The Green Tea Supporting Girl Is Still Playing Her Role Today (GL) - Chapter 87
Chapter 87
The phone on the bedside table buzzed. A slender hand reached out from under the covers and picked up the phone to glance at it.
“Whose call is it?” Xie Zhifei asked in a daze.
“Wan Wan’s.”
“What does she want from you this early in the morning? It must be nothing important.” Xie Zhifei reached over and hung up the call, placed the phone back on the bedside table, wrapped her arms around her, and yawned. “Let’s sleep a little more.”
“Mm.” They had gone to bed too late last night, and Wen Pinghan still felt very sleepy. She snuggled comfortably against her and took a quick nap.
It was almost noon when Wen Pinghan finally got up to prepare lunch. After a while, she returned to the room to wake Xie Zhifei, but she saw her sleeping soundly and instinctively lightened her footsteps. She walked to the bedside, a smile curving her lips, and leaned down to kiss her forehead.
Xie Zhifei slowly opened her eyes.
Their gazes met, and Xie Zhifei’s eyebrows curved in a smile. She pressed a hand to the back of her head and pulled her down onto the bed.
“Don’t fool around. The soup is in the pot.” Wen Pinghan laughed.
“I’m still here. Do you want to drink the soup or eat me? Hm?” Xie Zhifei tugged at the strap of her apron and asked in a low voice.
Wen Pinghan looked at her with a touch of pride, then rolled over and captured her lips.
The soup in the pot began to boil. Xie Zhifei poked Wen Pinghan’s collarbone and said breathlessly, “Is the soup ready?”
“Not yet. It needs to simmer a bit longer.”
“Hee~”
It was unclear how much time passed before Wen Pinghan finally got up to check the soup in the pot. Xie Zhifei slipped into a bathrobe and lazily went to take a shower.
“Time to eat.” Wen Pinghan called from the kitchen.
“Coming.” Xie Zhifei dressed, dried her hair as she walked to the living room, and her phone rang at that moment. She glanced at the caller ID and answered. “Hello, Dad.”
“Come back now.” Xie Hongxu ordered.
“Now? I haven’t eaten yet. I’ll come find you after I eat.” Xie Zhifei said.
“Right now, immediately, at once!”
“What’s so urgent?” Xie Zhifei muttered, but the line went dead on the other end.
Wen Pinghan came out with bowls and chopsticks. “Are you still eating?”
“It sounded pretty urgent on the phone. I’d better hurry back and see. I hope nothing big has happened.” Xie Zhifei grabbed her bag and rushed out the door.
“Be safe.” Wen Pinghan saw her off at the door, watched her leave, then returned to the dining table. She looked at the spread of dishes but had no appetite. She felt some worry about what important matter Chairman Xie wanted to discuss with her.
She sat down in a chair and idly opened her phone. She saw a WeChat message from Wang Wan that morning.
[Call me back if you have time!]
Wen Pinghan puzzledly called her back. It took a good while before the other side picked up.
“Hello? Why are you only calling back now?” Wang Wan asked.
Wen Pinghan heard her speaking in a hushed voice and felt puzzled. “Where are you?”
“At Uncle Xie’s house. You’re done for.” Wang Wan hid in the bathroom, covered the phone, and spoke softly.
Wen Pinghan’s heart skipped a beat. “What do you mean?”
Wang Wan: “My aunt found out about your affair. She’s telling Uncle Xie about it right now!”
Wen Pinghan’s face paled. She immediately understood why Xie Zhifei had been called back. She stood up in a panic. “Afei just got called over by her dad.”
“It’s over. Why did you come to deliver yourself like this? Do you think Uncle Xie will hit her?”
Wen Pinghan did not dare to guess. She grabbed her car keys and headed out the door. She said, “I’m going over now. Once she arrives, help me keep Chairman Xie steady. Make sure he doesn’t lay a hand on her, no matter what.”
“Hurry up. I’m just a little shrimp here and can’t say much of anything right now.” Wang Wan said.
After hanging up, Wang Wan cautiously returned to the living room. The atmosphere remained quite tense. She did not dare approach the two elders at all and only shrank beside Gu Zhizhang. Gu Zhizhang had stayed silent since he entered, his hands crossed and propped on his knees, his eyes red, lost in thought about something.
“Dad, I’m back.” Half an hour later, Xie Zhifei appeared in everyone’s view. As soon as she walked in, she sensed that the atmosphere was off.
Xie Hongxu sat alone on one side, his face expressionless, his authority self-evident without anger.
Gu’s mother sat with her arms crossed, her gaze contemptuous, her expression arrogant, as if she were enjoying the show.
Gu Zhizhang sat there like an ice sculpture, while Wang Wan beside him desperately signaled her with her eyes. But Xie Zhifei could not read the deeper meaning at all. She looked puzzledly at Xie Hongxu. “Dad, you called me over so urgently. Has something happened?”
