- Episode 1.10 (1) - Infiltration of the Temple
“Isn’t it difficult for the Imperial Guards to commit the crime?”
Without thinking, Ally spoke up.
There is no doubt that the cause of my death, or rather my near-death experience, is poison. I don’t know if it was put in my drink or if it was on the dishes, but the only ones who could have approached me are the court ladies. It would be difficult for the guards watching from the corner of the room to mix poison into my drink.
If we were to investigate, it would be the lady-in-waiting, but since I was alone in my room drinking tea that day, the person who brought the food is the most suspicious. However, if it were that simple, the culprit would have already been caught.
There will be no reason to go out of one’s way to suspect the Imperial Guards.
“Are you saying that you have no leads on the person who poisoned the High Priestess?”
“That’s right. During the year of confinement, I was interrogated many times, but in the end, they couldn’t figure it out. That’s why we are being tested now.”
“Huh, is that so?”
“You just said that one of us, the royal guards, is suspected of being the culprit. It’s not normal to exile everyone. They probably decided to let us go because we didn’t show any signs even after being locked up for a year. They want to find out who the mastermind behind the Holy Maiden’s death is, but I also believe that the royal guards are not the culprits. I haven’t seen the body, so I can’t guess who the culprit is, but there’s no way someone in the royal guards
“Of course!”
“However, the problem is that those in the upper echelons of the temple don’t think that way. For some reason, they believe the culprit is among the guards. As a result, they can’t find the culprit no matter how long they search. In other words, the culprit is likely among the upper echelons of the temple, manipulating the information.”
Rensol’s calm judgment of the situation is clear.
However, even if I understand that much, if I get expelled from the temple, I won’t be able to do anything.
“I suspect the saint. Someone among the high-ranking or mid-ranking Saint must have plotted to poison and replace the Grand Saint. It’s difficult to directly catch the person who mixed the poison. The upper echelons of the temple, who are supposedly desperate, haven’t caught them even after a year. Most likely, they are either on the run or have been killed. They wouldn’t be bold enough to stay in the Grand Temple for long. However, anyone with a motive still has a chance to become
At one point, cutting off his words, Rensol frowned.
“Just like that, there are those in the higher-ups who think the same way, which is why even after a year, they haven’t appointed a new High Saint and have left the position vacant. The higher-ups are not united either. That’s why I want you to enter the temple and investigate the Saint.”
“Um, well, I don’t really understand difficult things, but… what should I look up?”
“Of course, it’s the intention to become the next Saint and the reasons behind it. As long as the 89th Saint, who boasts the protection of the greatest goddess in history, is around, it would normally take about fifty more years for my turn to come. Since I’ve finally taken action but can’t get any results, she must be quite anxious. Various flaws will probably start to show.”
I realized that the temple was planning to work me to death. So, it’s not an exaggeration to say I ran away. I couldn’t endure a caged bird’s life, living like a doll. Even though I was alive, I questioned a life that felt dead.
Because I’ve come to know the taste of happiness.
However, it wasn’t an atmosphere where I could say I didn’t want to do it.
Why do I, the one who was killed (hypothetically), have to investigate the one who killed me (hypothetically)? Isn’t this usually something others do? I can’t help but think that, but when I see the pained look on the faces of the guards in front of me, my heart aches.
Within the temple, the royal guards are the elite. Especially if one is a royal guard of the High Saint, they are a figure of respect among all the holy knights. To be exiled like that is an event that turns heaven and earth upside down.
However, even if I investigate by myself, there’s only so much I can find out. And even if I do find out, what does Rensol intend to do with that information?
“Is it enough to just investigate and report?”
“Ah, that’s enough. The rest will be decided here. The saint has a one-year renewal system. If you serve for a year, you can return home.”
When I opened my mouth to reply, Milliardo spoke first.
“I am against it.”
“Just let the saints hear it, okay?”
“The saints are probably missing right now. Even if Ally is in danger, I can’t help her.”
Indeed, my brother-in-law was talking about that yesterday.
Apparently, the saints have disappeared due to the curse of the Great Saint or something like that.
He wants to protect his suddenly acquired stepsister; he is like a model of a bodyguard. He is broad-minded and kind. He was taciturn when he was a royal guard, but even though his words have become harsher, his character seems unchanged. In fact, I suspect he was taciturn because he couldn’t speak the temple language well.
“There’s no way the Grand Saint would cast such a curse, right?”
“I don’t believe in the Great Saint’s curse or anything. I’m just worried because she’s actually gone.”
“How about I send out some guards from my side as well?”
“Then, the guard should have investigated from the beginning.”
“Because the guards are men. They can’t really delve into the inner workings of the saints. That said,
I don’t have anyone I can recommend as a saint.
No matter how much my brother-in-law bites, it seems Rensol has no intention of backing down.
“Brother-in-law, thank you for worrying about me. But I’ll do it. I’m going to the temple as a saint.”
“Ally, why?”
Even if the High Priestess was poisoned, I thought the daily life of the Grand Temple wouldn’t change. I never imagined that the search for the culprit would be so difficult that the people who believed in me and followed me would be suspected until they were exiled.
At the age of six, I came to the temple and ate alone. I always kept my face hidden and spent time at a distance from people. My guards and maids are like family to me now because they took care of me closely. They might see it as just a job, or perhaps the young Ally was conditioned to feel that way.
As a result of my foolish actions, there are people who have become unhappy. Knowing this, I am not shameless enough to continue living my current life without a care, nor am I bold enough to do so.
In the first place, the Imperial Guards were trustworthy people in that cold temple. They always put their hearts into it and watched over me kindly. Although we hardly exchanged words, it is a fact that I felt at ease with them around.
If I can repay even a little, I should take action.
At this point, I want to thoroughly gather evidence that connects to the culprit who tried to kill me. That way, a new High Priestess will soon be chosen from among the Priestesses.
The Imperial Guards can return to their original positions. I know best how excellent they are because they protected me by my side.
“If I can be of any help to you, brother-in-law, I want to do my best. After all, you are such a cool paladin.”
Milliardo suddenly hugged me tightly. His arms squeezed me with all their strength.
“Brother-in-law?!”
“If you ever find yourself in danger, definitely call my name. No matter where you are, I will definitely come to help.”
The sound of his strong heartbeat echoed, enveloping her in a warm embrace, and Ally’s heart swelled to the point of wanting to cry.
