The Green Tea Supporting Girl Is Still Playing Her Role Today (GL) - Chapter 6
Chapter 6
After the meal, Gu Zhizhang offered to drive Wen Pinghan home, but she politely declined.
“I have some errands to run. Goodbye.” Wen Pinghan grabbed her bag, bid them farewell, and left.
Once she was gone, Gu Zhizhang slumped in his chair, slightly dejected, and sighed. “I feel like she’s hostile toward me.”
“Not hostility, caution,” Xie Zhifei said with a bright smile.
“Why? I don’t mean her any harm.” Gu Zhizhang was puzzled. Growing up, countless women had tried to get close to him. He was always the one rejecting others, never experiencing repeated rebuffs like this.
“When a strange man suddenly shows up, persistently being nice, unless she’s instantly smitten, she’d naturally feel some caution or resistance, right?” Xie Zhifei paused, then muttered, “Today’s resistance was especially strong. Weird.”
Logically, Gu Zhizhang had played the hero today, helping Wen Pinghan out of a jam. She shouldn’t be so averse to dining with him, even seeming overly sensitive. When he reached for a napkin near her, she flinched as if startled.
Like a frightened rabbit.
“Am I coming on too strong?” Gu Zhizhang asked.
“Yup.”
He thought for a moment. “So, what should I do?”
“Don’t come on so strong.”
“…” He sort of got it, but it felt like he’d asked for nothing.
“Let’s go. I’m heading out.” Xie Zhifei elegantly wiped her mouth, grabbed her bag, and left him sitting there pondering life.
Rarely out, Xie Zhifei decided to wander and relax. Her current way of unwinding? Shopping. Swiping her card felt so good!
Soon, her hands were full of shopping bags, her lonely heart instantly filled.
“Where to next?” She stepped out of the mall, scanning for her next shopping haven. Suddenly, her gaze locked on someone across the street. Smiling, she followed.
Wen Pinghan had just left the supermarket with a discounted bottle of body wash, yogurt, and some pork ribs. Meat was cheaper in the evenings, and if she got off early, she’d grab some.
Walking, she suddenly stopped and turned to look behind her.
“Hey, what a coincidence!” Xie Zhifei greeted with a radiant smile, meeting Wen Pinghan’s calm eyes before adding, “Sister~”
“…” Wen Pinghan turned and walked away.
“That’s not the way home. Where’re you going?” Xie Zhifei matched her pace.
“To eat,” Wen Pinghan said.
“Didn’t you just… Oh, I get it. You didn’t like that food, right?” Xie Zhifei grinned. “Same here, I didn’t like it either.”
Wen Pinghan glanced at her. “You ate it anyway?”
“My friend ditched me, and I ran into you guys. Fate calls for a meal together.” Xie Zhifei said smoothly. “What do you want to eat? Can I join?”
“Seafood okay?” Wen Pinghan asked, looking into her bright eyes.
“Totally!”
Xie Zhifei’s eyes lit up, happily following her… into a convenience store.
“?”
Wen Pinghan grabbed two instant noodle cups with shrimp and fish paste, prepared them, and set them on the table by the window. Under Xie Zhifei’s shocked and confused stare, she opened a fork. “Eat up.”
Xie Zhifei swallowed, holding her fork, and asked slowly, “Strictly speaking, only fresh shrimp counts as seafood.”
“Yup, this is shrimp.”
“…” Yeah, right. There’s not even a single shrimp in here!
Three minutes later, Wen Pinghan lifted the noodle lid, steam hitting her face. Her peripheral vision caught the bags on the floor.
A supermarket plastic bag of discounted items sat awkwardly next to high-end brand gift boxes.
Her gaze moved up to the woman in an expensive dress, her refined face focused as she sipped broth from the noodle cup, only to stick out her tongue and fan her mouth. “So hot!”
“…” Wen Pinghan pulled a row of yogurt from her bag, inserted a straw, and placed it in front of her.
