Chapter 18: Is This the Rhythm of Kicking Her Out?
Sparrows on the branches startled, flapping and chirping as they flew into the sky.
Shu Qingyou stayed still, motionless for a long while, as if the scene froze in that moment.
Lin Xu sneezed again, thinking maybe the wind hid her voice and Shu Qingyou didn’t hear.
Last night, she slept soundly, vaguely recalling hugging Shu Qingyou in a haze.
Soft, fragrant, like a freshly baked cake, especially delicious.
If she could have such dreams every night, she’d be fine going hungry.
Her stomach betrayed her, grumbling loudly. Lin Xu’s face twisted briefly, and she groaned, craving food.
The reality hit fast. She didn’t know if Shu Qingyou prepared breakfast for her. She put on a coat and rushed to the living room without thinking.
Shu Rong sat obediently on a blanket, slowly scooping egg custard with a spoon. Her mom said eating while watching TV could choke her, so she focused on finishing her food.
The dining table was empty, spotless, with no trace of breakfast.
“Rongrong, did I sleep too late? Did your mom not leave me any food?”
It wasn’t too late. The wall clock showed a quarter past seven. Shu Rong used her special bowl to keep things clean and because she loved her own things.
So when Lin Xu tapped the table twice, Shu Rong had to talk to the annoying sister.
“Can you finish it?”
Lin Xu’s eyes fixed on the glossy layer of sesame oil on the egg custard, warm and jiggly, matching the color of Shu Rong’s corduroy yellow pullover.
Her cute look was like a docile little bunny.
Shu Rong lifted her chin, noticing a strange glint in Lin Xu’s eyes she couldn’t understand. A sense of danger gathered in her small heart.
If she couldn’t finish, her mom wouldn’t have served it in her bowl.
To prevent trouble, Shu Rong spread her arms around her food, shaking her head firmly.
Lin Xu lowered her brows, speaking seriously to Shu Rong. “So young and protective of food. You’ll grow up unwanted.”
At least Shu Qingyou was generous, Lin Xu consoled herself, ignoring that Shu Rong’s tears were about to spill from her words.
The phrase “unwanted” stung Shu Rong. Tears fell into her bowl, mixing with the egg custard soup, unchanged in color, but she couldn’t eat anymore.
“What’s wrong? What’s wrong?”
Lin Xu was startled, her pupils widening slightly. She hurriedly grabbed a tissue from the box, clumsily wiping Shu Rong’s tears.
“I was teasing you. I shouldn’t have eyed your breakfast. Sorry. Even if no one wants you, your mom will.”
But Shu Rong cried harder, tears unstoppable.
Lin Xu, flustered, didn’t know what she did wrong.
What made her want to crash into a pillar was Shu Qingyou’s return. The door creaked, and Lin Xu, guilty as a thief, turned her head.
Shu Qingyou had just smoked, carrying the cool breeze and tobacco scent, mixed with her unique sweet fragrance. When close, Lin Xu took a deep breath.
Better to crash into soft tofu, she thought, her gaze quickly flicking over Shu Qingyou’s chest. Feeling guilty, she knelt on a soft mat, not too strenuous.
Shu Qingyou glanced at the crumpled tissue on the table and her daughter’s red face, sobbing and clutching her bowl, afraid someone would steal it.
No need to say it—the culprit lowered her “guilty” head.
People could faint from anger, and small things added up. Shu Qingyou now understood the saying’s power.
Lin Xu used to strike her with arrogance and disdain, what’s called gaslighting in modern terms, though Lin Xu only occasionally manipulated her to vent.
It still trapped Shu Qingyou in long-term self-doubt, losing part of herself, her personality no longer independent.
This was a common Alpha trick—deep marking with pheromones, then crushing an Omega’s defenses with belittling and deceitful words.
Total possession.
Lin Xu’s oddity was that when she took this domineering attitude, she got caught up in it too, leading to constant cold wars.
In the end, Lin Xu resolved conflicts with s3x, and over time, Shu Qingyou neared collapse.
Shu Qingyou calmly cleaned her daughter, held and soothed her for a long time. Shu Rong finally calmed down and went to play with toys.
Shu Rong played intently, ignoring her surroundings.
Minutes later, Shu Qingyou patted the sofa, tucked her hair behind her ear, and propped her chin on her hand, resting on her thigh.
This was a signal to stop kneeling, right? Lin Xu shamelessly sat beside her, but Shu Qingyou moved to the farthest spot under her nose.
Lin Xu pursed her lips.
Her eyes instinctively went to Shu Qingyou’s red string, wrapped around her creamy jade wrist.
Lin Xu’s heart fluttered. Shu Qingyou slightly curled her lips, showing mockery, removed the red string, and tossed it onto the coffee table, where the festive red cord lay limply curled.
It wasn’t the one Lin Xu gave her. Red strings fade, let alone flesh-and-bl00d people.
Shu Qingyou hadn’t slept all night. Free from Lin Xu, her thoughts surged, past moments flashing vividly, not quite old memories.
