The Green Tea Supporting Girl Is Still Playing Her Role Today (GL) - Chapter 68
Chapter 68
“How did you get so scared?” Zhao Xiaojing, being the closest, quickly helped her up from the floor and pushed the chair steadily behind her. “There, now you can sit.”
Xie Zhifei rubbed her backside and sat down awkwardly, forcing a stiff smile. “Sis, what are you talking about? I didn’t quite catch that.”
Wen Pinghan smiled faintly and repeated, “Xiaojing said you like her and haven’t denied it.”
“When did that happen?!” Xie Zhifei looked at Zhao Xiaojing in confusion, her mind suddenly flashing back to New Year’s Eve. She helplessly tapped her head, never expecting Zhao Xiaojing to take such an absurd idea seriously.
“I can explain. It’s not what you think,” Xie Zhifei said, calming herself.
“Then what is it?” Zhao Xiaojing asked. “On New Year’s Eve, there were only five of us. You said you don’t like men, so that rules out Gu Zhizhang and Li Feng. Doesn’t that leave me as the most likely option?”
“Jing, you’re my best friend. You can’t take up the girlfriend spot too,” Xie Zhifei said earnestly.
Zhao Xiaojing looked puzzled. “What do you mean? Did I get it wrong?”
“Couldn’t be more wrong!” Xie Zhifei slapped the table.
Zhao Xiaojing gasped, processing the truth before patting her chest. “Phew, that’s a relief! I was freaking out, but now I don’t have to worry!”
“Exactly,” Xie Zhifei nodded repeatedly. “Don’t overthink it. I was just speechless at your guess back then. We’re such close friends—our sisterly bond can’t change. I wouldn’t like you like that, no matter who I like.”
“What? You think I’m not good enough?!” Zhao Xiaojing teased.
“Just messing with you.” Zhao Xiaojing suddenly burst out laughing, then paused, looking more confused. “Wait, if you don’t even like me, then who do you like? It’s got to be either Wen Pinghan or Fang Ningshu, right?”
Xie Zhifei rolled her eyes and gave a shy smile.
Zhao Xiaojing glanced at Wen Pinghan, who was calmly picking up a piece of meat to eat, and pondered. “I got it!” she exclaimed, as if struck by a revelation.
Xie Zhifei and Wen Pinghan both turned to her, nervously awaiting her answer.
“It’s Fang Ningshu, definitely Fang Ningshu, right?” Zhao Xiaojing said confidently.
Xie Zhifei: “…”
Wen Pinghan: “…”
Though she didn’t know how this misunderstanding started, Xie Zhifei could now vaguely picture the scene from that night and understand why she’d been too stunned to speak.
“Fang Ningshu used to be Gu Zhizhang’s secretary. You two must have met long ago. Maybe you’ve been secretly crushing on her, so you stole her from Gu Zhizhang to see her every day!” Zhao Xiaojing analyzed, sounding more convinced by the second, her eyes sparkling with her newfound brilliance.
Xie Zhifei: “…”
Xie Zhifei glanced at Wen Pinghan, hinting, “Why didn’t you guess Sister Wen?”
Zhao Xiaojing replied, “Based on what you said, sisterly bonds don’t change. You and Wen Pinghan are so close, you definitely wouldn’t like her. That leaves Fang Ningshu. Plus, her work skills are top-notch—she must help you a ton. Even if her background’s average, she’s probably earned plenty of money, so she’s barely worthy of you!”
Xie Zhifei: “…”
Wen Pinghan: “…”
“Actually—” Xie Zhifei started, but Li Feng’s voice cut her off.
“Xiaojing, sorry, I’m late,” Li Feng said, hurrying over.
“Afei and the others are here too. Let’s eat together,” Zhao Xiaojing suggested.
“No way,” Xie Zhifei and Li Feng said in unison.
They exchanged a glance, and Xie Zhifei added, “You two enjoy your alone time. We won’t be third wheels.”
Li Feng gave her an approving look.
“Who wants alone time with him? I like lively gatherings. It’s rare we’re all together, so let’s eat!” Zhao Xiaojing insisted.
“No can do. Sister and I have things to discuss, and we’re almost done eating anyway. We’ll be leaving soon. Go eat with Li Feng—don’t keep him waiting,” Xie Zhifei said.
“Yeah, I only reserved a table for two. Sitting in the aisle like this isn’t great—we’re blocking people,” Li Feng added.
Reluctantly, Zhao Xiaojing followed him to a window table in the corner.
“Sorry, she’s a bit short on brains,” Xie Zhifei said, pointing to her head.
Wen Pinghan smiled and shook her head. “It’s fine.”
“I’ll find a chance to set her straight. She’s so clueless, I practically handed her the answer, and she still didn’t get it,” Xie Zhifei said, exasperated.
“No need,” Wen Pinghan said softly, looking up. “Don’t tell her, or anyone else.”
Xie Zhifei paused. “Why not?”
“I’m not ready for others to know yet. This is just between us, and that’s enough,” Wen Pinghan said, lowering her eyes.
Xie Zhifei bit her lip, guessing Wen didn’t want unnecessary trouble. They’d been friends before, hesitant to speak out due to their boss-employee dynamic. Now that they were dating—and both women—Wen likely wasn’t ready to face others’ reactions. Understandable. Xie Zhifei smiled warmly. “Alright, it’s our little secret!”
After dinner, they slipped out the back door to avoid Zhao Xiaojing dragging them along for more fun.
The movie was still over an hour away, so they strolled through the mall. Xie Zhifei spotted a coat and said excitedly, “This would look stunning on you, Sister. Try it on!”