Xie Zhifei downed it in one go, then noticed the “special offer” label glaring on the pack.
She glanced at Wen Pinghan, surprised. A sales supervisor at Qisheng, and she’s buying discounted yogurt?
Wen Pinghan caught her look, meeting her eyes steadily, searching for any hint of mockery or disdain. She found none—this woman was already chugging a second yogurt, showing no sign of looking down on her or any self-consciousness.
“…”
After finishing the noodles, Xie Zhifei rubbed her stomach and headed to the shelves. “I want some dark chocolate.”
Wen Pinghan packed the remaining yogurt, ready to leave, when a couple passed by on the street, catching her eye. Without thinking, she chased after them, following from a distance.
The man held the woman’s hand, the woman shyly leaning into him. They chatted about what to eat tomorrow, soon disappearing into the crowd.
Wen Pinghan watched them go, then pulled out her phone and called Lin Zhimin. “Xu Chang… Is Xu Chang dating anyone?”
“Xu Chang from Team Six? Nope. We joined the company together, so we used to eat together a lot. She was always saying she wanted to get a boyfriend,” Lin Zhimin said, pausing. “But we’re in different teams now, so we don’t eat together much. No idea if she’s single. Why?”
“No reason. Thinking of setting her up.” Wen Pinghan stared at the distant petite woman, her brow furrowing slightly.
“What? You’ve got connections and you’re not hooking me up, but someone from another team?!” Lin Zhimin grumbled over the phone. “Hmph, all my loyalty for nothing!”
Wen Pinghan smiled, heading home. “I just thought they weren’t good enough for you.”
“That’s more like it.” Lin Zhimin giggled.
Back home, Wen Pinghan tossed her phone aside and prepared to shower, then froze—something felt off, like she’d forgotten something.
“Miss, you really didn’t see where a whole person went? I just went to grab chocolate, and she’s gone?!” Xie Zhifei frantically asked the convenience store clerk.
“I was restocking. I didn’t see,” the clerk apologized. “Maybe your friend left? Did she call or message you?”
“No!” Xie Zhifei paused, realizing, “Oh, maybe because we don’t have each other’s contact info?”
Clerk: “…”
*
Company break room.
Noticing Xu Chang getting water, Wen Pinghan asked Lin Zhimin if she needed a refill, and they went together.
Lin Zhimin, a break room regular, greeted other frequent slackers. When it was Xu Chang’s turn, she casually chatted, quickly digging for gossip. “Xu Chang, you were always saying you wanted a boyfriend. Any luck?”
Others joined in. “Yeah, you single? Need us to set you up?”
“Not yet. If you know someone good, hook me up!” Xu Chang laughed.
In the corner, Wen Pinghan frowned, sizing her up. Xu Chang seemed to sense it, turning to meet her gaze with a smile, but her eyes held complex emotions. “Big Sis Han, you’re here too.”
“Yup.” Wen Pinghan sipped her water, then pretended to refill.
“Heard Big Sis Han’s killing it. Maybe we’ll hear you speak at next week’s promotion meeting. So impressive, reaching this level so young, and so pretty. I’m jealous…” Xu Chang said, her tone ambiguous.
“Totally, I’m in awe of Big Sis Han. Only a bit older than me, but so badass.” Lin Zhimin grinned, buttering her up.
Wen Pinghan smiled faintly, asking Xu Chang curiously, “Heard? From who?”
Xu Chang’s smile faltered. “Everyone’s saying it, right?”
“Yeah.” Lin Zhimin nodded, adding more flattery. “We all think you’ve got this, Big Sis Han!”
“Flattering, but don’t say that in front of me next time. Your supervisor might not be thrilled,” Wen Pinghan said to Xu Chang with a smile.
The room’s vibe shifted subtly. Eyes turned to Xu Chang, who nodded awkwardly and changed the subject.
Back at her desk, Lin Zhimin soon returned, whispering, “Big Sis Han, is Xu Chang trying to cozy up to join our team?”
