
“That’s right. Shouldn’t Ally-chan stay here too?”
It seemed that the words spoken to the cat Momo were thought to be a soliloquy. Mrs. Monbar frowned with concern.
Ally thought so too, but reality is harsh.
“We have a daughter now. You should just hurry back to your woman. Don’t ever set foot in this house again!”
I couldn’t help but hold my head in disbelief at the shopkeeper’s loud announcement.
Even if it’s a daughter, it’s still me, right?