Unable to resist her enthusiasm, Wen Pinghan took the coat to the fitting room, checking the price tag first. Knowing the store wasn’t cheap, she sighed at the cost.
“How’s it look?” Xie Zhifei asked from the sofa, noticing Wen Pinghan come out holding the coat. “Why didn’t you try it?”
“It didn’t fit. Too ugly, didn’t look good on me. I was embarrassed to come out,” Wen Pinghan said.
“You look amazing in anything, Sister. But if you don’t like it, let’s keep shopping,” Xie Zhifei said with a smile.
“Mm.”
As they left the store, Wen Pinghan asked, “Need to buy anything?”
“Nope.”
“Me neither. Let’s grab a drink instead.”
Xie Zhifei glanced at Wen Pinghan’s heels, rarely seen on her, and cursed her own carelessness. “Sure, there’s a café downstairs. Let’s sit there.”
“Mm.” At the café, Wen Pinghan quickly ordered on her phone. When she looked up, she caught Xie Zhifei’s phone camera aimed at her side profile, snapping away.
Click, click, click.
“…” Wen Pinghan leaned closer, peeking at the photos. “How’d they turn out? I wasn’t ready—do I look bad?”
“No way!” Xie Zhifei showed her the screen. “You’re drop-dead gorgeous.”
“They’re not great,” Wen Pinghan said sincerely, reaching to delete them.
Xie Zhifei held the phone up high. As Wen Pinghan leaned forward, Xie wrapped an arm around her back, chuckling. “Sister, you’re so eager. So forward.”
Seeing Wen Pinghan’s cheeks flush, Xie Zhifei’s mood soared. She loved teasing her into blushing. Playfully, she pulled Wen closer, their bodies pressed tight, and whispered, “Sister, my dream’s come true. I always thought holding you like this was a far-off fantasy.”
Wen Pinghan lifted her gaze, stared for a moment, then kissed Xie Zhifei’s cheek.
“Ah! S-Sister, you…” Xie Zhifei blushed furiously, caught off guard, and buried her face in Wen’s neck, too embarrassed to be teased.
Wen Pinghan laughed silently, noticing the phone was still in selfie mode. She reached over and pressed the shutter.
A snapshot of two blushing fools.
The blushing fools held hands at the movie, having booked prime middle seats. But the theater was nearly empty.
Wen Pinghan headed for row seven, but Xie Zhifei tugged her upward.
“Where to? We’re in row seven,” Wen Pinghan reminded.
“Shh.”
Wen Pinghan fell silent, following her to the back corner of the last row.
She gave Xie Zhifei a knowing look and whispered, “What are you up to?”
Xie Zhifei grinned. “I’ve always heard people talk about these seats online. I’m curious too!”
“It’s so far. Can you even see the movie?” Wen Pinghan asked.
“With such low attendance, this movie’s probably a dud. I’ll just watch you,” Xie Zhifei said.
Wen Pinghan laughed. “When the lights go out, what’ll you see?”
“Then I’ll touch,” Xie Zhifei said shamelessly.
Wen Pinghan: “.”
“I mean, like holding hands or touching your face!” Xie Zhifei clarified.
You’d better.
Ten minutes into the movie, Xie Zhifei wasn’t hooked. No surprise—how could she focus with her dream girl beside her?
She lifted the armrest between them, removing the barrier, and reached for Wen Pinghan’s hand. In the dim light, her sense of touch sharpened, tracing every inch of Wen’s palm.
After a while, she looked up to find Wen Pinghan silently watching her.
The flickering screen light danced on their faces. Their gazes locked like magnets, and they shared a long, silent kiss.
Someone stood to use the restroom, startling Wen Pinghan. She pushed Xie Zhifei away, blushing and staring at the screen.
“Sister, one more kiss,” Xie Zhifei whispered in her ear.
“Watch the movie,” Wen Pinghan said.
“No more kisses?”
“Mm.” Wen Pinghan figured the person might return from the restroom any moment.
“Fine,” Xie Zhifei said wistfully, resting her head on Wen’s shoulder to watch.
The restroom-goer never returned, likely having left. Wen Pinghan tried watching but couldn’t focus. Glancing down in the faint light, she noticed Xie Zhifei had fallen asleep.
The movie’s sound filled the theater, but the world felt quiet to Wen Pinghan. Her eyes lingered on Xie Zhifei’s face, time speeding up. If only this moment could last forever.
Xie Zhifei said her dream came true, but wasn’t it the same for Wen Pinghan?
How many times had she fantasized about this scene?
Only now, with Xie Zhifei intimately asleep on her shoulder, did it feel real—they were in love, truly in love.
They’d eat, shop, and date together, hold hands at movies, sneak kisses, and do more intimate things just for them in the future.
If possible, she wanted to be in every one of Xie Zhifei’s dreams.
I’ll work hard, she thought. She’d strive to surpass Fang Ningshu, to be the employee everyone associated with Xie Zhifei’s success, to be Zhao Xiaojing’s first guess for Xie’s crush, to earn Chairman Xie’s approval despite her background, to belong in Xie Zhifei’s future.
She knew a vast gap separated them, but she was willing to close it step by step, no matter how long it took. Xie Zhifei deserved the best of everything.
Wen Pinghan turned her head, slowly leaning down to touch Xie’s soft lips.
But Xie Zhifei’s eyes snapped open, sparkling like stars. “Ha! Caught you! All that fake sleeping paid off. I knew my charm was irresistible. It’s only human to want me, Sister. No need to hide it when I’m this stunning, graceful, and universally adored—”
“Shut up,” Wen Pinghan said, then boldly kissed her, eyes closing with a gaze so tender.