It wasn’t a wild guess. Team Six’s performance was always at the bottom, so their supervisor wasn’t on the promotion list. If the supervisor didn’t move, no one below could advance or get good projects, prompting some to consider switching teams.
“No cozying up,” Wen Pinghan said, narrowing her eyes and sighing. “But she might want to join our team.”
“Huh? Our team’s full. What’s she trying to snag?” Lin Zhimin wasn’t pleased.
Wen Pinghan gave a wry smile. The team was full, but if she got promoted, the supervisor spot would open.
That evening, Mr. Wu came by, summoning Wen Pinghan and the other promotion candidates to his office for a meeting.
Two workers were fixing a camera at the office entrance. Since the meeting was happening, they paused and were taken to eat by the secretary.
After the meeting, Wen Pinghan was asked to stay. The others, sensing the outcome, left with grim faces.
“Can you handle this deal? If so, it’s yours.” Mr. Wu pointed at his computer.
Wen Pinghan stood behind him, glancing at the screen. It was a big client—landing it would mean a hefty commission.
“I can.”
“Why’re you standing back there? It’s a big deal. Don’t you need to look closely? What if you mess up?”
“I’m not nearsighted. I can see fine.”
Mr. Wu chuckled, swiveling his chair, eyeing her up and down with an ambiguous tone. “You’re a smart one.”
“I’m not smart. I just work hard.” Wen Pinghan pretended not to catch his meaning.
Suddenly, his hand reached out. Startled, Wen Pinghan jerked her hands behind her back. “Mr. Wu, if there’s nothing else, I’ll get back to work.”
“We’re not done. You haven’t answered. Do you want this deal?”
Wen Pinghan stared at him calmly. “Do you want to give it to me?”
“That’s a bit rude. Are you this impolite with clients? Then this application…” Mr. Wu tapped the files on his desk—promotion documents they’d just submitted, hers on top. “I’ll have to think carefully about whether to send it up.”
Wen Pinghan closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and, as if throwing caution to the wind, stepped beside him, leaning to study the screen.
His hand covered the back of hers.
“Mr. Wu, you’re touching my hand,” Wen Pinghan said, turning to meet his eyes, each word deliberate. “I didn’t consent, so please let go.”
“Sorry, I was reaching for the mouse and accidentally touched you,” Mr. Wu laughed.
Wen Pinghan frowned, holding his gaze for a long moment before turning back to the screen, defeated. A moment later, without looking, she asked, “Mr. Wu, are you staring at my chest?”
“You’re joking, right? You’re blocking the screen. I’m just looking at the data. Guessing at your boss like that isn’t good, but I won’t hold it against you.”
Wen Pinghan endured his nauseating gaze, standing straight. “Mr. Wu, I’ve thoroughly reviewed the data. I’m confident I can take this deal.”
“Good. I admire your ability. Wait for the news.”
Wen Pinghan hurried back to her office, tossed her notebook down, and went to the bathroom. She scrubbed her hands hard, then entered a stall, opened her phone, and stopped the recording.
This guy was too sly.
Even without cameras, it was hard to trap him into saying anything incriminating. He was either well-prepared or very experienced.
Her face darkened, a wave of despair hitting her.
She probably wasn’t his first target, yet there were no rumors about this in the company. That meant no one had reported him—or those who did got no results.
Her phone rang, an unknown number.
“Hello, who’s this?” Wen Pinghan answered.
“Is this Wen Pinghan?”
“It is. You are?” The voice was familiar, and a striking face flashed in her mind.
“It’s me, your sworn sister! Is this your WeChat number?”
“Yeah, how—”
The call ended quickly. Puzzled, she opened WeChat and saw a friend request.
Hesitating whether to accept, the phone rang again. “Sister, hurry and accept~”
Wen Pinghan approved the request under her urging, and the call finally ended.
She exhaled, then frowned, even more confused—
Wait, how did she get my number?!
