Chapter 13: The Vinegar Jar Broke, Don’t Get Close to Her
Realizing she was still daydreaming, Lin Xu wanted to slap herself.
She retorted, “It’s rare to come here, so I have to shop big.”
Then she noticed the phone box and pajamas, and her fingers holding the bag looked pale and weak.
In a rush, Lin Xu stuffed them into Shu Rong’s arms, grabbed Shu Qingyou’s hand, and felt an obvious difference in their body temperatures. Lin Xu felt sorry, as Shu Qingyou’s hand was really cold.
“Sister Shu, your hand is cold. I’ll warm it up for you.”
She held Shu Qingyou’s soft hand tightly and breathed on the back of it.
Shu Rong, holding the bag, was confused. Why was Big Sister kissing Mommy’s hand?!
Her little head was full of big shock.
“Lin Xu…”
Shu Qingyou called her playfully. In the busy supermarket, at the emergency exit, two women with a child probably made people think they were a family.
“Hm?”
Lin Xu thought it wasn’t enough, so she wrapped both hands around Shu Qingyou’s, rubbed them, and thought friction makes heat. Her idea was simple.
“Done shopping? Let’s go.”
Shu Qingyou’s hand warmed up briefly, but her mood suddenly dropped. She pressed her lips together, while Lin Xu’s eyes sparkled with tiny stars.
But Shu Qingyou started to dislike Lin Xu’s overly familiar closeness, instinctively recalling some unhappy memories.
“Oh, okay.”
Why was Shu Qingyou like a sunny sky turning cloudy? She was fine just moments ago. So hard to understand. Lin Xu sulkily pushed the cart to the cashier, took a few steps, and turned back.
“I’m only doing this because you bought me a phone, as a small thank you.”
Shu Qingyou put her hands in her pockets, followed calmly, and said in a voice only she could hear, “I always knew.”
At checkout, Lin Xu kept an eye on the total price screen. The final number settled. So many snacks, and it was so cheap?!
But she still had to carry four big plastic bags alone. With a sad face, the stuff wasn’t heavy, but it fully showed her greedy truth.
“Walk slower. There’s stuff here for you and Rongrong too.”
“She doesn’t eat chips or cookies, and neither do I.”
Shu Rong didn’t approve. She lightly tugged her mom’s clothes and whimpered. Shu Qingyou ignored her daughter’s craving for untried snacks and said, “She’ll lead you astray.”
No way, Mommy, you said Big Sister was a good person before.
In Shu Qingyou’s arms, Shu Rong rested her chin on her shoulder. Lin Xu smiled and mouthed to her: Choc-o-late.
Shu Qingyou settled Shu Rong, tossed the snack bags into the trunk, while Lin Xu bent over, rummaging through the plastic bags.
“Found it yet?”
Glancing over, Lin Xu’s head shape was full, her chestnut curls unconditioned, with a few strands sticking up. As someone with OCD, Shu Qingyou wanted to fix it.
Then, Lin Xu grinned, showing off her prize.
“Found it! Chocolate, gummies. So annoying, the cashier should’ve bagged these small things last.”
Instantly, Shu Qingyou dropped the urge to smooth Lin Xu’s hair, lowered her eyes, and responded as usual, “Get in the car.”
“Okay, I’ll sit in the back.”
The cold air stayed outside. Shu Qingyou put her hands on the steering wheel, checked surrounding cars, while Lin Xu was already showing Shu Rong small snacks.
“No nuts, right?”
“Huh? Nuts.” Lin Xu thought for a moment. “No, no. If Sister Shu wants some, I’ll go buy them now.”
Shu Qingyou didn’t ask more. The car started smoothly. She heard rustling from the back as Lin Xu opened a bag, her clear voice natural.
“You eat this, I eat this, and we’re good friends.”
She put a small white chocolate in Shu Rong’s hand. Shu Rong licked it, found it sweet, liked it, and decided Big Sister wasn’t bad.
“Hehe, told you.”
Lin Xu poked Shu Rong’s cheek, felt nice, thought of her own skin, bit the chocolate with nut bits, and found it pretty good.
Itchy, Lin Xu scratched her face twice, leaned close to Shu Rong.
“Rongrong, why don’t you talk yet? So weird.”
Not wanting to talk, Shu Rong kept licking the chocolate. Big Sister was a bit annoying.
“I heard someone say kids your age can get autism easily. Rongrong, you’re not sick, are you?”
Lin Xu acted shocked, but even kids don’t like being slandered. Shu Rong puffed her cheeks, turned, got startled, opened her mouth, let go, and the chocolate fell on the floor.
“So careless. I have more. Here, I’ll break it for you.”
She reached for a tissue to pick up the fallen one and throw it away.
“Sister Shu, are there tissues in the armrest?”
Hearing Shu Rong’s strange whimper, her face itched more, and her tone got heavier.
“What’s the rush? I’ll give it to you.”
Shu Rong quickly shrank her little head. Shu Qingyou glanced in the rearview mirror, her brows suddenly tight.
“Don’t give her that! You can’t eat it either!”
She slammed the gas pedal.
Her voice echoed in the car, making Lin Xu’s back stiffen. She didn’t know Shu Qingyou could panic like that.
“I… what did I do?”
What did she do wrong? Lin Xu scratched her face hard. So itchy!
“Stop it, you’re allergic. Rearview mirror.”
Her fault. She forgot Lin Xu was like an idiot now, didn’t remind her about her nut allergy. Shu Rong had the same allergy.
Oh no, was that her face in the mirror? Covered in red spots like hives, shocking.
