The Green Tea Supporting Girl Is Still Playing Her Role Today (GL) - Chapter 20
Chapter 20
On Tuesday morning, Wen Pinghan received a notice to attend a meeting led by the regional director, who had just returned from a business trip, to give feedback on the project.
When everyone heard the manager say the deal was secured, they all smiled in unison.
Wen Pinghan overheard two colleagues whispering nearby.
“The young lady is really impressive. She fired Wu Fangda right after parachuting in and took on such a big project, and she actually pulled it off.”
“Yeah, there were rumors her degree was bought, but now it seems that’s not entirely true. She’s got some real skills.”
Wen Pinghan subtly curled her lips, feeling oddly proud, though she also found it unbelievable. Someone so coy in private transformed into a different person at work.
This strange contrast once made her suspicious, but now it felt intriguing. Only interesting people were like this, she thought.
The regional manager assigned tasks and goals to each department. After the meeting, Wen Pinghan held another meeting with her team to make arrangements, spending the whole morning in meetings.
At lunch in the cafeteria, Lin Zhimin carried her tray, sat beside her, and complained about the team’s heavier workload. But no one grumbled because they all got bonuses this month and hoped for more overtime.
“Looks like we don’t hate overtime; we just hate overtime with low pay,” Lin Zhimin said.
“Exactly,” Wen Pinghan agreed.
“Thanks to the young lady. I’ll love her forever,” Lin Zhimin whispered loudly.
“…” Wen Pinghan blinked and suddenly asked, “The managers from the trip are back, but why haven’t I heard anything about Ms. Xie?”
“Hm? Didn’t you hear? Ms. Xie’s sick,” Lin Zhimin said.
“What?” Wen Pinghan looked at her, surprised, “Who said that?”
“The regional manager’s secretary’s friend, in the break room.”
…What kind of mysterious organization is the break room?!
“Is the news reliable?”
“No idea.”
To verify, Wen Pinghan messaged Xie Zhifei after lunch, but got no reply until near the end of the workday.
Xie Zhifei: [At home. No big deal, just a slight cold.]
Wen Pinghan: [Have you eaten?]
Xie Zhifei: [Ordered takeout. The maid’s off today.]
After finishing work, Wen Pinghan packed her bag, left the company, took a few steps toward home, then turned to the road, hailed a cab, and headed to the villa district.
Ding-dong, ding-dong—
When the door opened, Wen Pinghan saw a listless Xie Zhifei leaning against it, her face flushed. Wen Pinghan touched her forehead, “What’s your temperature?”
“It was 37 degrees at noon, but after a nap, it feels hotter,” Xie Zhifei said.
Wen Pinghan helped her to the sofa, where Xie Zhifei flopped down.
“Have you taken medicine?”
“Took some at noon. Can’t take more on an empty stomach.”
“I’ll make something to eat,” Wen Pinghan set down her bag, checked the fridge, and decided to cook noodles for speed.
Soon, fragrant scallion oil noodles were ready, without chili this time, but still tasty. Sadly, Xie Zhifei had little appetite, ate half, and whined, “Ugh, why get sick now? I really want to finish this bowl, really, Sister, believe me!”
“Eat what you can. Don’t force it,” Wen Pinghan said, washed the dishes, and boiled water.
While waiting, she asked, “How’d you suddenly get sick?”
“The weather there was crazy, my schedule was a mess, and the time difference got me. I caught a cold,” Xie Zhifei said, sneezing. She rubbed her face, glanced at her phone, saw her messy hair and pale, bare face, and wailed, “Ah! So embarrassing! I’m so ugly now!”
“Not ugly,” Wen Pinghan pulled away the pillow she used to cover her face, sat her up, and said, “Take your medicine.”
“Really not ugly?” Xie Zhifei lay like a salted fish, letting Wen Pinghan place the pill in her hand.
“Not ugly. You’re the prettiest person I’ve seen,” Wen Pinghan said.
“Really? I don’t believe you.”
“Don’t believe me then. If you don’t take your medicine, you’ll really get ugly. Being sick doesn’t look good,” Wen Pinghan teased.
Xie Zhifei obediently swallowed the pill.
Wen Pinghan handed her a water cup. Instead of taking it, Xie Zhifei leaned forward and drank from it in Wen Pinghan’s hand. Wen Pinghan tilted the cup higher for her.
Xie Zhifei tilted her head back, her jawline sharp. A drop of water slid from her mouth. Wen Pinghan grabbed a tissue and wiped it off.
“Rest early after the medicine. I should go,” Wen Pinghan turned to leave, but Xie Zhifei grabbed her wrist.
“Leaving already?” Xie Zhifei looked up, her pretty eyes shining like an abandoned kitten, “Stay a bit longer.”
Wen Pinghan felt her wrist shaken. After a moment, she sat beside her and asked, “What do you want to do?”
So direct? Xie Zhifei didn’t know what to do. At this hour, what could they do…
After thinking hard, she mumbled, “Maybe you should go.”
Wen Pinghan: “…”
“It’s late. I’ll have the driver take you home,” Xie Zhifei said.
“Okay, rest early too.”
“Got it,” Xie Zhifei wobbled to her feet, took one step, tripped over a teddy bear on the floor, mistook it for something, stumbled twice, crashed into someone, screamed, and pinned them onto the sofa.
They stared at each other.
Xie Zhifei gazed at the face inches away, stunned by Wen Pinghan’s beauty up close.
“Can you get up? You’re hurting me,” Wen Pinghan said, gasping.
“Oh, sorry!” Xie Zhifei looked down, realized she was pressing on her chest, making breathing hard, and stood up, apologizing, “Sister, I didn’t mean to.”
“I know,” Wen Pinghan, barely surviving, stood, patted her chest, and left.
Xie Zhifei watched her leave, patted her own chest, still feeling the soft sensation lingering.
The next day, Xie Zhifei went to headquarters to report the project’s progress to the board, earning approval. Xie Hongxu beamed with pride, saying humbly to others, “This is my daughter, just starting work. She needs more experience. Please guide her.”
After headquarters, Xie Zhifei returned to the branch, worked a bit, took medicine, felt sleepy, and napped on the sofa. Half-asleep, she sensed someone approach. She slowly opened her eyes and saw a figure walking away.
“Sister.”
The person at the door paused and turned, “Did I wake you?”
“No, I just woke up,” Xie Zhifei yawned, sat up, and asked, “Did you need me for something?”
“I heard you were at the company and brought you some fruit… How’s your appetite at lunch?” Wen Pinghan walked back and stood in front of her.
“Still no appetite,” Xie Zhifei opened the fruit salad on the table, smiled, and said, “Thanks, Sister. How’d you know I was here?”
“The mysterious organization told me.”
“Huh?”
“Nothing. Keep resting. I’m heading back to work,” Wen Pinghan smiled.
“Wait,” Xie Zhifei rummaged through her bag, “I got you a gift. Forgot to give it to you last night.”
“What?” Wen Pinghan felt flattered, not expecting her to buy a gift during a work trip. Before she could thank her, Xie Zhifei pulled out a self-defense stick.
Wen Pinghan: “???”
“It’s retractable, super portable,” Xie Zhifei eagerly showed off the stick, “It’s electric too. If any guy bothers you, zap him!” She nearly said Gu Zhizhang’s name.
Wen Pinghan: “…”
Thanks a lot.