When they first met, Lin Xu was thoughtful, making her happy.
Though it was a paid arrangement, Lin Xu acted like a couple, traveling nationwide to scenic spots together. Shu Qingyou once worried their constant time together might affect work.
Lin Xu never brushed her off, acting like a perfect Alpha girlfriend. Their fingers intertwined, rubbing soft fingertips.
They shared a kiss. Lin Xu’s kisses were delicate, barely lustful. One wasn’t enough. Their eyes met, Lin Xu’s gaze shimmering, leaning in for more.
“I like being with you. If you don’t want to go out, we can stay home, watch movies in the home theater, or play the latest console. I’ve got the controllers ready.”
Lin Xu spoke gently, lowering her stance, nuzzling Shu Qingyou’s neck, breathing on her gland.
That irresistible passion made Shu Qingyou tremble uncontrollably.
She was unlike other Alphas.
Shu Qingyou stopped fretting that Lin Xu offered a paid arrangement, not a healthy romantic relationship.
Loving Lin Xu, to be precise, Shu Qingyou fell into an emotional swamp, from shallow testing to fervent devotion.
When gaming, as a motion-sick player, Shu Qingyou watched Lin Xu show off skills, clicking hell mode.
Shu Qingyou chose hell mode in their relationship.
It took years to peel away the painful scars. She took many pills and even briefly lost the ability to work professionally due to somatic issues.
Her thoughts returned. Shu Qingyou smiled faintly, without resentment.
“Lin Xu, how do you feel?”
“I’m fine, slept well, dressed warmly, just hungry.”
Lin Xu rubbed her stomach, signaling she needed food. Facing Shu Qingyou, she forgot to choose words, only wanting to bare her heart.
Her memory hadn’t returned, like a fleeting glow, but it was enough.
“Shall we go eat later?”
Of course! Lin Xu nodded, trying hard not to get close to Shu Qingyou.
Shu Qingyou chuckled. “So obedient?”
Lin Xu nodded frantically like a pecking chick, almost wagging a tail and sticking out her tongue.
“Definitely. Sister Shu says east, I don’t dare go west.”
To Shu Qingyou, it sounded awkward. Lin Xu had made her do plenty of harmful things. Now, using amnesia, she acted freely.
Shu Qingyou brushed off her promises, not taking them to heart.
“You probably guess our relationship isn’t ordinary.”
Realizing this was unfinished, Lin Xu held her breath, unable to hide her anticipation.
“No need to spell it out. The only thing I’m sure of is that after that, our relationship hit rock bottom, to the point where seeing me made you want to hurt me.”
Lin Xu opened her mouth to protest. No matter how bad she was, she wasn’t a violent thug.
Then she thought, with no memory, she had to take Shu Qingyou’s word.
Frustrated and conflicted, she still wanted to fight back.
“That was the old me. I’m completely different now.”
“What’s different? Your looks or your deep-rooted arrogance?”
Shu Qingyou paused. “Lin Xu, are you making excuses to escape?”
Lin Xu’s heart stung, at a loss. She tried to shift the suffocating feeling, wringing her hands, unsure what Shu Qingyou wanted.
“I’m not escaping. I just… changed. Seeing my photos on your phone, I don’t even think that’s me.”
Shu Qingyou frowned slightly, shifting from propping her chin to resting her palm on her thigh.
“It’s your illusion, maybe a deep self-protection mechanism. Your reason for not going home is likely intense family disputes.”
“I asked a teacher to look into it. We’ll have answers soon.”
Lin Xu froze, wanting to deny it but having no grounds.
She grew confused, missing some key point.
“And then? My family… after you figure it out, you…”
She didn’t dare assume. Shu Qingyou looked deeply at Lin Xu, searching for a trace of impending rage.
It was quiet, only the faint sound of Shu Rong’s toys clattering, not even noisy.
As winter neared and temperatures dropped, Shu Qingyou recalled Lin Xu’s cold cruelty in kicking her out.
Truly a top-tier awful Alpha. Shu Qingyou was glad she could now face Lin Xu with a smile.
“I won’t wait until everything settles to send you back. I have no duty to take care of you, Lin Xu.”
Lin Xu’s palms sweated in panic, her nose stinging as she fought tears.
Her next move was predicted. Shu Qingyou calmly slid the tissue box toward her.
Lin Xu’s heart swelled like a pool of water. She doesn’t even want to hand me a tissue.
“Thanks.”
Lin Xu covered her mouth and nose with the tissue, her eyes pitifully red.
These past days, Shu Qingyou saw a new side of Lin Xu, but her heart stayed calm. Lin Xu’s pleading for head pats was obvious.
Shu Qingyou spoke evenly, rationally. “You don’t need to grovel. I won’t do anything to you.”
“But you just implied you’re kicking me out.”
Shu Qingyou didn’t deny or agree. She rephrased.
“Maybe think of it as a temporary stay at a hotel.”
“Hotel…”
The term stung, drawing a clear line between them. Thinking of it, Lin Xu sobbed uncontrollably.
