Chapter 12: Spending Sister Shu’s Money Without a Care
After finally pushing away distracting thoughts from her mind, Lin Xu twisted her face and shooed the mother and daughter out of the room.
Shu Qingyou was sensible, understanding AO heat better than Lin Xu. She endured silently, knowing Lin Xu wasn’t much better off.
After all, just earlier, half of Lin Xu’s neck had turned red, her eyes dodging, showing urgency.
Shu Qingyou still remembered Lin Xu’s usual style—formal, accentuating her figure, never casual. This morning, with a playful motive, she dressed Lin Xu in leisurewear.
Surprisingly fitting, it gave the first impression of a girl next door.
Though Lin Xu couldn’t suppress her long-formed instincts—furrowing her brows, eyes fierce, a bit irritable—she seemed tame enough now.
“Can I come in?”
Lin Xu drank water to quench her thirst, deeply troubled by the sticky, damp feeling somewhere on her body, the lingering sensation of brief comfort still present.
The thought of washing her hands flashed by—should she deal with it completely?
After pondering for a few minutes, a knock startled her. She fumbled the glass, splashing water onto her pants.
“Wait, hold on!”
Always thinking dirty thoughts—couldn’t she focus on recovering her memories? Lin Xu scolded her indecent ideas.
“Ahem, what’s up?”
Lin Xu got up from the wooden floor, crossed her arms, bent one leg, and leaned against the bed, acting nonchalant.
“I brought you some clean clothes, it’s my…”
Including underwear, handed to Lin Xu as she stepped closer.
Shu Qingyou’s gaze drifted downward. After her injection, she recovered slower than Lin Xu, her voice softer than usual, a cold glint in her eyes.
“Did I disturb you?”
She didn’t continue, leaving Lin Xu confused. Following Shu Qingyou’s evasive glance, Lin Xu quickly realized.
This water was perfect, splashing anywhere but *there*.
Lin Xu forced calm: “No, you came at the right time.”
Better to play it off than explain.
Lin Xu casually accepted the nightgown and black lace-trimmed underwear.
She opened her mouth but stopped, struggling to describe her mood.
Shu Qingyou didn’t like her that way, right? Yet she picked *this* style to hint at something—or maybe Lin Xu was overthinking.
That’s called narcissism and overconfidence. Lin Xu mentally scolded herself, thanking Shu Qingyou.
Shu Qingyou: “I’ll take you to buy pajamas tomorrow. Rest early.”
Lin Xu: “Huh? Spending your money again? Got enough?”
Straight to the point, Shu Qingyou lowered her lashes: “Isn’t asking that unnecessary?”
Lin Xu thought, isn’t that obvious? Sister, are you living off savings, staying in a place like this with limited cash? But saying so would hurt her pride.
She rephrased: “Where do you work?”
Shu Qingyou didn’t rush to answer, pausing a few seconds, scanning Lin Xu’s sincere face.
Her dark, focused eyes—long ago, Shu Qingyou had been drawn to them, like the moon bound to Earth’s orbit.
Fatal, yet impossible to resist.
Shu Qingyou’s tone softened, ending with a slight lilt: “Worried about me?”
Lin Xu froze. Why did Shu Qingyou’s words sound flirty, almost teasing?
Shu Qingyou’s face was so cold, barely sparing her a smile.
Must be her imagination. Lin Xu quickly decided she was just bored, caring too much about others.
“Alright, just asking. How’s Shu Rong doing? Scared of shots, haha.”
Teasing someone’s daughter was low. Lin Xu hurriedly clarified: “I mean, what kid isn’t scared of needles?”
The more she said, the worse it got. From that night to the next morning, Shu Qingyou ignored Lin Xu’s jokes, leaving her glum.
But when she ate the egg and bacon Shu Qingyou fried, her mood shifted: “This egg’s runny, wow, so tender! The bacon’s crispy!”
Shu Qingyou had no extra thoughts on Lin Xu’s exaggerated praise: “No need. It’s just a normal breakfast.”
Lin Xu looked up. Shu Qingyou poured fresh orange juice, sliding it by the plate. Her loose navy shirt sleeves were rolled up, an ebony bracelet on her slim wrist, her skin glowing white in the morning light.
Lin Xu’s heart skipped chaotically. She barely swallowed the bacon, looked away, and sipped the sweet-tart juice.