Hugging her arms, trembling, she felt a rock pressing her head, buzzing and aching. As the car bumped over a speed bump, she wailed and cried.
“Sister Shu, I’m dying! Drive faster, hurry!”
Shu Rong couldn’t process such big information. What was dying? Definitely not good.
How didn’t she see before how much Lin Xu valued her life, despite smoking and drinking?
Shu Qingyou felt annoyed, watching the road while comforting Lin Xu.
“You won’t die.”
“Really?”
Lin Xu hiccuped from crying, wanting to confirm. Sister Shu seemed reliable, wouldn’t lie.
Maybe affected, Shu Rong hiccuped too.
Not daring to face Shu Rong, Lin Xu slid to the car’s corner.
Shu Qingyou had no choice, explained, “Do you have trouble breathing or swallowing?”
Carefully breathing a few times, swallowing, she confirmed.
“No.”
“Then you can handle it.”
Lin Xu calmed down, realized Shu Qingyou was worried for her. Not only was she unafraid, but she was a bit happy.
If she stayed allergic, would Shu Qingyou always care?
She zoned out, the itch on her face eased.
Suddenly, cold air poured into her collar, stinging her teary eyes.
She rubbed her eyes, tears came naturally.
Shu Qingyou opened the car door, reached out a hand.
“Got strength? I’ll help you.”
“Yes.”
Then Lin Xu changed her tone, grabbed Shu Qingyou tightly, whispered softly, “No, no, I’m exhausted. Sister Shu, I’m scared, my legs are weak.”
Too obvious, the red spots had faded a bit, but a hospital trip was safer.
A faint bath soap scent hit her nose. Shu Qingyou’s shoulder bore an unfamiliar weight.
Strands of hair brushed her cheek, causing a damp feeling in her lower abdomen.
She frowned, pushed Lin Xu slightly away.
“Stand up, no playing pitiful.”
Lin Xu reluctantly left the warm embrace, wanting to stay on Sister Shu.
But she was so cold. Did she need a worse allergy to get a bit of sympathy?
She pouted.
“Fine… so stingy, leaning on you won’t take a piece of flesh.”
Shu Qingyou put a child’s mask on Shu Rong, used her sister’s name to register Lin Xu at the counter.
“When they call this name, got it?”
She led her to the dermatology floor.
“I’m not dumb, I can read. Shu Wanning, right?”
Lin Xu rolled her eyes, worried about boredom, pulled out her new phone to start it, but had no SIM card. She fidgeted on the metal bench.
“Sister Shu, can you share a hotspot?”
At the hospital and still thinking of playing, Shu Qingyou gave in, quickly tapped the settings, and fixed it.
Lin Xu cheered softly, “Yes, connected. I can surf now.”
Ignoring Lin Xu’s excitement, Shu Rong disliked the hospital’s disinfectant smell, even with a mask, and buried herself in Shu Qingyou’s chest.
Lin Xu turned, envying badly. Sister Shu was so well-developed, compared to her small buns, making her a bit jealous.
Being a kid was great…
At the nurse’s station, a Beta doctor in a white coat talked to a nurse, turned toward the elevator, saw someone familiar, and changed direction.
“This is so cool, look, this cat does a backflip. Rongrong, look.”
Lin Xu tugged Shu Rong’s clothes to lift her head. Shu Rong opened her eyes, saw a tabby cat walking on the street, suddenly doing a backflip.
Two heads huddled together, happily watching cute pet videos. Shu Qingyou admitted their tastes were oddly similar.
“Shu Qingyou?”
A strange voice came. Shu Qingyou looked up. The doctor wasn’t sure, but seeing her face, it was her. The doctor was thrilled.
“It’s me, Xu Wenjing. We took the same class. I took ceramics as an elective, visited your studio years ago.”
Shu Qingyou smiled patiently, honestly, she didn’t remember the name.
“Yeah, long time no see.”
“You really remember me! I’m so touched.”
The former A University beauty, Xu Wenjing looked closely. Compared to her youthful charm, she was now like a juicy fruit, impossible not to admire.
“Sister Shu~ Why’s it not my turn yet? I want to go home.”
Lin Xu lost interest in her phone, pouted, hugged Shu Qingyou’s arm, and whined.
She glanced provocatively at Xu Wenjing, getting bolder.
“Make me good food when we get home, Sister Shu.” She shook Shu Rong’s finger.
“Rongrong wants it too, right?”
Shu Rong just nodded mechanically.
Lin Xu was annoyed. Showing her closeness to Shu Qingyou, this Doctor Xu should get the hint.
Get lost!
Shu Qingyou said, “See the doctor first.”
Her face still red, Xu Wenjing sensed her hostility, asked, “Her face okay?”
“Allergy, no big deal.”
Xu Wenjing nodded, here to help a friend skip the line, couldn’t ignore the child Shu Qingyou held, or the female Alpha’s possessive attitude.
“Is this your kid, Qingyou?”
What! Calling her Qingyou? Lin Xu’s brows furrowed like hills, ready to erupt like a volcano.
She hadn’t even called her Qingyou!
Shu Qingyou didn’t like casual acquaintances using that name, but nodded politely.
“Yeah.”
“Is she your wife?”
“No.”
True, but Lin Xu felt irritated. Not a wife, so you can flirt freely?
The broadcast called Shu Wanning’s name. Seeing Lin Xu unmoved, Shu Qingyou reminded her, “Go.”
“No, no, come with me, Sister Shu~”
Her sticky tone stirred something in Shu Qingyou. Though unsure of Lin Xu’s intent, she agreed.
As she stood, Xu Wenjing stopped her.
“Qingyou, add me on WeChat.”