Gu’s mother gave a cold laugh. “Afei, I watched you grow up. How could I not know you have this kind of preference?”
“What do you mean?” Xie Zhifei walked over in bewilderment and saw several photos placed on the table. She glanced at them and felt a jolt in her heart. She looked up and asked, “Where did these photos come from?”
No one answered.
Xie Zhifei looked at Wang Wan, who had the loosest lips. Wang Wan awkwardly raised a hand to cover her face.
That meant it was not Xie Hongxu who got them. It had to be one of this mother-son pair, or both.
She gathered the photos, tucked them carefully into her bag. “Thanks. I was just worrying about not having anyone else to take couple photos for us.”
Gu’s mother was astonished by her composure—or rather, her thick skin—and questioned her. “Afei, even at a time like this, don’t you have anything to explain?”
“What’s there to explain? Facts speak louder than arguments. Isn’t love right there in front of you?” Xie Zhifei replied righteously.
Gu Zhizhang’s expression remained inscrutable.
“Afei!”
Wen Pinghan’s voice came from the doorway. She rushed in and saw Xie Zhifei standing before everyone. She immediately went to her side, turned to Xie Hongxu. “Uncle Xie…”
Gu Zhizhang finally raised his head and stared at them without blinking. He stood up, his voice hoarse as he asked, “You two… is it real?”
“Yes, what you’re shipping is all real.” Xie Zhifei took Wen Pinghan’s hand. The main character decided to give him a little sugar.
The others: “???”
“Pfft.” Wang Wan covered her mouth, feeling that laughing at a time like this would be a bit impolite.
Wen Pinghan turned to look at Xie Zhifei and saw that she showed no panic at all, even managing to crack a joke. The heart that had been tightly suspended began to relax a little, giving her great courage. She gripped her fingers tightly and countered, “Why do you people always like to conduct secret investigations behind backs? And then run here to tattle to Uncle Xie? You keep saying you’re from a prominent family and won’t allow others to climb too high. Forgive my shallow experience, but I’ve never seen such an undignified prominent family.”
Well said!
Xie Zhifei gave Wen Pinghan wild applause in her heart.
Gu’s mother lost face and pointed at her as she scolded, “Who gave you permission to speak like that?!”
“Who gave you permission to speak like that? Who are you to control my freedom of speech? You do plenty of dirty deeds yourself but won’t let others talk about them? So this is your way of conducting yourself?” Wen Pinghan questioned.
Gu’s mother was so angry she could not catch her breath and patted her chest. But she found no one came to help her. She instinctively looked at Wang Wan, but Wang Wan kept her head down, her shoulders shaking nonstop, and did not notice her at all.
She glanced at her own son again and saw him still immersed in the immense grief of the person he liked tangled up with the person who liked him. He paid no attention to her situation at the moment.
At that thought, she grew even more furious. She slapped the table in anger. “Brother Xie, say something! Take a good look. This is the person your daughter has chosen!”
Xie Zhifei and Wen Pinghan both carefully looked at Xie Hongxu, who had remained silent. Others did not matter to them, but Xie Hongxu was different.
The courage Wen Pinghan had just mustered deflated again. She swallowed and steeled herself mentally, ready to face the coming storm.
“You two are really together?” Xie Hongxu raised his head and asked solemnly.
The two exchanged a glance, and Xie Zhifei nodded solemnly. “Yes.”
“When did this happen?”
“Not long ago. We originally planned to find a chance to tell you properly. But we didn’t expect some people to play dirty behind our backs and tell you first.” Xie Zhifei said pointedly.
Gu’s mother patted her chest to catch her breath again and pretended not to hear her words.
“When did you suddenly, suddenly start liking women? You… why would you like women?” Xie Hongxu asked, puzzled.
“It’s all because of you.”
“Because of me?!” Xie Hongxu looked bewildered. “Why because of me?”
“First, it’s your tolerance that made me believe you always love your daughter, no matter who I end up liking. You would accept and embrace it.” Xie Zhifei’s tone grew emotional, her expression sincere.
“Second, it’s your broad perspective that made me believe you are not a narrow-minded person. What storms haven’t you weathered? How could this little thing count for anything? You certainly wouldn’t lose your temper like some people and disgrace yourself.”
“Finally, it’s because of your strength that gave me enough confidence to fear no outside gossip and to follow my heart, to choose the person I truly like, rather than compromising with the world all the time!”
Xie Zhifei enumerated the reasons passionately, sat down on the sofa beside him, hugged his shoulders, and said movingly, “Just tell me, with a dad like you, what do I have to be afraid of?”
Xie Hongxu suddenly straightened his back and could not help feeling a bit proud. “So it’s because of me.”
At that sight, Gu’s mother truly felt like she might faint and kept rubbing her temples.
Wang Wan nearly laughed herself faint.
Wen Pinghan watched Xie Zhifei acting coquettish and coaxing him, and suddenly had a strange intuition. The storm she had anticipated might just be blown away by her few words?