“Oh, thanks.”
Today, Shu Qingyou wore a light gray vest, black skirt, and a coat, like an office worker heading out.
She’d dressed Shu Rong for going out. Lin Xu, thinking it over, decided to suck up to Shu Rong.
“I’ll carry her, I’ll carry her!”
She dashed to Shu Qingyou, snatching Shu Rong.
Shu Rong was bundled like a small loaf, her hair soft. Lin Xu was extra enthusiastic, rubbing her head and pinching her rosy cheeks.
“Your mom made you so pretty.”
Look at that, such a charmer. Lin Xu felt proud.
“Shu, sister, I’m right, aren’t I?”
Shu Qingyou ignored Lin Xu’s flattery. Some of her dark hair was tucked under her coat; she lifted a hand to free it.
Oddly, Lin Xu noticed Shu Qingyou’s ring finger was bare. Where was her Alpha? No photos in the house—maybe in an album.
Kids get photographed at birth, but for some reason, Lin Xu didn’t want to ask. Thinking about it made her breathless, her temples throbbing.
Shu Qingyou’s gaze lingered on Lin Xu’s face for a moment. She grabbed the car keys and slipped on shoes at the entrance.
“Yeah, she’s very cute.”
The car ride was short, arriving at the supermarket. The sky outside the city was clear blue, like it was washed, the cold air sharp. Lin Xu exhaled a small white puff.
Shu Rong mostly wanted her mom to hold her, but Lin Xu wouldn’t let go.
The little thing in her arms resisted. Lin Xu offered a reason Shu Rong couldn’t refuse.
“Sister will buy you chocolate later.”
It didn’t work. Though young, Shu Rong wasn’t dumb. The earlier candy promise wasn’t kept. She puffed her cheeks, whimpering.
Lin Xu got the hint. She took the cart from Shu Qingyou, put Shu Rong on the seat, and headed off.
“I’ll take her to get snacks. You pick clothes and meet us later.”
Clothes were on the first floor, groceries and snacks on the second. Shu Qingyou didn’t get why Lin Xu was in a rush, but her lively face brightened her mood a bit.
Fine, let them have fun.
Shu Qingyou found a phone shop by the supermarket. The young owner, bored from watching TV, perked up at the sight of a pretty woman.
She tapped the glass counter: “Miss, what phone do you want?”
Shu Qingyou showed her phone, its screen shattered horribly.
“It won’t turn on. Can you fix it?”
The owner saw the issue at a glance: “Hard to say. The back’s smashed, water got into the motherboard.”
She pried open the ruined back with tweezers, peering closely, shining a laser pen.
“Whoa, the capacitor’s busted too. Hold on… the flash chip might work. Still want to fix it, miss?”
That day, after Lin Xu frantically called her, Shu Qingyou arrived to find the phone like this. Something major must’ve happened, tied to Lin Xu’s family.
If she took it to any shop to recover data, the contents shouldn’t be exposed.
Shu Qingyou firmly declined, “Thanks, not fixing it now.”
But she couldn’t keep dragging Lin Xu around—she wasn’t a pet. Shu Qingyou bought a new phone anyway.
Carrying the phone box, she picked cotton pajamas for Lin Xu and headed to the second floor to meet them.
Lin Xu, pushing Shu Rong, had loaded the cart with snacks—biscuits, cakes, chips, fried foods—things she felt she’d never seen or eaten.
“Rongrong, want this? You totally do, right? Buy, buy, buy!”
Since Shu Qingyou hinted yesterday not to worry about money, Lin Xu picked gleefully.
But Shu Rong, still shocked by the packed cart, saw another colorful gift bag drop in front of her, nearly out of space to sit.
Chocolates and gummies chosen, Lin Xu waited with Shu Rong near the checkout. Soon, she spotted a familiar figure and waved.
The supermarket’s fluorescent lights were bright. Shu Qingyou, walking toward the light, had skin nearly translucent. Lin Xu couldn’t look away.
Shu, sister’s legs were long and straight, her walk not splayed, like a cat on a line—not as bold as a model on a runway, but calm and composed.
Unexpectedly, Lin Xu’s tastes were so varied, the cart overflowing with snacks. Shu Qingyou met her gaze for a while, teasing her.
“…You’re a little pig.”
